It’s like watching a band from the future performing in the past. These guys blazed a trail.
That comment deserves an epic slow hand clap! That band was special and tough to fit into any box. I found a CD of really early MC5 bootlegs from '65 and '66 and you could hear them starting to rumble. Wayne Kramer always has my vote for godfather of the hard rock guitar.
The audience look like they aren't ready for it yet. Ad.ittedly I wasn't ready for punk when it hit even though we all needed it so badly.
I am there at the front of the stage on the far left of the screen! My brother Charlie is there too at times. I was an engineering student at WSU and saw the MC5 at the Grande Ballroom and other venues 22 times. After a career at Chrysler (engineer on Jeep and Dodge and Ram truck) I retired to San Diego. Thanks Wayne Kramer for your amazing documentary about your home-grown radical innovative band that was so loved by us in the 313. Thanks to drummer Dennis Thompson and band manager John Sinclair who are still with us today, for making my youth so charged with exciting music. Thanks to the DJ's at WABX, one of the premier underground rock radio stations that I visited many times in the historic art deco David Stott Building. My sister married DJ Jack Broderick. She met him riding up the elevator with me to the 33rd floor to loan Dan Carlisle my reel-to-reel tapes of WABX for his 5th anniversary show in 1973. Grateful to have experienced this progressive era including 1968 which was as tumultuous as 2020.

MC5’s Wayne Kramer Dies at 75
Kramer co-founded the iconic Detroit proto-punk outfit in 1963
And this morning, Friday, May 10, 2024, just heard that MC5 drummer Dennis Thompson has passed away. This is a sad time period where we are losing music legends left and right. In the past week Steve Albini, lead vocalist of the terrific 80s band Big Black and later Shellac, and the producer of great LPs by the likes of Nirvana, Pixies, PJ Harvey, Page and Plant, and the Jesus Lizard left us at 61, the victim of an untimely heart attack. And Gary Floyd, legendary lead vocalist for the Texas punk/hardcore band The Dicks, also passed this week at 71....
Rest in peace, Dennis, Wayne, and Brother John Sinclair. You're Kicking Out the Jams in Eternity.

Thunders never did leads and moves...totally different. he kept the solos short, and the entire band is on fire here. i used to be a bit of an MC5 wasnt a punk precursor...until i saw this. i know they werent intending that...just punk bands grew up to stale overblown wankers and kept away from the band. punk shows, you drink with the bands after the show at the bar. I dont think the Stooges were this nuts live...just Iggy. Everyone is just living this. id kill to see more songs, ill settle for three and this is the best of the bunch. The single version, Back in the USA version all different. A top 5 MC5 song. Period. This performance is--if you got something better, ill watch...
@@RokyEricson he played on Thunders record. So did Phil Lynot...Lydon liked him and Free (paul rodgers)...admittedly in the 70s. Both were active on So Alone...Thunders masterpiece. Ive never seen a video that can top this. Husker Du doing the Byrds in Philly 83 is a close second for a live band hitting that moment when you know you cant get any better than what youre doing at the moment.

I agree. This goes way beyond "Kick out the jams". If the amps were pushed to the max, this would make Led Zep, Sabbath, and all from that era sound flat pedestrian by comparison.

I saw the MC5 when I was 13 in Newport News Virginia. My father credit them with "changing" me forever. Dad was correct. Their music, politics, and energy inspired me.... and they still do. The power of music cannot be overstated.
It used to bug me that the MC5 wasn't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
But then I remembered that no christian church has ever asked God to join.

The best use of two chords I've ever seen.
There are 4 other guys. The solos are wild and not too long or overblown. The rhythm section is overlooked, but keeping it from exploding or falling apart.

My folks grew up in Detroit, my father was a college DJ who played the MC5 constantly on his radio show. He's actually in the crowd shot on the "Kick Out the Jams" album cover. Its a crime that the MC5 are not in the Rock and Roll HOF. A crime. How does a band who influenced the Ramones, White Stripes, The Strokes, Punk Rock and almost every 90s band from Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam not be inducted?

That's the way audiences were in those days ,you could see an amazing performance by a band and people would just look and maybe a bit of applause that's the way it was ,at least we didn't block up the view with cell phones and flags like at the big festivals now

Kramer had the moves! But Brown's band was as tight as a Swiss clock! Way more funk with James Brown! Not heavy as MC5. But way ahead of their time! Both! Timeless magical music! from the future! Or aliens like Parliamentary/Funkadelic(Bootsy Collins, George Clinton, and all their great players over the years!

1970, a period when every band was prone to have a ''wild one'' in their ranks - not FIVE of them. Incredibly soulful performances, yet fully competent and professional, with maximum respect for the audience. Half a century on, it's all there. Kramer's detail at 3.40.
Not sure about video, but there are some awesome photos of their performance at the Chicago riots.

OMG, those Marshalls, and the PA behind the band (as was the custom in the late 60s/early 70s). Makes my ears hurt just thinking about it. And totally worth it.

I don’t know what high energy snack these guys were on, but at 3:40 Wayne Kramer did a guitar swing the likes of which I’ve never seen before or since. This band truly smoked the music!
At the festival that they played in England at one point in the show they used their guitars as machine guns and pointed them at the two village bobbys that were standing at the front of the stage it was an incredible moment in context of all the hippy shit that was current
