  • This new Kaweco Sport AL Piston was provided for review by Tom Oddo of Goldspot Pens. I unbox it, talk about the parts and features of the pen, provide some size comparisons and measurements, and then do a writing sample. After the writing sample, I talk about what I like and what I don't like about the pen. Please feel free to use the chapters provided below to skip to various parts of the review.

    Great video, Doug! I have been debating buying this pen, as I already daily pocket carry a black Al-Sport that I have fitted out with one of Kaweco’s “premium” nibs or my E95s clipped by the bottom button of a polo. This pen just looks so much more upscale than the standard Al-Sports and Classics. I’m a user, not a collector, so I don’t buy many expensive pens and tend to lean towards pocket pens more than longer pens because I have been in outside sales for 30 years and the pocket format works best for me and my analog way of doing things. I think your video has moved me off the fence to go ahead and get one to put in the rotation. Keep bringing the great vids!

    Thanks for the video Doug. At this price point, a standard Gold nib should have come with it. This pen is in the Pilot e95s, Pilot Vanishing Point price range.

    Thanks Doug and Gold Spot Pens. I had not considered a Kaweco Sports in the past. I think that I do need to feel it though, because I normally don't like small pens. The smalllest I go is my pair of Pilot Elite's. That nib does look very interesting though. I suspect there is a trip to my local pen supplier here in Singapore - Fook Hing. Have a great week.

    Very nice review. The German reading reminded me of the computer room warning sign in faux German. That brought back fun memories. Thanks Doug for that memory lane trip. I am curious how well the cap finial fits if the clip is removed. This is definitely under consideration. Will be getting my Rickshaw lanyard sleeves on Monday and one is sized for a Kaweco sport. Hmmmm. Is past me trying to make future me happy?

    Nicely comprehensive review! I could see having this pen. The only Sport I have is the Bronze. Now, there is some heft. I carry it all the time. I had gotten a clip for it which I used a while, but don't now. So the patina has a bit of a "tan line", rather like my forearm when I forget my watch. Hopefully, this will age away.

    Thanks, Doug. I had seen this pen when it was released but it did not appeal to me that much. I had a plastic sport that I used as a beater pocket pen, but I lost it. I also have an AL Sport in Golden Espresso that looks cool but doesn't get much use. Your positive review of this version has me considering it at some point as it seems to address the issues the other pens have. Cheers!

    I have a Kaweco Sport Bronze, 48 grms. That's quite heavy. Still, I really like writing with this pen. I also write with the gold colored Medium nib; same is yours, great nib, one of the best I have. This piston filler doesn't inspire me, I prefer cartridges. Good video, thanks. Greetings from Belgium.

    I'd love to have a Sport, but too small for me and I don't care for the smaller nibs either. I have the same nib on a Dia2 in Amber finish and I got an architect ground later on. I ended up with a Supra in Brass with a number 6 nib. I like it a lot. Great video Doug!

    Dear Doug, many thanks for your review ❤ As you probably were slightly outside of your comfort zone already, how about taking on some more German metal pens, the likes of Otto Hutt or Waldmann, for instance? 😉😂

    Kaweco does sell a special nib unit for the piston version, and at a reasonable price (15-ish Euros here in Germany). Beware that it is a different one than for the cartridge-filled metal ones, though.

    I’d be curious to see your review after a little while regarding the cap seal. The black/gold design makes me want to put something like platinum carbon black in it, which would end up being hugely problematic if it doesn’t seal well :-(

      I've had the pen stored in my 48 pen binder, full of ink, and unused since I posted the review. I just took it out now and it wrote the first time - no issues.

    The way that the posted cap removes the blind cap, would really irritate me. I have a Kaweco student pen and that's enough for me.

  • @JosephDickson

    Hmmm, I wonder if that inner cap is missing, doesn't seem like something they'd intentionally remove.

    I am betwixt and between on this model. I like that it is heavier than the standard Sport. It is just the size, meaning width of the section. It would seem to be too narrow for my hand, but you have found it to be comfortable. Would you use it for long writing sessions?

    • @InkquiringMinds
      @InkquiringMinds  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes. It is comfortable with a good heft and I can write with it at length.

    Nice review Doug. I was mildly surprised you liked the pen as much as you do given your feelings about the other models. I myself have 4 two of which are the Ebonite and Bronze Sports. This review has helped me see the pen in a different light, but if I get one it will be much later. From what I've gotten from other reviews, the nib unit in the piston has a slightly different design which means the regular Kaweco nib units won't work in it. And one tip - when it comes time to re-lubricate a piston pen, instead of using something metal I found these wooden sticks in the cosmetics department that have a point on one end and slanted on the other. I used the slanted end to lubricate the 2 used M600 Pelikans I got recently. It works perfectly and will not scratch the material in the process.

  • @Mikey-ii8ef
    @Mikey-ii8ef 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Would this ever replace an E95? I suppose it's more durable, but I'd hate to scratch it up, so if I was looking for a rugged pocket pen, maybe a plastic Sport, or a brass/bronze that would age more gracefully from extensive pocket carry - but those are heavy. A nice pen, but for the price, I'm not sold.

    I will pass on this one. Hope you are feeling better. I just bought 3 Jinhao mini 82's. I am enjoying these so much better than the Kaweco's. Those are too little and the threads cut into my fingers.
    I have put Washi tape on the threads which made it better. I will keep the Jinhao mini's out as my runners and one is a regular Fude, not mini which I am having a blast with.

    This new Kaweco fountain pen with piston mechanism is a charming and coherent continuation of the Sport series. The design is an absolute success, but it has one flaw that surprises me.
    The dimensions of the new Kaweco are identical to those of the regular Sport model, with one exception: the section goes deeper into the cap. On the regular Sport model, it measures 3.7 cm, while on the Sport Piston, it measures 4.3 cm. For this reason, the fountain pen is 6 mm shorter.
    This inexplicable fact reduces writing comfort, giving the strange impression that something is wrong. That's very unfortunate...
