@@tgiacin435 Yeah. The little brother was prob a teenager when he donated it and prob knew this toy was ass Yes I realize this reply was posted 2 years ago
The car mode actually speaks to me as a car guy. This might look utilitarian, but in reality, there are some sedans out there that are super sporty, the most notable ones being the Subaru Imprezas and Mitsubishi Lancers. In this case, I’d say the front end is based on a Nissan Skyline, and it does actually look somewhat sporty for a car.
What I find funny about this is, even the writers for the anime knew this toy was garbage. The second he showed up, every character, Autobot and human alike, talked about how sh**ty and weak he was. He was useless and dim the entire show, and nobody wanted him around, which was hilarious!
well I mean if you think of it as there's supposed to be robots in Disguise then picking your average typical everyday vehicle would be the perfect disguise so nobody would expect your average run-of-the-mill car to be a robot so when you think about it like that it makes sense
I know Depth Charge was a good figure! I've got two of them. The toys in there weren't Addict material or anything, just demonstrations of toys with overly intrusive gimmicks and if you ever had to put Depth Charge in a crowded display shelf you'd know what I meant about his gimmick.
Thing is, though, that TJ is against gimmicks that sacrifice articulation. Launchers, in particular, are huge articulation limiters if made a full part of the figure; so putting a launcher in the torso sacrifices possible torso articulation. That's why he has such a immense hatred of Armada Hot Shot's toy; the gimmick devoured him like Hot Shot devours JaAm; meaning totally and swiftly. Supreme Cheetor also got heat for that, especially for the arms/beast mode front legs, which wasn't helped by that figure's horrendous joint issues and unnecessarily gimmick-laden upper body. Depth Charge's chest-disk launcher gimmick may be cool, but it hinders torso articulation; again, something TJ isn't fond of in toys.
If I saw a blue sedan with THREE autobot symbols on the front, TransFormers on the top of the windshield, unfitting yellow tinted windows, ENORMOUS taillights and A HUGE ROBOT HEAD LOOKING THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD I would know who I was dealing with...
Wrong. The flip-up rear section of the vehicle means the legs have to be solid to fit those parts, the spring chest means the torso has to be a big block, and the spring arms have to be bulky to fit the mechanics of the gimmick. You can't mentally removing the gimmicked parts and replacing them with the same parts but without gimmicks, you could do that to any toy and it comes out the same, so you can't say it's not a Gimmickformer because it was designed around three big gimmicks.
The worse thing about this toy is that it broke itself. Due to a combination of that power punch gimmick being on a hair trigger and because his gun is translucent plastic it didn't hold up over time and eventually because the punch kept going off the gun eventually shattered.
his Alt mode is based on an R32 Skyline GTS-T 4door its very popular with tuners in japan so it is cool for some. But yeah the rest of your review is spot on
Studio Series Rise of the Beasts Wheeljack has the same issue with his head being visible in vehicle mode as Armada Sideswipe. It looks like he drives himself.
Actually cars with larger spoilers are able to go faster thanks to the downforce it causes, keeps them stable and from the higher speed lifting them off the pavement, so for him it's a very intelligent gimmick.
Let me just say one thing about Sideswipe--specifically, about his altmode. At least one other commentor has mentioned it already, but I want to clarify things a bit more: Sideswipe's not just a four-door sedan. He's a Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R, widely considered one of the greatest performance cars ever built--and yes, they came in both 2-door and 4-door varieties. The nice thing about his choice in altmode is that not only is it fast, but only a total car geek would give it a second glance.
Anyone notice how he's kinda what inspired the SG Treadshot? Yellow Windows, silver bumper, blue, yellow? You CANNOT say this is totally not an inspiration for that guy.
The Runamuck redo from the Cybertron line fits this mold a bit better I think. It suffers from most of the same issues as sideswipe, minus the arm thing in car mode that got worse due to the key system, but I think it’s a bit better. It stands better and doesn’t have all the minicon gimmicks
This is my question for you, TJOmega: If I were in charge of storywriting for Transformers fiction, would this guy be a perfect generic that could be shown dead?
I lost the Nightbeat minicon that came with him about 2 days after I bought this when it first came out. I found Nightbeat 2 weeks later in a Fruity Pebbles box. If i realized that the cereal was stale before i found the minicon, he would have been thrown away. I still don't know if that is good or bad...
Try putting him in a display shelf sometime, if his wingspan doesn't kill your display options the handle and trigger sticking out of his back will do it. Having to deal with two of them I know it all too well.
Hey TJ, a short anecdote: I was a young boy (maybe 6) and I wanted a toy from that cartoon I loved sooo much. My ftaher got to travel to the US (great oportunity since I live in Argentina). I loved this cartoon sooo much, I couldn't stop inventing robots and drawing a certain red and blue truck. My father returned and gave me this box. It had a Logo that made me sooooooo happy and anxious. The box was of decent size. I was filled with the expectations of a 6 years old and then.....RIPPERSNAPPER
I should have said it years ago, but it's thanks to your video that I went and paid the Ebay price to have mine. No regrets because he's lovingly horrible! I'll never put my Armada Sideswipe in storage and I'll keep him forever.
my friend brought that minicon on the bus 2 years ago. everyone had the same reation as you. completly unexagerated. the geek of the bus (i'm a nerd, not a geek) threw it out the window.
Now that I think about it, the legs don't make any real sacrifices that I can think of, the only bad thing I can think of for the legs is the lack of knees and heels which have nothing to do with the gimmick and the torso and arms being bulky give him a sense of being almost like a buff guy and the gun on Runamuck is in proportion and the springboard is lost and didn't really interfere so I guess if there's a sacrifice in the legs for the gimmick that I missed I guess we're both right.
good to hear that i'm not the only one that liked it, if they only remade every minicon and transformer for armada in new style... i really would like to have a new version of optimus prime
you know, I'm re-watching the entire series because that's how much I enjoy it. by the way, love the ending (my first thought: "Optimus, how could you!?!?!")
I kid you not, Hasbro is soon releasing a figure WORSE than Armada Sideswipe. One step changer flip n change I don't know which terrible line, Drift. The figure is LITERALLY A GIMMICK. It has giant hollow non moving pieces of cheap plastic for legs, and sticks for arms, topped off with horrible paint.
Except it's a line for little kids and the purpose isn't to represent the character. They dont qualify for Plastic Addict the same way McDonalds toys or things like Stealth Force or RPMs dont qualify; they're not made to be real Transformers.
Yep you mean ranamuck? I have him! He's actually better than Armada Sideswipe! Great flaming decals and light piping head! The head looks badass! FUCK armada Sideswipe, get Ranamuck! If you want a better sideswipe,It's better to get ROTF sideswipe!
@Timinator6069 Hasbro creates the initial concept and design, Takara figures out the engineering, it's a joint-production that they're both involved in, and a lot of Armada figures are directly credited to American designers, Aaron Archer who's a VP for Hasbro today was behind Hot Shot and Laserbeak that I've reviewed before .
okay. judging from the amount of tranformers back there you look like you have alot. so i would like to take this time to ask a question. do you have runamuck, who looks surpriseingly like sideswipe, from cybertron?
It was going to be a review-off. He would review Armada Optimus while Optimus would be reviewing him in a negative light. Or something to that effect. Not to worry though. While the original plan has been cancelled, Armada Prime is going to get the Addict treatment...eventually.
That’s an R32 Skyline bro.. twin turbo straight 6 with awd, aka the blue Calsonic car from Gran Turismo it’s anything but “utilitarian and boring” these things came out in 92 and shot flames out the exhausts
On mine the Minicon stays in just fine but thoughs weapons he has don't fit right in his hands or in their vehicle mode storeage. Red Alert had some extra parts stored away on him as well and they'd just allways fall out durring transformation and there's no way to get them stored after the doors are shut.
Don’t mind me, just going down memory lane. It occurred to me that the vehicle being so basic and pedestrian could have worked for the whole “Robots in Disguise” thing. What better way to blend in than by turning into such a normal vehicle? And it could’ve paired well with the Flip-Out motorcycle gimmick. Like something out of MASK. Normal vehicle then suddenly BLAM motorcycle! But of course that whole idea was ruined by Sideswipe making absolutely sure that you KNOW he’s a Transformer.
I can just imagine that little boy who donated sideswipe and was so excited and just to see TJ swear like it was his job. LOL
Depends on how old that little brother is now. This is an armada toy after all.

Awesome Job TJ! You make Armada toys fun! Keep up the amazing reviews!
The best part about this episode and its flow to the next? He actually DOES replace the intro.
I can't believe this was remolded and repainted on three more separate occasions, and into the cybertron line no less.
Good old Treadbolt, ay?

Your explanation would make sense IF he hadn’t stamped “TRANSFORMERS” on every available panel he had.
Old school GT-R's look like everyday vehicles but run like exotics

I like that he is a sedan, we need more generic car transformers; otherwise what is the point of a disguise if you are a cool and pricey sports car.
Anyone notice how he's kinda what inspired the SG Treadshot? Yellow Windows, silver bumper, blue, yellow? You CANNOT say this is totally not an inspiration for that guy.
