One cannot coach a proper catch on the erg. The reason is that the chain is slack at the catch and one travels back quite a distance on the slide before the chain is taut and there is weight on the handle. The only solution I can think of is to have a very strong accelerating rewind of the chain, so that there is weight on the handle immediately one springs off the stretcher. The Row Perfect machine is a better mechanism for improving the catch.
To obtain a grip at the catch one has has to slow down into the catch or hang to give the chain time to get taut (a technique to the best of my knowledge - I stand to be corrected - promoted by FISA until a few years ago to give an oarsman time to bury the blade before driving to eliminate bum shoving and check in the boat ). Both are anathema to a good stroke in a boat as demonstrated by Drew Ginn .

•BFM Productions• When she starts the drive, there is a wee bit of slack in the chain/cord before power is being applied to the flywheel. I suppose the idea is to match the speed at which you drive the handle back more closely with that of the flywheel at the instant the handle changes direction, so there is no ‘freewheeling’ effect. I hope that’s right/makes sense. I
