Making a Metal 4x4 Post Driving Cap for Building MTB Features

  • In an effort to make driving 4x4's more efficient, we design a post driving cap to protect the top while we strike it with a sledgehammer. The only problem is that we're pretty bad at fabrication. If we can get this working, it will help us build mountain bike features just a little easier!

    Cut a “ + “ shape out of thick plate then bend into the shape! Then the only welds on the piece will not be on the striking surface.
    I’d also weld a nail or two on the inside. That way the cap will stay put on the post while you hammer and ideally transfer the energy into the post better instead of bouncing off

    Seth. I used to build and use a similar tool just to pop 8in deep, 2.5in round holes in the ground. I used 1/4 wall 2.5 pipe and the top plate was 3/16 thick. That 3/16 plate was destroyed after the first 60 or so holes. I ended up doubling up the top plate and plug welding it in the center and all around the outside. Your concept works great and is a stellar idea. Just needs a little more work. Really, the outside doesn't need to be that heavy. It just needs to be strongly attached to the top plate. The heavier it is, when it does get stuck for some reason, it will be a pain to get off. I think less material on the sides is a good idea, with a heavy top.

    If you make a v2 you could just bend a rectangular piece of metal into a "n" shape and just weld 2 square pieces of metal on the side so the thing you're constantly hitting is a single piece of metal and the welded part is just a decorative cap.

    • @gdijkema
      @gdijkema 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      This is what I was going to say. Just bend some real thick steel in an "n" as you say. Might even work to just cut off one side of the 4x4 box section and spread the sides a bit to fit over the post. Then just weld something smaller on the sides to act as strapping to keep it from falling off the post while hammering. Then there shouldn't be any stress from hammering going to any welds.

What I’ve found works best is getting yourself a pallet fork attachment for that excavator and using one of the fork spikes to poke a hole in the ground. Then take your post and use the bottom of your excavator bucket to push it into the ground. Have probably done this to a few hundred 8 foot half rounds and it works great. Have fun figuring it out!

    On the welding thing, you need to grind 45 degree angles so the weld actually has someplace to go once you grind it back and you don't basically grind back off al the weld.

    Love that you are learning to weld. I weld structural and am trained to weld pipe. No hate towards your welds. Just a tip. Bevel the sides of the metal to allow better penetration. Move slower with your movement and make sure your amperage is hot enough. Tack each side good and weld one side, let it cool. Weld the opposite side. Let it cool and repeat. Keeps things from warping too badly. I love seeing you weld. It's my passion, and I love when people want to learn. Keep doing more!

    I would recommend you to buy a 5mm thick steel sheet and cut a cross ( + ) with sides 4" out of it, also considering the added thickness of the sheet and then bending it into a cube and welding the sides. In this way you can actually control the dimensions of it with respect to the wood size and you can weld small 90° steel angles on all 4 welded edges for extra strength so that the welds won't rip on impact. I hope this may be helpful to you.

  • @MarvinWestmaas
    @MarvinWestmaas 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    When you had the square and just needed a top cap, if you had used a larger top square you could have welded it correctly in a 45 degree angle ( edit: from BELOW the strike surface, put the top square flat and put the sides on top and then weld them so it has room to bind the pieces ). Would have been even better if you used a thicker top cap as well since that's the part which distributes the load, more mass there helps.
    Edit2: for the sides if you don't have thicker plates you could try and add ribs from strips of the same metal. Those ribs will greatly enhance the rigidity and prevent warping and splitting.

  • @petewiththebeard2198
    @petewiththebeard2198 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nothing wrong with learning like this Seth! It’s still a salvageable project. Just cut the 4” box along the corners on two opposite sides lengthways leaving you with two enormous angle iron, then space them out wide enough to go over the 4x4 and weld them together again.
    The best part is bridging the gap with weld is great practice and you’ll be able to play with the welder on hotter settings. Your other welds only failed because they were cold and got mostly ground off. Don’t be scared of gaps in mig welding, perfect fit up is for tig.

      You're going to have a really bad time trying to bend steel thick enough to withstand the sledgehammer on top, especially trying to close it into a box like that. The HSS with the plate on top is the best way to go, but I would cut the plate about 1/4" larger than the HSS on all sides so you can do a much stronger and easier fillet weld. Those butt welds we was doing especially with his small wire feed and inexperience were super weak and had little penetration.

    Yes I know, another big-brain comment, but hope this helps. Having multiple pieces joined together, the joints are a guaranteed weak link, I would suggest taking sheet metal (3/16" thickness) and bend it in a C-shape then weld one triangular piece on each side like a corner brace to help it retain its shape. The other suggestion that might be easier is to cut off a 4" section of the square stock and cut off one of the sides so you end up with a C-shape piece, then thake the off-cut and cut it into 2 triangles to use them as corner brace if you want but that square stock is pretty tight so those braces are not totally needed. Great video Seth

    Seth, you just need a real welder, and someone that knows how to get proper penetration of the parent metal. Then get 5 squares and weld them up like you did at first, but with an actual structural weld.
    Most of us that weld will do something like this for next to nothing.

    Nice to see different things and projects happening. Angle grinder disks are known to explode and while nice to see some safety equipment, the energy in an angle grinder disk is such that fragments can go straight through and we don't want you out of action for too long - guards on angle grinders are there for a reason.

    I know it won't fit the 4x4s when he cut the steel tube.
    Seth forgot the inner dimensions of the square tube shoud be equal or larger than the outer dimensions of the wood. 😁

    • @gdijkema
      @gdijkema 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Seems he did account for it, since a 4"x4" post has true dimensions of 3-1/2"x3-1/2" and his box section is 4"x4" with 1/4" walls. Yes, yes, someone will mention tolerances, but what Seth really forgot to account for is that the box section has rounded corners while the post has sharp corners which interfere. Would work find if he manually chamfers every post before he drives it in.😅

    EDIT: Leave it in your rental with a hand file and in time the inside will get widened for you 😂

  • @beyond6storm
    @beyond6storm 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    concept was good,
    I'd suggest going with .20 inch thick sheet metal, cut a plus shape, bend the sides to form the cup, weld the sides. After this, get an inch-wide, 17-ish inch long, piece of sheet metal, and bend it around the mouth of the cup, to act as a reinforcement to hold the corner welds together, and in such a way that the ends of this reinforcement plate meet at the middle of one of the cup's sides (don't want that weld to be on top of the cup's corner welds, cause that would then become the first failure point) Weld the reinforcement onto the cup's mouth, weld the ends of the bent reinforcement plate together... should last a lifetime I believe.

    Please please put a guard on your grinder, it’s so unsafe without 🥽
    A disc could easily break if it’s used wrong. Or the pressure you apply while using the machine is too high⚠️
    Shrapnel could leave some serious injuries❤️‍🩹

      Also do not use the front of the disc like at 4:28 (especially without a guard). If a kickback happens there is a high change of getting hit by the disc since it is trying to push upwards instead of forwards.
      Edit: It also seems like the angle grinder is setup to go in to the wrong direction. The sparks should be flying towards you instead of away from you. That just seems like a accident waiting to happen.

    You could cut all the corners of metal and bend each side out slightly so it tapers up to top plate. Weld thick metal to replace the structure lost from cutting it. It might be tight at the top but the bottom would slide on fine. Think of a pyramid with the top cut off but much less of a slope to it.

  • @chivudan108

    Ok Seth, you just have to cut with your grinder, one of the corners, just till the upper welded part, this way you release some of the tension. If not working, cut the oposite corner too and put it on that 4x4 wood and to be sure it won't fly you can fix it with a small screw in a hole through one of the sides.
    Of course, this is the solution in case you won't make another larger cap. Hope it is useful and reliable.

  • @BrianBast
    @BrianBast 2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    For real my dude you need to put the guard back on your angle grinder, I'm genuinely concerned for your safety, at 4:37 if the blade would have broken you could have lost an arm or fingers or hand, and at 5:01 if the blade would have broken you could have got shrapnel in your lungs or heart, play that's a legit potentially deadly mistake my dude in the type of Blade you're using or the type that break all the time, it's not uncommon to the point where if you keep on using those blades consistently there's a good chance is's going to happen to you one day. I never ask for likes but please like this so Seth sees it.

    Not to be "that guy" Seth, but please either put the guard back on the grinder or at least use grind+ function on the Vlukan helmet (there is a switch near the "delay time" dial). As you probably know, those cutting disks can explode and turn your face into a meat-pie if you don't have the proper protection. This advice is coming from a NYS DOT certified Stick Welder.

    Get a sheet of plate steel, thick enough, 8x8". Weld some pieces underneath the middle of one side that will allow you to place it on the end of the post, and keep it in place. The unwelded flat side of the 8x8" plate will be facing up. Use the excavator bucket to drive the posts.

  • @eformance
    @eformance 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    If someone asked me to make one of those, I'd go with minimum 1/2 thick plate for the strike surface, 3/4 if I can get my hands on it. An 8 pound sledge is probably generating over 3000lbs of force for a split second, therefore to distribute the load you need thicker material.

  • @deanrapp5658
    @deanrapp5658 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Seth use a piece of 6” sch 40 pipe and weld 1/4” plate on the one end. Cut the plate bigger then the outside diameter of the pipe so you can make a fillet weld. Always bevel the end of the material you are welding you can make multiple passes. The reason the first one broke was you made a butt weld then grinded the weld off to make it look pretty. But you had no weld left to hold it together.
