This is excellent advice coming from one of the icons of the vlogging community. You... have made your channel what it is, one of the best, right up there with Dixie! Speaking for myself, and I feel others will agree, we watch you because of your personality blending with what you are doing that we cannot be out doing at the time. Your personality, wit, self-confidence and your beautiful German/Southern accent makes your channel unique. Happy New Year Road Runner, best to you in the new year!
If I'm tired and wanting to get to the next shelter, I'll start playing "Across Land and Sea" from captain jacks' channel and I know the shelter will appear before the song is over!
Happy new year,Roadrunner! This was just an excellent video, and, having watched so many hiking videos since the pandemic, I agree with everything you said. Particularly, as a musician, I just hate music on there. It’s such an individual taste that it’s bound to destroy the experience for someone if it’s country music for instance and that person loves jazz or classical or whatever. The other thing I was so happy to hear you mention was “keep the intro short.” My goodness - several people I followed had these 30 second intros every single video and honestly, I just couldn’t hang. God bless you on your next journey. I will be praying for your health and safety! Paulie
Great video! So many good points! Thank you, friend. 💙 Monetizing has really helped us in all of our adventures, including the AT. I agree with you on the music, too. I love it and also don’t like it for the reasons you stated. Most of the music I use is from my son, so it’s extra special to me. It’s another part of the keepsake factor for us.💙 For what it’s worth, two things I’ll add: Just do your best and try to stay authentic to yourself. You’ll get 50% of people wanting one thing, then another 50% saying it’s the worse thing in the world. I’ve learned I can’t please everyone, even though I’d love for everyone to be happy. 😊 Second, if you don’t have thick skin, it’s time to develop it because some people can be down right mean. The hurtful comments sting a bit, but just like in real like, that’s a reflection of them, not you. It’s as if some people who comment hurtful things forget that you’re a real person and that your friends and family have to read those comments, too. Thanks again for the video. You’ve been a constant source of learning and inspiration to us and we just love you!
IMO, no to intros! No to constant sniffling, no to “selfy scenic shots, no to looking at self instead of camera lens, and “sing-songy” voice. You do such a good job and I feel like you’re talking directly to me as a friend.
You nailed it! The intros for some are so long, I just fast forward, but I agree with you. I'm not a fan of the music, some keep it too loud, so you can hear what their saying, and I like seeing the hiker and alternate with the trail and views. You do an amazing job of vlogging and keeping the videos interesting. Did you see BossBabe and her husband are doing the Eastern Continental trail? That will be fun. Hope you holiday's were fun. Thanks for the update
Morning, Juliane. Happy New Year. Great video. Nice tips about vlogging. Loved your don'ts. Can't wait for your start on the AT.. Take care. Stay safe. See you next time.
Happy New Year to you. I've been following you since you started your TH-cam channel and still loving your videos. Can't wait for your journey on the A.T. again. Happy trails
Great video. As an avid older backpacker and you tube backpacking viewer, not vlogger, I appreciate real, I appreciate no or little music, I HATE the whatever it is, rave or what music? That high pitched beat music? Bleech. I appreciate showing all of the journey and not just the scenery and the ups, all meaning town food/days, fatigue and down days, not making it on the one last river rock hop…makes it real. Most of us who watch thru hiker vlogs are hikers, backpackers, wanna be thru hikers or past our prime to do any of that. When someone shows some fantasy version I get turned off. No. At least give me the out takes, because you and I know it wasn’t THAT magical.
A great video. One thing that is helpful to us section hikers, when you cross roads or parking areas, giving us a peek. I know thru hikers do not need that, but a help to us. Thanks! We hope to meet you on one of our section hikes!
That's an excellent one. I hate when hikers are on the trail and talking about getting close to town. Then BAM, the next clip is them inside a hotel room. It so jarring and it leaves a big hole in the story. How did they get from the trail to the hotel? I wouldn't expect them to film the entire wait at the trailhead, and every minute of the ride into town. But at least a quick pan around the trailhead and maybe one clip of some interaction inside the car if possible would be good. If not possible a shot of the outside of the car pulling up would suffice. It helps with story.
Excellent video. I learned several new things that I was interested in such as making money. It’s less than I thought. I’ve watched all your videos and really look forward to them. I think there is a place for the right music that fits the moment. There are so many majestic views that music could add some emotion. I think too many people are only showing happy stuff but I’d also like to hear about the tough times too. More realistic trail life. And just for the fun of it I wouldn’t film a video of someone filming themselves with a random board next to them as it’s distracting. 😊. Looking forward to more of your great content.
Happy New Year. Thanks for finding material as we all wait for trail start. I love this behind the scene reflections, how the sausage is made. In the end, it is all about personality. The vloger has to be willing to share, let us in a little. Clearly as you well know important to set personal limits. After that, one just has to have faith that if you are yourself, some people will stay. Onward!
It looks like it might rain , my neighborhood is pretty quiet , we could sleep inside or outside . Hi , Adam and you liked the comments , you know I like you too Julienne . The bees attacked again today , but I will survive , nobody else will was hurt by them .
Great tips! I totally agree with the music part. I'll mute the clip and just read the subtitles especially if they use the same audio clip over and over. I'd much rather hear the people talk or the sounds of whatever bird might happen to be in the tree, I'm stuck indoors hoping to enjoy being on the trail, if I wanted to listen to music, well there's plenty of streaming services for that.
Good information, and interesting detail about the work involved editing, Transferring to sd card, etc. l have enjoyed your “trail talks” while you Are hiking, too…very insightful :) Happy new year!
Happy and prosperous New Year to you Roadrunner. Have a great hiking season. Hope to see your videos coming up! Diamond Dave, Trail angel, Big Bear, Ca
Happy new year to my favorite hiker and vlogger. Everything you say is on point. One thing I would add is the length of the video. I generally won’t watch a vlog that’s more than 20 minutes. I’ve seen some upwards of 45-50 minutes.😱. As for the Captain that music is now forever connected to his hike. I find myself humming it…. LMAO. Have a great year. I will be watching. Happy trails.🤘🏻🥾⛰️
I love long hiking vlogs. I think 30 minutes is the sweet spot. If the video is too long it's easy to watch it on double speed, but I rarely do that. Though I have to admit that I had to stop watching one hiker who was doing 45-50 minutes and even longer vlogs, because I got too far behind on his videos, and now i will never have enough time to get caught up. I'll still watch him again in the future though.
Happy New Year Roadrunner! These are great tips! Although I don't see a thru- hike in my future, I have always thought of maybe documenting my day hikes or other points of interest in NJ so this is helpful if I ever do decide to go that route. How much is the editing software videoshop per month?
Loved the video. My pet peeve is wind noise at the summits. I hit mute or fast forward until I think they are out of the wind. My helpful tip, if it is in anyone's budget, the newe Samsung S24 Ultra seems to filter out most of the wind noise. Also.... I dislike long shots of just the camera facing forward. Some of that is good. Or use that as a backdrop as you talk. But just minutes of forward facing camera video.... nope. I try to stay under 5 seconds of a trail shot. I typically only use music when the video has no audio... like in a series of still shots. For me, I know when I am watching someone else's video and there is a 30 seconds of a series of still shots with no sound... for some reason I tend to lose focus. But maybe that is just me.
I have really enjoyed your videos and following your journey, both as a hiker and a vlogger. I appreciate this video so much and will take to heart your suggestions. I mostly make videos to help me remember the trail and the people along my journey- it can tend to blur together if not. But, I also love it when others watch and follow along and provide feedback. My flexible plans this year include at least 1/2 of the AZT and finishing the 3 PCT sections I have left that total about 485 miles. I know that making section hiking videos is not what most want to follow as it disrupts the journey. But that's what works best for me. So thanks again! Happy 2025!
Thank you for not being the type to shove your camera in someone's face. I've had to replace several phones/cameras because of people doing that to me. Unfortunately, it's a reflex for me. I HATE being on camera and just instinctively treat it like a weapon threatening me, which usually means it gets knocked out of my face and smashes on the ground. When it's done as an innocent mistake, I feel really bad about it. But when it's the type of person you were talking about, I just don't give AF and tell them off. It's like these people have no concept of "personal space" and that it can vary wildly from person to person.
Happy new year RR! About making money or getting (financial) support, you only mention two apps in your description of this video (besides becoming a Patron member) that are mainly only available in the US. I would suggest some alternatives like PayPal or the one Molly Rose (AT trail name Mojo) uses: Buy me a coffee.
I lose interest quickly if the camera is stuck on someone's face. I like showing the trail but try to keep a balance of selfie and trail to (hopefully) keep the video interesting. Great advice for us section hikers, too!
Yep, me too. Some have noted that that seems to be very common among bearded old men. They seem to be a dime a dozen on TH-cam. As an old man myself, I hate to tell them, but nobody wants to stare at an old man's face for 10 minutes while they talk about their hike but show absolutely nothing. They might get about a 100 views but thats about it.
Great tips! I would add to the list of 'don'ts', not to have a huge board next to your head in the background. It was distracting and marred the symmetry of the building behind you.
This was quite interesting. You have come a long way from when you began the AT. Did you watch “Dinner for One?” We did! Hilarious! Thanks for that recommendation!
Hello Julie-Anne ! Happy New Year ! I just watched your WHOLE video, and I am happy I did, because whenever I get to watch a WHOLE video, always means it was pretty interesting. I couldn't watch so many of your videos this year because I was so busy, but I wish I could have and there is always time to catchup. Anyway, every time I DID make it to watch one of your videos, it was always a happy and relaxing moment. I tried not to worry too much for your safety, not fearing all the time that you would get trapped in a forest fire, or could suffer from altitude sickness, or slide down uncontrolled down an icy steep mountainside, or have a too close encounter with a dangerous grizzly bear. I feel sorry that you actually had to ''skip'' a few stretches on your pct thru because of those too many and menacing bad fires, but, in the end, I am nonetheless happy you DID skip those, because it was the only sensible safe way to go. Always a lot of fun to watch your natural, spontaneous, straightforward, humorous, beautiful videos, good entertainment all the way.
Had to "skip", sure -- for survival purposes, but not ground left uncovered. Completed three remaining unhiked "pieces" of trail AFTER successfully reaching N. Terminus and return to Hart's Pass. RR is an "accredited 😂" Double + Crowner every step of the way 🎉 !!!
Well said and great advice. I once said to a clogger that her music obscured her narration. She said, ‘fine, don’t watch them.’ I haven’t and I won’t. Also, I would wager that a good many of you subscribers let the ads play because it’s good for you.
This was so helpful to me! Many of your points are the reasons that I appreciate watching your videos! 🤩 I was one of those vloggers that bailed... wishing I had watched this video through some time warp back in 2019. 😃 But one day I will post again. Actually I've already learned a lot just from watching how you put your videos together, but all of these pointers listed out really helps. Thank you!!!! 😁
Happy New Year, I would add: Vloggers who overshare personal business/are needy, Ones who are phoney, Ones who are well-known and thirst for free shit (Magic) Ones who think they can have their dog everywhere, even where prohibited. Too much music - I tune out. I wish the Captain did not play throughout. I like the daily vids to be 8-12 mins. That's my sweet spot. I have other interests I like to watch, so 20+ mins would really have to keep my attention.
10:48 I would have to disagree that a lot of viewers do not like music. I see comments like that on many hiking videos, but I would say it's a very small, very vocal minority of viewers who want to rid all hiking videos of music. One hiking channel I watched this last year was getting hit with a lot of very rude comments demanding that they drop the music from their videos. In one of their videos they acknowledge the comments and said for that reason they were discontinuing music on their videos. The response in the comments was over 95% to bring the music back, which they did shortly after that. Good appropriate music will never hurt a hiking video. As long as you make sure it’s not too loud or something.
I´m not a big fan of music in hiking videos, but I´m also not a hater, as long as it is functional and actually adds something to the video or just covers up some very windy areas. What I really don´t like is when the music is too loud and making me to change my sound-levels to get to hear what somebody says and than to take it back down again when the music takes over. In general if I want to listing to music there are other ways do to that than watching a hiking channel.
@@ElPiedro80 Yeah I agree. For sure too loud a music is bad. That could or would likely cause many viewers to stop watching. The video makers have to be very careful with their music. The music track should be at the same level as the main audio track. Lower if they are talking over the music. I have had to ask a few people to please lower the volume of their music.
I should correct something in my original comment. I think I exaggerated when I said 95%. I just went back and looked at the comments on Justin and Anna Hit the Trail's PCT 2024 Episode 44 video. 37 comments were in favor of their music. 4 were against their music and 8 were neutral. So about 75% like the music on their videos. 8% hate the music and 16% don't care one way or the other. I still think that good music on a hiking video will help the video more then it would hurt it. Just be very careful with the music.
@@MaxZomboni Yes, good example of soft music that added something to their videos and you could still hear all the sounds of nature. I enjoyed their series until the end. I didn't comment in that particular video but you can add another one to those who liked their way of adding music.
You shouldn't assume an old man is bereft of intelligence. Cut your hair in a bob style, smile a lot more, and keep your voice ascending rather than declining or fluctuating too much up and down.
I've never published a video on TH-cam but watch some thruhiker videos each season. A couple of things that make me give up on a channel: - Don't expect perfection but poor sound quality is a killer. - Video quality actually isn't as important as sound but there are limits - Music or not isn't important for me but fading music in and out repeatedly for a couple of seconds each time is annoying.
lol as soon as you said “don’t shove your camera in peoples faces” I knew Somewhere would surface as an example. One side effect of having a channel is your viewers get to know you very well. On a side note as part of a vlogging tips video including some examples of good editing software available on phones would have been nice.
One thing I'd add is don't take long videos of your feet while you're walking. I see so many people do this. It makes me dizzy to watch and isn't very interesting besides. Just a personal peeve of mine.
Haha I guess that depends on how long the shot is. I wouldn't want to watch a 30 minute video of nothing but feet. But foot shots are kind of cool if they are not overdone. It gives the viewer chance to see what the ground and the trail looks like.
They are usually the good kind of weirdos 😀 It is like saying that the people liking the motor sounds of an auto racing (formula1, nascar or whatever) are weirdos.
Nice of you to mention Dixie. She was my introduction to thru hiking videos. Happy New Year.
She was one of my introductory people too! She's taught me so much! As Roadrunner also does. 😄

I like to add music when I show landscapes or walk shots... but it's for regular videos... I probably wouldn't do it for daily vlogs on a thru hike.
I personally like music when just showing scenery. I follow Capn Jack and find myself humming the music he uses while I hike. Love it!

@@danmercier8871 Aww, merci Daniel, je ne savais pas, désolé. I guess you read French by your French name. so she DID complete hike the missing links.
😁 👣 👍
Well said and great advice. I once said to a clogger that her music obscured her narration.
She said, ‘fine, don’t watch them.’
I haven’t and I won’t.
Also, I would wager that a good many of you subscribers let the ads play because it’s good for you.
Does it make any difference for the content provider (vlogger) when you hit the Skip button as soon as it appears?
@ At one point, I think that was true. So much has changed at TH-cam, I don’t know for sure. Maybe RR will enlighten us.
If you like raw video, check out my 2019 PCT playlist. HNY! 🍻
Yes, yes you are correct on those looong intros!! Not on every day’s video pls! Daily viewers want to get to the experience of that particular day.
You mentioned that you monetized your videos, how do you address your videos in National parks where I understand you need a permit?
Check out Outdoor Adventures Channel. He explains this in detail.
This is going to be good. There have been many who were insufferable and irritating.
Do hashtags in your description help.
She has hashtags, so I would guess that is affirmative.
@@MaxZomboni I should have looked. Thank you.
I should hire MaxZomboni as my personal assistant 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗 thanks for answering this for me (ps I’m not being sarcastic here)
This was so helpful to me! Many of your points are the reasons that I appreciate watching your videos! 🤩
I was one of those vloggers that bailed... wishing I had watched this video through some time warp back in 2019. 😃 But one day I will post again. Actually I've already learned a lot just from watching how you put your videos together, but all of these pointers listed out really helps. Thank you!!!! 😁
Happy New Year,
I would add:
Vloggers who overshare personal business/are needy,
Ones who are phoney,
Ones who are well-known and thirst for free shit (Magic)
Ones who think they can have their dog everywhere, even where prohibited.
Too much music - I tune out. I wish the Captain did not play throughout.
I like the daily vids to be 8-12 mins. That's my sweet spot. I have other interests I like to watch, so 20+ mins would really have to keep my attention.
Ill also be hiking the A.T. in 2025
what kinda vlog r u doing?
You forgot to mention the river crossing trail lol
You should hike the Silk Road to visit my Mongolian ancestors.
I just went back and looked at the comments on Justin and Anna Hit the Trail's
PCT 2024 Episode 44 video.
A couple of things that make me give up on a channel:
- Don't expect perfection but poor sound quality is a killer.
- Video quality actually isn't as important as sound but there are limits
- Music or not isn't important for me but fading music in and out repeatedly for a couple of seconds each time is annoying.
lol as soon as you said “don’t shove your camera in peoples faces” I knew Somewhere would surface as an example. One side effect of having a channel is your viewers get to know you very well. On a side note as part of a vlogging tips video including some examples of good editing software available on phones would have been nice.
I use Splice and really like it!
One thing I'd add is don't take long videos of your feet while you're walking. I see so many people do this. It makes me dizzy to watch and isn't very interesting besides. Just a personal peeve of mine.
It’s all about having a balance. 😂🤣
Haha I guess that depends on how long the shot is. I wouldn't want to watch a 30 minute video of nothing but feet. But foot shots are kind of cool if they are not overdone. It gives the viewer chance to see what the ground and the trail looks like.
Happy New Year, and thanks for sharing these tips! I'm not a vlogger but I've toyed with the idea more than once.
People wanting to hear breathing are weirdos
They are usually the good kind of weirdos 😀
It is like saying that the people liking the motor sounds of an auto racing (formula1, nascar or whatever) are weirdos.
