I have learned from experience, being poorly recommended an overpriced "locks" shampoo that was based on saponified oils, that in the absence of any sort of surfactant, this is a SOAP. If you want to vet your shampoo, use it for a while and comb out a loc to see how it is working. I had 2 year locs at the nape of my neck that were choked with residue, but my newer locs cleaned with an actual shampoo were clean and clear! My hair is fine and wavy/curly for reference. I have partial locks, and would not use any oil based, Bronner-type soap on my loose hair, so definitely not for my dreads. Paul Mitchell and Giovanni are old tried and true brands that make beautiful and cleansing tea tree, lavender, peppermint shampoos that are gentle and get the job done!

Very true. It’s not shampoo. Stick with a good quality shampoo (not drug store shit) and your hair will thank you

I have fine hair, and castille soap made my dreads feel so dry and crunchy and fried. I hated it. I've been using a bar shampoo from earthling co. So far so good.

I'm brand new to all this. My locks are less than a month old. I purchased a high dollar dreadlock shampoo, which i adore, but it is expensive. I also have several bars of Ivory Soap so ill keep that in mind to at least rotate from one to the other. Currently washing my hair once every seven days and oiling my scalp with jojoba oil mixed with tea tree and lavender all mixed in distilled water once or twice a week. Love the info you share with us!

So speaking of swimming and chlorine.... is it really hard on our locs? Pools about to open this weekend and I want to be sure I'm caring for my locs PROPERLY during the summer. Should I be washing as soon as I get home? And should I actually buy a swimmer's shampoo just for the pool water?

Just don’t get in the pool water is the best idea 🤣
      Jk
There’s swimmers caps for locs and protective styles, so check into that.
Chlorine is horrible, so find the salt water pools if you can. Else, lastly, sure…some chlorine stripping shampoo will be wanted…
Though I just wouldn’t do it at all.
I mean, I literally have a special pair of cutting scissors for the kids that swim because it changes the hair that bad. Coats it and dries it out wicked bad babe.
