Nice video! I have a 2016 sv leaf 30kwh, just checked with leafy pro and my SOH is down 92% with 4000 miles. Got the car end of April. Battery degrade bad here in Nevada
Thanks for another great video. I find the rain is a real killer, but 50mph roadworks really help. Wish I had your confidence with the bigger trips. Worries about the ecotricity app make things worse. Looking forward to graduating from my 24kw in a couple of years.
Bit of a delayed comment from me but really useful as I am mulling over getting a Leaf at some point. I'm retired and do a low mileage with the odd slightly longer trip and this video has helped me to a decision which is to delay getting a Leaf until the 30kw versions become more widely available on the second hand market. That 100 plus range is a big help for the odd journey as is the 8 year battery warranty.
Just remember those batteries won't always have a 100 mile range. I may also get a Leaf but I'm on the list for the Bolt too. I think the price may come in too high but I do like the range. Lose 30 miles and you still have over 200 left. Lose 30 miles on a Leaf and you're down to 70 or 80. OK but not great.
Bought a Nissan eNV200 van three years ago from a company in Stockport. They were useless. Sent me off to Blackpool with 44 miles range on the screen and an ecotricity card that didn’t work. I made it thanks to my iPad that took me the shortest possible route through the middle of every where at very low speed. On a full charge I should have managed 80 miles max. I arrived home with 12 miles left. Good on yeah Nissan!
Thanks for a realistic review. I've been thinking about the 30kw Nissan Leaf and you've made my mind up to get one when I've got the cash. And. I'll be able to charge it using our solar panels in the summer at least.
Incredible the difference in specified range between US and UK versions (both 30kWh batteries). 107 miles versus 150 miles. This trip seems to have come down roughly in the middle.
europe continental europe has lower speed limits and less highways, england has slightly higher speeds and more highways, and america has high speeds and lots of highways.
Thanks. A proper real life range test. I'm waiting for the 200 milers next year but this was really useful. This means the 60kWh leaf will do nearly 300 miles if driven really carefully but well over 200 miles as you drove in this video. Can't wait for the new Leaf, Bolt and Model 3. This is when the real shit hits the fan and the dawn of the end of the oil age will be upon us. Cool! : )
Steve Withers Yeah, I have no reservation at the mo. Feel I should just so I can wear one of those "My other car is a reservation" tee shirts haha I'll probably lease a 3 around 2019 or as soon as available. My 10 year old diesel is costing £350 per month in fuel, tax and repairs. For the same or less I should be able to get a 3 on lease including £25 of electric per month. Also government will pay most of the down payment. Sweet!
Nice, 116 miles is great. I did a 80 mile test on the 4 day test drive, on 50's and 70 roads, pushing it, and had around 20 miles left when we got back. So 100 miles total, and that wasn't being easy on the battery. Keep us updated on regular roads, and no hardly no motorway useage for a full charge, as that is mostly what I'd be doing on a 30kwh. Would be great if you managed 140 odd, as I was pushing it on motorways for the 4 days test pretty much
Hmm. I have been doing some tests lately on mine. In winter, no heater on. I got 4.5miles per kwh. Ended up with 99.3 miles with 8% left. Last night finished my journey's on 99.9 with nothing showing. Had to use auto heater for 20 miles. Very low battery warning. I believe it had 1 or 2% left. I'm not sure if this is like degrading or normal. 🙄 When you charge from low, how many kWh Dow it state was put in to 100%. I find that every hour gives me about 25%, so 4 hours is around 100. But after that time, it put 23.6 kWh in the battery. Should it not be nearer 30 if low. It's a 67 plate model. I'm thinking of upgrading to the 40kwh model and asked the dealer for a 24 hour test drive. So if it's not normal, I should see a massive improvement lol
I know this video is 3 years old and was made for UK viewers, but it would be SO helpful if there was a kilometer overlay. Most of the world doesn't speak miles. Otherwise good job Mr EV Man
Can someone tell me..... I bought my first Leaf yesterday - a 2015 S and trickle charged it last night. It shows 100 percent and 96 miles. I read it may be better to charge to 80 percent rather than 100. How would you do that? Can you turn on the car WHILE IT IS CHARGING and look at the display? I thought I read in the manual that the car had to be off while charging. It would be nice to have a display that shows you details while it is charging. Is it really better to only charge to 80 percent ?
From my understanding, I have the 2015 SV model and it is ok to charge to 100%. I believe the 80% rule was for the 2011-2014 batteries as they had some issues. If it was a real problem, they could set it in the software to charge only 80% but show 100% on the display, but I charge to 100% every day almost and still have 12 bars. Yes, you can turn on the display basically to the accessories mode with one start button press while the charger is plugged in and a 2nd start button press would actually start the car. You can do both while charging as I have done while running the A/C and radio for a couple of hours.
Hi, what's the story regarding battery degradation on the leaf especially the 30kwh I've just bought one from uk auction being delivered to Ireland tomorrow just concerned been reading lots of negative reports on this subject.car has 30k miles 2016 bought at right money so could turn it around with profit just looking into do I keep it or sell on. Thx in advance
I'd imagine the motor is smaller on this. I'm two bars down on a 2011. 60 miles is realistic for me. so what you just said is like life changing stuff. but I'll wait it out until my battery goes.
Hi great video and confirms the sort of mileage I'm getting with my 30kWh (also magnetic red). One question what was your kWh/mile for that trip? I average now in the 0.22 to .26 kWh/mile.
Thanks for posting. I've been watching your videos for a while now and researching if the Leaf would be a suitable replacement for our ageing but trusty Note. I find myself driving around and wondering how our journeys would fit in around and EV and this weekend was not different. We had a day trip to Harrogate, (nice place, we'll be back), travelling from just east of Lancaster, LA2 on A65 and A59. Just short of 60 miles. Looking at your video, it looks doable. What would your view be. Charge points are a bit thin on the ground that way.
It's all about the planning. In winter that journey would be a struggle tbh. It's easy for me as we can just take the other car but if I had to take the LEAF in winter etc then I'd probably go this route and although it'd take longer it's easily doable by stopping off at Blackburn Services. www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/Lancaster+LA2/Harrogate/Daisyfield+Street,+Darwen+BB3+0AT/Lancaster+LA2/@53.8686819,-2.4416728,10z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m26!4m25!1m5!1m1!1s0x487b6141d2138751:0x29a65ea1720e59b8!2m2!1d-2.685728!2d54.0112881!1m5!1m1!1s0x48794e237175bd01:0x3c084fbaadea4ff!2m2!1d-1.541812!2d53.99212!1m5!1m1!1s0x487b9ff7a218a565:0x69a3ca20806fba38!2m2!1d-2.4815359!2d53.7136262!1m5!1m1!1s0x487b6141d2138751:0x29a65ea1720e59b8!2m2!1d-2.685728!2d54.0112881!3e0
I've also asked pubs etc before if I could plug the car in somewhere (through a window once) as chargers didn't exist. Don't forget you can use a standard plug socket. You'll prob get about 12-15 miles per hour from a normal plug so after a pub meal you've got another 30 miles. 20,000 miles has cost me £450 in electric!
Wow. Interesting. I did a similar 100 mile journey ( on a test drive) but wasn't careful at all. I used cruise control set to 70 mph. The car ran out of juice at 82 miles and I decided not to buy. However, after seeing this, I'm tempted to have another test run and try a much slower speed. if I can get 100 miles on a single charge, this car would take care of 99.9% of my journeys.
Thanks for real mileage test. Undertaking a round trip of 500 miles plus shortly. See you have eco on, not noticed a lot of difference with this on and off on general local trips. Does it make a lot of difference on long motorway journey?
It just means you have to press the pedal harder to get same level of acceleration. A careful foot is as good but Eco mode just makes it easier to not waste energy.
Man, this has relieved me. I just put my deposit down last week for a 30kwh Tekna I was hearing elsewhere it was probably only going to do 90 miles...... My big commute (which is only once a week, the rest is 60-80 miles) is exactly 100 miles. I've been panicking that it can't do that. Looks like it will be ok. But then what about battery degradation?
I think the big killer for battery degradation is heat. That's why you guys seem to have less degradation than we do here in the US. I would think you will be fine for the first couple of years. After that, it will kind of depend on how much buffer you have now. i.e. If your long trip barely makes it now, then you will probably want to be looking for charging during your trip. But if your long trip makes it pretty easy, then you will probably be fine for another year or so. But even in the colder climates, batteries degrade a bit as they age. So 5 years in, there should be noticeable degradation. But as to whether noticeable is too much, that would be tricky. Then again, you will probably be trading it in on a new 400 mile version by then. ;-)
Well, I've done that 100 mile trip 3 times and at motorway speeds (55-70mph) it has to be charged halfway to make sure I doesn't run out on the return. It's cold, dark and sometimes wet and the battery doesn't like that. I could go on B roads and do 40-50 and probably be ok though. Very nice town car and works wonders in London. 50Kwh battery would be most desirable.
Oh another couple of questions - I've been using the Nissan evConnect app which is OK but nothing to write home about. Have you used it and how does it compare to the old CarWings stuff?
hello...i have one question. how long battery work if I will full charge and don't use car. example( if I Park Nissan on airport and fly for 3weeks on holiday) what story when I come back? how look then battery?
Hi ELM, I enjoy your videos, thank you! I have Panasonic 18650B batteries in my lab that I'm testing for a project (electric tractor) . I know they are not the same as the Leaf batteries but they are Li-Ion. After about 2 mos. just sitting on the bench I tested them to see how much energy they lost. After charging them to 4.2 volts the voltage after ~2 mos. was 2.411 volts. I'd say the internal resistance is quite low, that's good. Has anyone actually left a Leaf for a month and checked the battery level? You will have to do it with a meter as I don't think the bars are accurate enough.
There is an occasional draw on the main batteries as the 12v battery (that runs alarm/lights/doors etc on any normal car as well) uses the main drive batteries as a power source. There is no alternator. So if left a month the 12v would every now and then top itself up from the main drive batts. This means it couldn't really be tested.
115 miles with 4 in the car and 3 suitcases ha ha. Taxi going great. No regrets at all. I manage to do any day shifts no problem on single charge but have to charge it once on my 12 hour fri and sat night shifts but I have always managed to get on the charger. Like the fact that I put it on charge for half hour while I go subway to get a coffee. Beforehand I used to work the whole shift through without a break. I feel more relaxed after having the enforced break. Other lads say im losing money while im charging. Perhaps they have a point but I welcome that half hour now to recharge my own battery. Only thing I dont like is how dirty the car gets. I used to find with my other car I could drive it all week and be in 2 minds as to whether it needs cleaning. With the leaf it looks like a tip after every shift. Not a huge issue though. Car costs £200 a month more finance but saving £300 fuel so £100 up a month and it looks like I will be saving on other things such as brake pads and general servicing so happy days.
Thanks so much for your excellent videos I’ve watched virtually every one now during lockdown.... seriously considering a leaf as a second car now... and the running costs seem an incredible saving.. 100miles would normally be ample in normal use, but every so often my mum lives 50 miles away and is 47 miles motorway.. do you think this is still doable with a 30kw... thanks...
Did you bite the bullet and get a 30kwh Leaf Mr Lambert? I've just purchased on and am also banking on a 47 mile motorway journey and back to visit family, without needing to charge. Range Anxiety before I've even got hold of the keys 😂
Great video, thanks for a tremendous upload!! I drive a 2009 Focus Econetic (£30 tax and 67 mpg) and although it is awesome, I want a change. Do I pay £12000 for a year old 24kw Leaf with 5000 on the clock which will do a range of about 85 miles, or do I get a year old Focus Econetic that will be zero road tax, do 850 miles on a tank and 74 mpg? HELP!!!
Leaf range is variable. in hot, freezing or even wet conditions, expect extra battery loss. Leaf battery is meant to last 8 years/60000km, so 5000 km mileage is still new. home charger is expensive- may need upgrade your service, and if your commute stretches over 80km (50 miles) on highway, then is not good. i do 70 highway km and end up with 40-50% charge left at night.
So I've been watching your Leaf videos for about 100 years now, and am curious. Clearly Nissan has the technology to make a 200-mile EV...where is it? They've been at EVs as long as anyone. Do they think it would harm Altima sales?
I tried the new car. It is more heavy, less dynamic, but loved the range. There are batteries everywhere, even under the seats. Passengers sitting on batteries. In night time you will get only half that range.
every report regarding ideal battery charge levels state that never charging above 80 percent and never discharging below 20 percent is ideal for extending battery life. what are your thoughts. thanks
Sometimes. Mainly manually turned on as with the temp being at 15c the car wanted to put the heating on all the time which fogged up the windscreen so had to turn the AC on the old fashioned way.
I don't like modern screens either. All for looks and drag etc. They mist up, they ice up, they are a pain to clean inside and sometimes difficult to judge the front of the car when parking.... (wife!!!) ...Big wipers expensive to replace. Give me some of the older cars any day.
coolio, potentially only have to charge it every other day when i finally go down the electric route interesting stuff, we'll at least for me, not so much for Mrs Leaf though :)
The range is still way to short I don't do big miles but occasional trip to Tenby wales there are no chargers near range needs to be double that to bother change from my Zoe such little gain come on car companies everyone knows range is the main issue stop saying average miles only 30 a day but even mr one Mrs ave does occasional trips like me of 150 miles so get the range up then they sell loads it common sense so slow to do what's obviously needed.
Well, this proves this car is not ready for mainstream. You need at least a 350 - 400 kilometers of range per charge and the capacity to fully charge the car in less than 10 minutes at the station. You can thank this to the army of corporate people holding on the development of this technology for the last 30 years. Now that the situation is becoming literally unsustainable with the rise of China and India they are trying to deploy what are basically non practical prototypes to the public.
You're looking at this wrong. Its not whether or not a car is ready for mainstream. The question is are we ready to die when the ozone layer is destroyed
Wonderful Video. That sigh of relief from your wife as you backed into the garage was absolutely precious. Thanks for Sharing.
Nice video! I have a 2016 sv leaf 30kwh, just checked with leafy pro and my SOH is down 92% with 4000 miles. Got the car end of April. Battery degrade bad here in Nevada
Kyle L do you keep your car in a garage? How is your battery now? I’m looking to buy one a 2017 and I also live in Nevada. Thanks.
Thanks for another great video. I find the rain is a real killer, but 50mph roadworks really help. Wish I had your confidence with the bigger trips. Worries about the ecotricity app make things worse. Looking forward to graduating from my 24kw in a couple of years.

You're just making her head bigger!
Smokin' lady friend as we say here in the USofA. Oh and I liked the car video, too.

What?
Range sucks. It is a fucking joke of a car.
Great to see the family, again!! :)

+valentin colteanu all depends on cost. Would love a Model 3. New Leaf could be pretty awesome too though and maybe cheaper.
***** did you order the model 3?

yeh but how much of the planet has been disturbed by making that 3 or any elec car with there batterys???
Congrats on the journey. great result!
great info on the leaf. Looks like you were driving through colne on this video!

good test man. tarbert is 40 miles from Stornoway but over some steep hills. could easily do it on 1 charge.
worth it just to see her smile so much.
excellent .my 2011 Leaf has sold me on leccy driving .now all I need to find is an affordable low mileage Acenta 30kwh Leaf replacement
You picked a beautiful alternative to the ho hum fire engine red. 😀

62mph is my typical speed when going eco but traffic meant a good part was done at lower speeds.

Not got mine working yet thanks to Nissan.
hello...i have one question. how long battery work if I will full charge and don't use car. example( if I Park Nissan on airport and fly for 3weeks on holiday) what story when I come back? how look then battery?
Probably be on 95%+. Best to leave the power no more than 80% if it's to be stood a while.
Electric Leaf Man thanks.
Hi ELM,
I enjoy your videos, thank you!
This means it couldn't really be tested.
can't wait to see the bolts range.
You are a brave man! Another really helpful, useful, honest review. Great stuff.
Very appropriate video for me to watch as im going Edinburgh airport next thursday. 115 miles from mine. Think I will charge it but tempting ha ha
Do it you wimp! How's the taxi-ing?
We barely got 100miles on our goodwood fos video (which I'm sure you've watched!) which was fully laden so yeah I'd stop off!
£1200 per year! Keep it 9-10 years and it's paid for itself!
Only problem is I do 45,000 miles a year so after 4 years it will have 180,000 miles on. Can't see it going 9-10 years.
Range Anxiety before I've even got hold of the keys 😂
do you get money from Nissan? i've never seen sponsored links below a video
They don't even know I exist.
Wanting to get all old leafs sold? Retooling factories? Price of batteries making a 200m+ car unaffordable at present? Take your pick.
But Nissan has YOU to make outstanding videos about how great a 200-mile Leaf would be. Marketing, it's all marketing.
Good Review 👍
Hi ELM, when do you expect delivery or your Tesla 3?
2019 probably.
I thoroughly enjoy your videos & as I'm from Yorkshire I enjoy seeing familiar places!
I tried the new car. It is more heavy, less dynamic, but loved the range. There are batteries everywhere, even under the seats. Passengers sitting on batteries. In night time you will get only half that range.
Night time makes no difference.
The charge used by the vehicle's lights is insignificant compared to that used to drive the traction motor (or even the heating/aircon systems).
every report regarding ideal battery charge levels state that never charging above 80 percent and never discharging below 20 percent is ideal for extending battery life. what are your thoughts. thanks
No longer relevant. They've even removed the batt saver function from the car.
do you know if "trickle charging" with a 110 would extend battery life vs fast charging?
The lady was so serene. How does she put up with you lol....
Did you drive it in ECO mode? Or regular mode?
Eco, but ultimately it doesn't matter to the car, just makes it easier to drive efficiently for the driver.
Yup you married up buddy
keep in mind europe has lower speed limits, so 150 might actually be realistic over there.
15C = 59 F really outstanding milage.. impossible with the 24 KwH battery.
Was your air con on auto ? 🌲
What was your average speed on the motorway, dude, please?
Prob about 58mph mainly due to traffic. Also did a fair stretch crawling at 5-10mph. Best thing is to find a truck to sit behind and follow.
Thanks
Rain is really taking a lot of range away
She seems very interested in the fact that the traffic jam is the most efficient part of the trip. lol
my partner just rolls her eyes when talk about range and charging points etc.....
coolio, potentially only have to charge it every other day when i finally go down the electric route interesting stuff, we'll at least for me, not so much for Mrs Leaf though :)
You don't need to use the foot break! just put it in P
Impressive.
My dad does 600miles a week
It’s how much a day that matters.
You should look on your screen your average in Kw. It's foolproof.
leaf spy pro
Keep both hands on the steering wheel!
Majinga Zetto disagree
Majinga Zetto bullshit comes in all shapes and forms
You're looking at this wrong. Its not whether or not a car is ready for mainstream. The question is are we ready to die when the ozone layer is destroyed
lovely wife
If you had a proper car you wouldn't have to worry about this 😂😂
I have 2 cars. After all, having just one car is boring. When you pass puberty, you can comment. Til then, bye bye!
