Meh HoF is all bullshit anyway, honestly I think it speaks volumes higher about the bands who arent indoctrinated into that function of society. They are rock n roll baby!
Until Sinclair got hold and indoctrinated them. He had them play at the Chicago riots organized by William Ayers, Weather Underground ,the Chicago 7, Tom Hayden, Black Panthers etc. I was there with the 1st Armored Div. 1/52 Inf. After the Army I immigrated to Europe got to see the 5 at the "Greatest Live Rock n Roll show" Chuck Berry and many others. Brother Wayne painted himself entirely in gold ,suit, face, hands, hair, Smith painted himself in Silver with a cape, Tynor had glitter in his hair, they were fabulous because it was just the music. Wayne was at Dingwall's in Camden Lock a few years later at I got to speak with him during rehearsal, it was all good.
It hurt to return to Detroit and find Plum St. And the Grande gone. I used to skateboard there, yes, among all the black lights, strobes and smoke. I loved it!! Boshee, Tanya and Scottie, little kids used to dance on stage. We lived around Plum St and most of us worked in some capacity for 1 or more of the head shops. Promethazine Candle works, House of Mystique, THE Skin Shop, The Wisdom Tooth Cafe. And many, many others. This was my teen years. The summer of love.❤
If I had a time machine I’d take you back with me To the heydays of the Grande And all the wonders there to see You’d see the walls ablaze with color Smell the incense in the air Hear the music, sound and fury When the English bands were there At the psychedelic ballroom As the light show wheeled about And all the people freaking freely While the jams were kicking out You were there at the Grande I remember you You had hair down past your shoulders And wore rainbow-colored shoes You were there with a chick in a mini-skirt They called her Sister Mystery One of us was blasted And it wasn’t her or me ‘Cos you spoke to me in Day-Glo words And you swore that it was true That you could hear the colors And you could see the music too Alone at night in the ballroom I heard a mournful, eerie call As though a tortured soul was sobbing Deep inside the walls Of my memories of the Grande This one disturbs me most I didn’t believe the place was haunted ‘Til I heard the Grande ghost Now the ballroom stands empty Nobody ever comes to play They took out the PA system And put the light show away If the Grande could talk What stories she would tell Of when the music roared and thundered Like fireworks from Hell Of the violence out in the parking lot And the craziness backstage When the Detroit scene exploded And the Grande was the latest rage Grande days, Grande days, I had some wild nights back in my Grande days - - - - - Pretty sure those are the lyrics, now I just need to figure out the chords...
+linclink +transientsmile Ah yes, you're correct. I just found the lyrics in my copy of Kick Out The Jams and it is indeed "freaking," not "speaking." I've now edited my comment above. Thanks!
Of all the songs sixties musicians have written about the old days this is literally the only one that's better than 'not bad I suppose'...it's jawdropping genius. No one else has come close.
I have so much respect for Rob Tyner. I mean, mc5, c'mon! Still one of the rawest, baddest bands ever to step foot on this planet. And his voice was amazing 'til the end. R.I.P
The end where he fades away while throwing up the peace sign really hits me hard. It's like your last time seeing him forever in a way. I wish I could've grown up in these times to get the chance to see the MC5 or to atleast meet Rob or the others that have passed away before when I was around. An amazing man and group all around. Beautiful.
When I first saw him, I expected to laugh at him from his horribleness. But then he played his Autoharp and rocked the shit ouf of my face. Well played Sir.
A few years ago I was watching this and my girlfriend at the time walked in, she made some kinda mean crack about his appearance, and the quality of sound, I was like whatever probably turned up the volume, watched till then end and realized she watched it as well standing in the same place where she made the joke and had tears in her eyes.
this made me fucking cry man, I love you Rob,rest in fuckin peace man, it's too bad im too young to have seen the MC5 and go to the Grande Ballroom, but they will forever live in my heart and mind
Having spent much of the end of 68 and 69 at the Grande, having Felix T cat as a tennant I could never have foreseen the demise of it all. This tugs at my heart strings, unless you were there you wouldn't know. Ended up DJing and frequenting the Marquee on Wardour st. Soho but nothing was like the Grande, saw Joplin there.
Some people are tone deaf and their music is for the eyes when it should be for the EARS. Rob Tyner was a legend! His voice was still amazing, even in his later years. Sure he wasn't as trim as in his MC5 days, but not everyone can be Dorian Gray! That's actually what the theme of his "swan song" is all about...his "Grande Days" at the ballroom and reflecting on his career. He actually still looked good in middle age. We never would see Rob Tyner get old. A voice silenced before he reached 50.
@Anderson Cooper That's why it's known as middle-aged. He really only had lived half the life he could have. The TWO surviving Beatles were older than Rob Tyner and they're still alive 30 years after Tyner's death.
For those who do not know who or what you are looking at... this man is one of Rock n Rolls greatest influences the place of which tells this haunting tale also played an INCREDIBLE role in the Rock history... bzcrouse92... you are why Hannah Montana sells Cds For those who KNOW... seeing Rob Tyners face again makes me smile... in my soul
I remember standing in the mens room at the Grande talking to Rob while he picked his hair out into the afro that he was known for. Really a nice guy but was driven by his music and left wing thinking. Also, at the beginning of the vid is Dave Dixon, who was well known from the radio station WABX who was playing all the "radical and hippie" music. Dave also played music later in his carrer at WDET, back when they weren't a corporate run station. May they both rest in peace, w/the R&R angels!
I was there. 67 to 69. Day glo paint, strobes and a skateboard! The music and the atmosphere was beyond belief. I saw so many outta sight bands!! I loved it!!
This is one of those that sends you immediately to wiki/google and attempt to fill a newly created void of unexplained missing someone you never new and who lived on the other side of the world from where I am
ROB TYNER..... what a beautiful soul of a man . This is the first time I've seen this.other than him as the frontman for the MC5 what an amazing footage.R.I.P, Rob.
OMG! This is amazing. This is the way I want to remember the great Robin Tyner. This song and performance is such a great way to say farewell to Rob. Thank you so so much for finding and posting this footage. I wont be able to stop watching this for weeks now!
Cont. Well I'm not in the best of shape at the time I'm writing this, but the emotion that comes over me when I hear this or watch Rob sing it,I swear to God the memories of my life flash in my mind.More people need to see this considering the world we live in today,God Bless Rob Tyner LEGEND!!!!
I only stumbled over the 'hidden gem' that is the MC5 about 8 years ago, but I kind of like the fact that they were never household names, even though they well-deserved to be. This performance is brill, he still has that dynamism and energy here that gave the MC5 their raw spirit - the same spirit that all the great rock bands had. I just hope he went to his early grave knowing how much he was admired, loved and respected.
Very talented. I'm glad I discovered Rob, and the MC5, a few weeks back. The post that said he was an odd looking man, could have been more correct buy saying unique...at anyrate, I caught myself feelng the same curious thought about his image and watched the 1970 performance of "Kick out the Jams" (here on youtube, the black & white taping) over and over for the last 3 weeks - unique, facinating, and talented.
I was a 17 year old girl songwriter playing a coffee house. This fella came up and said, " you're really good keep going forward" it was Rob!! Click on my head for a song or two. Lol
I'm a huge fan of the MC5, and I actually saw the "MC50" back in October '18 to commemorate their 50th anniversary (with only Wayne Kramer as the only original member in this band). It was still a special event. I accidentally stumbled across this video while I was working out today (12/16), and I was stunned. Rob Tyner was a fantastic lead singer - full of personality, viewpoints, and a great singer. However, this song, as many commentators have wrote before me, was his swan song. This song is making me emotional. Rob, I wish that we could have been sojourners together in this life. I suppose that I'll just live a life where I try to advance progressive and anti-racist ideals like you did.
I always thought he was just a singer. From the looks of this he could have been his own band all on his own. Love the MC5 clips that were saved. Fantastic looking at what was real about those days and not some pre packaged TV Marketing Salesman's commercial designed to just crank out whatever sells.
Does anyone else think that it's a crime that The MC5 is not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
Meh HoF is all bullshit anyway, honestly I think it speaks volumes higher about the bands who arent indoctrinated into that function of society. They are rock n roll baby!
Not after seeing this rubbish...
@@TheNortonio _ That's one solo song from Rob Tyner, not the MC5. The recording is actually pretty darn good.
@@DONGOE 😄😄😄
I bet you dont know how to play any instruments or sing. In fact I guarantee it@@TheNortonio
The greatest song about the seventies of all time
This is not talent -- it's genius.
It's definitely both.
At least once a week played, don’t overdo your karaoke with legend Rob Tyner
God I miss tyner
I am a Detroit native and am proud to live in a city where one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time came from.
THE MC5!!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Me too. I was there.
Everyone gets old guys. His voice was awesome to the end. Thanks for posting this.
The fortunate among us do anyway. Pity that some, like Robin Tyner, didn't have a chance to get much older. Cheers.
Not everyone
He still passed young at 46.
"Imagine a world which art is the only motivation ". Rob Tyner. Love you man.
I come back to this clip several times a year and I'm so grateful to you for keeping it posted. It's a real gift! Every time.
AGREED!! I have to watch from time to time!!
As an MC5 fan this about made me cry. RIP Robin Tyner RIP The Grande Ballroom
the Grande ballroom is still up i believe and yes rip Robin Tyner and Fred "Sonic " Smith
It hurt to return to Detroit and find Plum St. And the Grande gone. I used to skateboard there, yes, among all the black lights, strobes and smoke. I loved it!! He looks so sad reminds his past glory days.. what a talent he was .. rip rob
Sometimes the past is so bittersweet, this will never come round again. The Grande is gone, my memories will never.
If I had a time machine
I’d take you back with me
To the heydays of the Grande
And all the wonders there to see
You’d see the walls ablaze with color
Smell the incense in the air
Hear the music, sound and fury
When the English bands were there
At the psychedelic ballroom
As the light show wheeled about
And all the people freaking freely
While the jams were kicking out
You were there at the Grande
I remember you
You had hair down past your shoulders
And wore rainbow-colored shoes
You were there with a chick in a mini-skirt
They called her Sister Mystery
One of us was blasted
And it wasn’t her or me
‘Cos you spoke to me in Day-Glo words
And you swore that it was true
That you could hear the colors
And you could see the music too
Alone at night in the ballroom
I heard a mournful, eerie call
As though a tortured soul was sobbing
Deep inside the walls
Of my memories of the Grande
This one disturbs me most
I didn’t believe the place was haunted
‘Til I heard the Grande ghost
Now the ballroom stands empty
Nobody ever comes to play
They took out the PA system
And put the light show away
If the Grande could talk
What stories she would tell
Of when the music roared and thundered
Like fireworks from Hell
Of the violence out in the parking lot
And the craziness backstage
When the Detroit scene exploded
And the Grande was the latest rage
Grande days, Grande days,
I had some wild nights back in my Grande days
- - - - -
Pretty sure those are the lyrics, now I just need to figure out the chords...
+WilburTheMojoFilter I want to pretend he said "all the people freaking freely."
+WilburTheMojoFilter I do believe that it's "freaking freely" not "speaking freely", but good luck with the chords! Great stuff!
+linclink +transientsmile Ah yes, you're correct. I just found the lyrics in my copy of Kick Out The Jams and it is indeed "freaking," not "speaking." I've now edited my comment above. Thanks!

Many thanks brother. We will always remember great Robin Tyner.
Speaking as an aging person myself, it took balls for the guy to put this performance on. The song's good too. RIP
Of all the songs sixties musicians have written about the old days this is literally the only one that's better than 'not bad I suppose'...it's jawdropping genius. No one else has come close.
I've watched and listened to this at least 53 times. Awesome every time.
Robin Tyner,
From the far future we salute you!
Thunder in the night forever!
Now the ballroom stands empty, nobody ever comes to play.
They took out the PA system and put the light show away.
Anyone expect him to scream "Kick out the Jams mother fucker!" after that first note?
😂❤
I have so much respect for Rob Tyner. I mean, mc5, c'mon! Still one of the rawest, baddest bands ever to step foot on this planet. And his voice was amazing 'til the end. R.I.P
So many awesome tracks and albums from these guys. ✌🏻
Wow 17 years ago…. Long time since I found this gem.
RIP Brother Rob...
I keep coming back to this. He would never want the spirit of Detroit soul to fade. Always kick it out! 🤘 RIP

You said it best brother.
Yes sir ❤
Spot on brother!!
Sweet
My life is so much better for having seen this. Rise in Power, Rob.
RIP Rob Tyner..a truly class act
When I first saw him, I expected to laugh at him from his horribleness.
But then he played his Autoharp and rocked the shit ouf of my face.
Well played Sir.
What I thought would lead to laughter instead ended with tears!!! Such A genuinely beautiful tune!

Met him at a record show in Detroit, signed a poster of this album for me
Man I wish this whole show was available.
One of the most underrated frontman/vocalist ever. RIP Brother
I like this version so much more than the album version. And, Rob's peace sign at the end is the perfect exclamation point!

I'm back after five years to say this remains awe-inspiring.
Rob Tyner
10 years of bumpin this
Me too. Where's the movie?
I cried when Rob gave the peace ✌️ sign
What he lacks in good looks, he makes up for sheer passion and raw talent. RIP Brother
Video killed the radio star man
When this clip first started, I had no idea how epic this would become once he started singing. RIP Rob Tyner
The only thing sad here is that there wasn't at least one full album made of Tyner on the autoharp for me to enjoy. Genius. PURE GENIUS.
My thoughts the very same 😢
I probably watch this at least once a month. I love it so much. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, that's the MC5's Rob Tyner, with late WABX "Air Ace" Dave Dixon. Rest in peace, gentlemen...
