Make compost pile with grass cutting. The heat generated will break down seeds etc In time
Do not use the grass cuttings as mulch, you'll regret it. Even hay and straw can introduce weeds into your garden.
I agree! You could start a compost system with the grass and weeds. When it has composted sufficiently, add to your garden beds and continue to enrich them.
My brother raises a plant called Pigeon Peas to feed his chickens. He has several pickings each year.

If the back property has pines; pick up pine needles from the ground and lay around the plants. I use a small amount of a couple of inches and the mulch lasts a growing season. One can keep adding as the years go by because they degrade beautifully
Agreed! The voice of experience here...grass and hay WILL grow like crazy if just mulched on top of the soil. Composting it is the better choice. Pine needles work well if you can find some.

I was looking at the space around your house and imagining the amazing gardens you can create. Especially with some of the quartz rocks surrounding a water feature or little waterfall going into a small pond. The stone houses are going to look stunning when they're built. ahhh! Louise! I would absolutely love a pond with little frogs and some birds bathing in it! I have thought about it too! Maybe even behind the garden? I love these ideas! Please keep them coming! I also want some roses! Lots of butterflies, birds and bees all over...!
@@TheIndigoEscape yes, lots of Roses 😃 The weather in Portugal is also perfect to grow Wisteria and let it creep up a stone wall or over a pergola. Honey suckle plants and Star Jasmine..... I'll encourage you to go wild in your gardens 😆 🤣 😂

No don’t use it, you’re right just adding more weed seeds. Straw hay is what I think you’d want. You’ll have plenty of suggestions here I’m sure. Love watching you and your family. Simon is amazing!
Thank you Cathy. I have just done one bed and the rest are going to be filled with just straw. I need to go to the bottom of the land as I’m sure there are other mulch materials I can find
You can incorate bottles in a wall these provide light, perhaps try on outdoor bathroom.. checkout MY little homestead. Check if a farmer has some house manure and mix with compost 😊 you should also plant a couple of avocado 🥑

Wood chips are great for mulch with no weed seeds running your garden later.

I love your videos because you provide explanations for things that aren't obvious to us. Simon's "taking it easy" is everyone else's hard work. Simon has been taking his vitamins! He's fast!
I spray for wasps too! I hate the little stinks! I keep finding nests every time I turn around. Good job on the screen. Now you know why American houses have screens on all their windows and doors. We have mosquitos the size of airplanes...ok, that's a slight exaggeration...maybe.
If you wash then cut the tops off those green wine bottles, you could lay them on their sides in the cement in a wall to let light into a room. Its a beautiful effect, like stained glass.
Grow some sweet corn for your own meals too. I love roasted corn.
Bottle bricks, like at Cindy Vine's cottage. I think Luke & Sarah replicated sea glass by tossing pieces of glass with a bunch of gravel in their cement mixer, so genius. Great, smooth glass bits to embed into mozaics, etc, yes?
He is doing a great job. A hack for the less skilled is to use a plank to face up to and then you use a mortar gun to pipe in the cracks for pointing. It won't look as great but it is an effective uniform finish for the unskilled mature mason.
Use the grass clippings for compost. Sift through it and remove anything that has the potential to grow and turn it into your own soil. Putting that in your garden will be a nightmare.

Use wood mulch or at least make a compost system so you can use the hay as a compost component instead of mulch because it has way too many seeds. If you start composting you can improve the quality of the soil given you a better chance at success because your soil looks so compacted and adding compost over the years will give you rich fertile soil but it takes a while and you really have to work on the right compost elements of browns like wood cardboard etc and greens like grass and kitchen scraps. Do your research and you'll be amazed at the things you can compost like sawdust which is great when you are building 😊
My first reaction was to say beware of the seeds from the grass, but then it occurred to me that the grass seeds have already been blowing onto your planting beds when the wind blows if the grass has gone to seed. Also, the immature grass seeds won't grow. If you pick out the strands that have mature seeds or if you shake the seeds out, then the grass seed problem is solved.

I’d be careful of using grass for mulch due to the seeds. Put a layer of cardboard down under the grass if you want to give it a try.
I know the gas strimmer can work for hours but it can overheat also. I prefer my battery operated strimmer. No pulling. No gas fumes and I can turn it off as often as I want and easily restart. But I can only work for an hour each day ……..which suites me just fine. 😊

Loved your video and your place is going to be beautiful as well as practical. Simon is a fantastic builder, and with all of you working so hard, it is progressing very quickly. Seeing you & your Mother working together brings back precious memories of my Mother & I doing things together, she passed 10 years ago at almost 92 but I still miss her, although the last 4 years of her life she lived with us & I am so thankful that my husband & I were able to care for her. Enjoy your family & cherish every moment. Wishing you a blessed week, and the water fall was gorgeous. Sister time is precious too.

I bet your mum loved having your company, your help and support, specially during her last years. Its such an important time for them to be with company and not feel alone... She must be so proud of you.
Im very lucky to have my mum around and I love she doesn't feel lonely. She also has my sister here as well. Im glad she is here and not in England or further, in Venezuela. Some of my friends are experiencing that and its so sad.

Thank you for your comment. As in fly screens? umm Im not sure thats something thats done here as an automatic add-on for windows.
The windows aren't brand new as well. They were bought second hand online :)
@@TheIndigoEscape Yes, in the U.S. windows come with screens that are removable. I thought that the windows were new, they look so good. I guess that screens are not standard in all countries. I do love how much work you have done to the property. Having your mother there must be a blessing, she seems like she's a lovely and supporting mom. Best of luck!! 😃

Long time ago I made a lamp with a very tall, blue bottle of wine. I was lucky because I had the same bottle in three sizes. It ended up being.my favorite lamp.

I would buy clean mulch where you did not get the weeds also.
Your garden is looking so beautiful! You might want to consider using the cut grass/weeds etc for creating compost first. The heat will kill the seeds then you can use it on paths etc. Straw is better than hay for use as mulch though it can also have seeds and pesticides used to grow it. Its crazy I know. Thanks for sharing your life with us! I so enjoy your videos.
Another wonderful video! Thank you! Im thinking you do NOT want to put the freshly mowed grass right onto your garden! You will probably regret that for awhile! But if you rake it up and put it into a composting bin or pile for a while so that the decomposing can prevent the seeds from being able to germinate, then it would be much better!

A lot of people use water-soaked cardboard for mulch between plants. Using
special fabric that reduces weed growth with sand or smooth gravel on top, between garden beds will save you much labor later
I can't start those gas streamers, that's why I bought a battery powered one,but I have a small yard.

I would take up the grass and compost it. Dry grass does not make good mulch sadly
Deep mulch kind of cancels out the seeds it contains. If it is kept thick enough, nothing can germinate up through it. I think that is what we refer to as the Ruth Stout Mulching method here where I live. We used to use a layer of old newspaper and then pile a ton of mulch over it and never had problems with weeds.

Rake up the grass and put it in a pile to rot and turn into compost..seeds will grow and drive you nuts if you use it as mulch..
I use carton as a mulch make it wet and then tore it in small peaces and ley it around your veggies over time it will disappear and you have to do it again works really well 😉

The strimmed grass can be raked up and put on the compost pile. Hot compost will kill the seeds. Then you can put the compost on your garden.
I would not put grass clippings on my garden. They are just seed weeds waiting to sprout.
oh dear! We actually did this... We used the ones that were lay on the ground for a few days... I think im going to make another compost bin and do exactly this very soon

Using grass as mulch will get grass growing where you don’t want it! It’s much better to compost it first and, it breaks down so quickly.

I loved the entire video! Do not use grass! You really don't have to use anything. It just saves on water evaporation. Think back and even now. Do you think farmers mulch acres of corn? No. Don't worry about it. I don't mulch here bc it's treated bark, not unless I use my pine straw, which I have a huge pile. In the fall I pile them up against the base of the trees to keep the stickers and jack grass from growing. I like hearing your brother-in-laws accent. Where is he from? Ha, when you asked your Mom's name, that's the only complete sentence I can say in Spanish from taking it in University! LOL!! I picked up on it before she answered! And yes, she has a very pretty name. Linda in Portuguese means Beautiful. So really you can leave off the ME, and call me LINDA=BEAUTIFUL! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 You must be named after your Mum? I think Im going to get my ears pulled on the next video by the comments because we have indeed used the grass that was cut but! It was cut a long time ago... so maybe we are out of the woods. Lets see. I am now going to just use the straw. Last year it did help a lot not use so much water. My irrigation still leaks and Im a bit frustrated with it but Im going to have to fix it next year. We are worried we are going to get some scorching days in the summer.

The reason we say no for the grass is bc of all the weeds from the seeds that will grow. I don't know if you watch Luke and Sarah, I've been watching them a long time. They live somewhere close to Castelo Branco. They have a green netting over part of there garden to help keep the sun from scorching part of their garden. They bought an old Cheese farm with a Ruin. But built a caravan home and added to it to live in while they get established and have their chickens and dog and cat and pigs. Their from Malta and they traveled around the US and other places before they settled in Portugal. Ok. My point is, they have that green netting. I'm sure you can contact them and they can tell you where they got it from! Love to All! XXXXX

We.found using black.mossy netting is better.it.sort of disappears
Set up composting bays with pallets. A layer of grass clippings, a layer of cardboard, repeat until compost shrinks by half. Turn over into another compost bay refill bay one. Cardboard adds carbon to the compost which grass is short of. Grass clipping alone will turn into a steaming hot, slimey pile. If you have chickens, put some of the green clipping into the pen for the chickens to eat and scratch in. when they have finished with it, rake up what's left and add to the compost bays. Cheap fertilizer and tasty yellow egg yolks.

We don't! We find that the wheels may not be good enough for the ground. There are lots of brambles as well
Why not a black mosquito netting? You can see much better...
The back was black and I thought I could just turn it around but the white is a UV protector. It was just what they had available
Please do not put grass bits in your garden--you will regret it for years. Hay is marginally better, but it also has weed seeds in it. Maybe turn over the yard waste into the compost pile and turn regularly. But not dried on the ground--you will regret adding to your garden that way.
Oh no! I already did it to two beds :(!!! Im going to then remove it and use just straw. There is a woodyard near use that has pine bark. How about that? The are a bit big though and I have heard it attracts ticks!
