When I was a kid auctions were a big thing in the south. We went every Friday night. They sold any and everything you could think of. Clothes, nick nacks, cars, home decor...you name it, it was there. My nanny ran the concession stand in the back and sold peach cobbler with homemade ice cream, and hamburgers. 😁
In the late 90’s I worked at a country bar that had line dancing and couples dance contests. It was great!! The dancers would wear those special undergarments like cheerleaders wear under their skirts so they could fling their skirts around during the dance. We even had some acts come in and perform live and we would be absolutely packed. This was a big thing back then 🙌🏼😄
My parents and three brothers all went to auctioneers school in Kansas. My parents owned Willowvale Antiques and Auctions in Biloxi, MS. My dad was so funny. It was like standup comedy. He would put up a cut glass bowl up and if the bid started to low, he would throw it in a bucket with a brick in it and say I would rather break it all than sell it that cheap. My sibs and I were warned ahead of time not to say a word or make any kind of gesture that the auctioneer might mistake for a sale. It was amusing hearing him prattle.
I grew up on a farm and have been to a few auctions. Usually the day would be themed behind a certain industry or hobby. People who had something to sell would bring it in, get assigned a ticket number, and the auction company would take a cut of the money you get for whatever you're selling. The pens in the back would be filled with the relevant animals and the'd also have a section for any possibly desired equipment. A horse auction would of course have horses but then they'd probably have saddles, saddle blankets, bridles, halters, maybe some tanks for water, brushes, and all sorts of other stuff.

We were auction kids. My family would go to Thursday and Friday night "Junk" auctions. They sold anything from antiques to Tupperware to toys to cars. You never knew what people would bring to sell. Even live animals like chickens and ducks. Anyone could sell - just load up your truck with junk, be there at the beginning to register, then draw a number. Lowest number went first, second lowest next, etc. You could buy or sell or both. Then we'd go to the Flea market on Saturdays and Sundays, and sell what we bought at the auction. At the end of the Flea market, we would go around and offer $25-50 for whatever was left of other people's flea market tables (people that were just there to get rid of stuff from their homes). Then we'd go through that stuff, and take it to the auction the following Thursday to sell. It went around and around, and we kids had a blast.

I got a wooden building set which was from the forties, it is similar to sector sets. As a kid we got a drawer calf and a pregnant pig from auction. Dad got a model t car to rebuild when I mine back in late 60s. We had a blast rebuilding it.
I'm so glad you mentioned about her dancing because I remember years ago watching him in an interview and this music video came up and how the woman was a world champion clog dancer at the time so they just had to have her do a little fancy foot work.

Auctions are pretty common in agricultural areas. My daddy grew up doing farming and made sure we knew what it was to go to farm auctions.
