My older brother and I loved to play games with my 91 year old mother. In one game we played, each of us kept returning back to start. NOT realizing we had the rules wrong. After the 3rd round my mom once again had to return to start. SO in her frustration she through her game piece across the room. I found we reread the rules and had them wrong. We all laughed our butts off. Two days later my mom unexpectedly passed away. It is one of our fondest memories with her in her latter years. 👍❤️👍

The first time my wife and I played Santorini, we didn't realize that domes were only supposed to go on top of 3 level buildings. We were capping off buildings at one level, just to stop each other from being able to get anything close to a winning condition, so we were just getting nowhere. To be fair to us, the how to play section of the rules doesn't mention this, and on the box cover, it looks like domes are on buildings of all sizes. Turns out the game is more fun when you play it right. 😅

Our biggest game mistake we still joke about YEARS later was with Battlestar Galactica. Lonnnnng game, nothing seems to be happening - hidden role game but somehow we screwed up and NO ONE was the Cylon (traitor) - it was a traumatizing event lol. Same players another time, we somehow had TOO MANY CYLONS. Never need to play that game again, but we still bring it up after all these years.

Among my friends, I'm the one who's into board games. I buy the games and then teach the rules to my friends. I think it's hilarious that I often misinterpret or miss a rule (usually a small thing, but sometimes not!) when I'm teaching. No one seems to mind; most people are just grateful that I'm bringing the game and have taken the time to learn it (sort of, lol). The best example is The Red Cathedral. There were three or four rules I missed in this one. I discovered two mistakes after one game play, another mistake after a different game play, etc. The latest error was around the use of gems when placing decorations out on the cathedral: I had one part of it wrong. Oh well!
Bottom line: No one is immune from learning or teaching board games incorrectly. It just happens sometimes and it's part of the experience!

I remember your Dune Gaff, it was the conflict cards. You only use 10 but they give you like 20 for added replayabality. Here's mine:Wingspan. My wife and I have always played it that on your turn, if you have the food, you can play a bird right out of the tray as a "play a bird" action. It wasn't until playing it on BGA that I realized that should take two actions. You have to use a "gain bird cards" to take them into your hand and then "play a bird" action. Still a great game, and a great experience :).

I taught Abyss to our best friends a bit ago. At the time I had played the game 3 times. Somehow, I told everyone that one of the game end triggers was when someone gets to 10 lords (it’s actually 7). I kid you not the game took an extra hour and really overstayed it’s welcome! And it was a new favourite of mine and I was very excited to show it to these friends!!! Hopefully we can play it again with the right rules so they see how great it is.

I can so relate. We played Brass wrong initially. Just a bit. Playing two cards instead of one, so we were confused at the end of the era. When I taught the big book and bruges, I was entirely wrong and basically ruined it for everyone...it was a sad time 😢

Monopoly is a perfect example of a game where I got the rules wrong. And I’m convinced everyone has a bad opinion of monopoly because no one play it correctly.
I remember noticing we got the rules wrong when I was a teenager. I had been taught how to play the game by my friends but was then teaching the game to some other friends and was looking up how much money each person gets to start. And I came across rules thst dealt with auctions of properties.
Turns out as soon as anyone lands on a property he or she can buy the property. If they choose not to it immediately goes up for auction and every other player can then bid on the property. Never played that way before. It seemed kind of complicated so,we just went back to the old way of playing. But there were a bunch of other rules thst we ignored and everyone seems to ignore those rules as well.
Not sure if I’ve ever played monopoly the right way, actually.

I wish I could remember how we played it wrong, it's been a decade since it happened, but my friends and I learned Seasons as a much friendlier game. I do remember that we didn't pass the first player marker from round to round and then there were a few other things that occurred in the next couple games we realized we had biffed. Most of the group hadn't played much beyond like Catan, Carcassonne, Bang, etc. around that time and Seasons is already a weird enough game to learn. It went from a game I genuinely enjoyed by playing it wrong to one I've never wanted to play since we played it correctly and it was so painfully mean.

My husband and I thought Horrified was way too easy after the first play through so we played it again with more monsters and blitzed it again and thought surely we are doing something wrong, it can't be this easy. Great topic! This is a reoccurring theme for me and my hubby. We usually discover the "error" on his turn, where of course it totally benefits him. I think the last game we played "very" wrong was Oh My Goods! We just assumed it's all cards how complicated could it be... But activating the cards out of order can really change your scoring dramatically LOL.

This is a tricky one for me. I absolutely hate to be wrong, I consider myself well read and understand things correctly because I am adamant about reading it twice and thrice to ensure I know it by heart by the time I teach and play it.
When called out on it later, I, historically, got very defensive about it and it would cause rifts in our gaming group.
Part of getting older for me was learning to understand it's okay to be wrong and working together to make sure we have the correct info going forward to do the thing right.
So now, when someone asks for clarification or for me to double check the rules. I will happily pull it out, re-read it outloud, and then discuss with the table the ruling or interpretation (we know this is a huge issue in the industry).
We come to a general consensus and I'll apologize for mis-interpreting or misspeaking if it was indeed on me for my initial teach.
For the record, I'm one of 2 primary suppliers and teachers in my group so it's important for me understand the rules completely before I teach a bunch of other people incorrectly potentially leading to a bad experience.

No matter what game I get I read the rulebook and watch multiple videos. Then with much confidence I teach that first gameplay to wife and or friends. It seems to go great then I watch another play through after the fact and realize.... oops forgot that step and oh didnt do this.., so I reread rulebook and go crap forgot a couple things...my wife and I laugh and just go play it again but correctly. She always tells me with a first time playthrough this is our test game because we have yet to play a new game right on first try. And I have over 300 games and I have played them all multiple times. It an ongoing joke in our home, we always laugh about it..

We repeat a rules mistake on Horrified every time we play. We roll for the monsters' attacks on every one of their turns, but you are only supposed to roll the dice if they are in a space with a character they can attack. So it makes the game extra hard. But we play the game so seldomly that we forget the rule each time we play!

Even as a light gamer I've gotten so many rules wrong. Some highlights (or maybe lowlights):
Machi Koro: the red cards that steal coins trigger BEFORE income is collected, not after.
7 Wonder Duel: when a facedown card is exposed, it is immediately flipped faceup (you don't ever take a card that is facedown).
Welcome to... if you can't place the number, you cannot take the bonus.
That's Pretty Clever- the start of the 4th round gets you an X OR a 6, not both.
Jaipur - you can only sell a type of good once during a round, not multiple times.
Mandala - you cannot add multiple cards of the same type to the middle of either Mandala. Just one card. Also, there is a hand limit of 8. Played both wrong for the first five plays.
LLAMA (or LAMA, or Don't Llama): the llama cards are a 7/0 and can only be played on a 6 or a llama, they are NOT wild cards. (Actually, we house-ruled that they ARE wild cards and when you play them you have to declare the number they represent. More fun for us that way. Sorry, Knizia.)

Great video and topic. I am designen a board game and have got a new way of seeing rules to a game. It is so easy to make changes to a game when making it. So the chances that a game is played with correct is very low, but it does not matter as long as the group has a great time.

For about … a year after we got Clank!, we played it wrong. It took a Game Night! episode of Lincoln, Dave, Aaron and Nicki playing it for us to go … hmm, are THEY playing it on ‘easy’ or are we doing ‘hard’ mode. Maybe we should check the rules.
Turns out you indeed do not have to draw from the dragon bag ever turn there is a monster present in the lineup.
We had been playing it, so that if there was a dragon card in the lineup row after someone’s turn - you do a dragon attack. So we were all trying to kill all the monsters as quick as possible. Turned out, you only needed to do an attack when a dragon card arrived on the row…
Had a lot of default wins because someone was the only one out of the dungeon while the rest all died in the Depths 🤣🤣

Of course people should have fun gaming.
    Of course mistakes will happen.
The problem comes when people loudly and publicly comment about a game being bad or broken ... then discover they played it wrong and say nothing.
Or reporting/bragging about their high scores ... then discover they played it wrong and say nothing.
By the way, I have a working theory that designer games are played 'wrong' in major and minor ways more than half the time ... and mostly people don't ever realize it.

Oh my goodness… second time going through Jaws of the Lion, got to scenario 15 with the alchemy tables that spawn all the imps, and kept getting our butts handed to us! Played through five or six times, utterly annihilated, and getting extremely frustrated. Took a break, hopped on BGG to look for some tips, and the first thing I saw was “don’t forget that with two players, not all the tables spawn imps.” Cue my extreme embarrassment, in that having completed the campaign before, we thought we were solid in the rules enough that’d we’d just skim the campaign setup rather than reread thoroughly. Looking forward to giving it another (rebalanced) attempt! 😅

It was epic and amazing and so satisfying..... as I was packing up I realised that I had placed LEVEL 7! It happens almost all the time, but usually a minor interpretation of a mechanic or scoring condition. If everyone is playing by the same rules and alternatives, no biggie. I try to catch them, usually after a rule book reread on a future play.
My worst case with this was with a game called Yspahan. It literally took 3 separate plays / rule book revisits to catch all of the mistakes I was teaching... it's not that complicated of game either.
And, with Patchwork, I'm still not sure I have gotten 100% correct....we always end up with scores either in the negative or max of 5 pts.... and why does it come with so many buttons....I think we play with a quarter of them.🤪

Yeah, in Monopoly if you play with any house rule that brings money back into the game, or adds new money, like getting money when you go to Free Parking, it breaks the game and makes it go on forever. Also, a rule most people forget, or never knew, is that you are supposed to auction off every property people land on, assuming they didn't want to buy it first. Completely speeds up the game. A game of Monopoly should be like 90-120 minutes tops if you play by the proper rules. Yeah... probably still too long, but better than the epic, endless games some people remember from their youth. ;-)

Jeff, I play Monopoly the same way, but, I do remember learning that, "all taxes, etc go in the middle," rule somewhere along the way. It's definitely more fun that way. Dune Imperium ends when either a player gets 10 or more points or if the 10th Conflict card is resolved. so you must be talking about having too many conflict cards in the deck (there are 18 total and you are only supposed to only put a total of 10 for each game). It's interesting though because for the handful of times I've played of this game, we never ever got to the end of the conflict deck and it was always a rush to the 10 points.

You guys are silly. Why would you do that? Play the game right.
There are rules for a reason!
    (/Troll-mode off) :D
To be fair, skipping the AI turn is not an uncommon occurrence in a cooperative game, since some games ask you to activate the AI once a round (at the end or beginning of it) and other games ask you to activate it at each player turn. It's pretty easy to mix them up. In fact, I made the exact same Horrified mistake playing "The Big Book of Madness"... We corrected the rule at 70% of the game length: it was already to late not to ruin the experience.
The last game we played wrong in my home was Star Clicker. An excellent and very unique cooperative family game that I like A LOT - by the author of Colt Express! - but whose english rulebook can be ambiguous sometimes. The mistakes were significant (We were crushed in easy mode... xD), but not enough to ruin the fun of the game this time.
Rulebooks' ambiguity is in my experience the main reason for rules blunders. When you have experience with board games, most of the time you realize the actual rule while playing, but in some cases the rules are so bad and so half-baked that you come to dislike the game (looking at you Stuffed Fables...). "Rules are there for a reason!" xD

90% of the rules mistakes mentioned in these forums (and everywhere) are people missing things that are very clearly stated in the rules.

I play games wrong all the time and also don’t care 😅 we played Agricola wrong for over a year - I didn’t know the resources piled up if you didn’t take them! but it made me love the game even more when we learned the right rule lol
also, just played Jamaica and I thought the dice told you what hold to put 1 resource in, not that you got that many resources 🤪 was so much better when we fixed it hehe

    Does anyone play monopoly correctly?😆
Played Unfathomable pretty wrong the first time. Also, the first time I played Friday i clearly thought I had won my first game. Boy was i mistaken. My mind was not fully processing what I needed it to. I needed like 30-40 something to beat the pirates but score was like 12. Since I was able to draw 10 cards the #10 was embedded in my head. so when I scored 12 I was just like, did I just win? I think I won, I won!
The next day kept thinking about how I won my first game. then ended up doing a replay and realized my mistake.

Just last night, I decided to pull out Spirit Island to refresh the rules, because I'm teaching it to folx on Sat and I was like, "Wow! This is sooooo much easier than it used to be!" Realized halfway through the Fear deck that I was doing unlimited card plays and not what was revealed on my board. ope

Also this past week: me and Rich have been getting into Pandemic, and we got through 3 games in a row and I was like "this game is so meh, maybe we're just too good at cooperating #couplegoals" and then come to realize: we were putting the cures on the board at the beginning and not reinfecting when we got rid of all the cubes. ope

Also: the game of Cafe that will LIVE IN INFAMY, wherein we finally realized we were scoring the warehouse wrong, and half the table that had thought they were sooooo clever by stocking up cubes of 2 colors, realized they had just lost the game and the person in last place won.

My wife and I make gaming mistakes all the time, and if you play enough games, sometimes you just feel it's wrong. We usually just correct it going forward. First couple games of any game don't really count for us.

My wife and I recently played Paleo. On the cards that have a numbered discard and a remove action: instead of discarding two are removing that card, we were removing the next two cards. It made the game very different, incredibly hard, but almost created a weird chaos difficulty variant. We alllllllmost won twice, then (on our 6th play) played correctly and won easily lol. Great video

In 7 wonders duel I realized you are supposed to flip over any upside-down cards that suddenly become exposed. My wife and I probably played over 15 games before I realized that was a thing. We were so used to not flipping it over that we just kept doing it how we’ve always done it and I’m someone that doesn’t really like house rules unless we’ve played the game enough or discussed the change it’s going to produce. But I think it creates a more interesting decision space, so we just kept rolling with it

I think it is pretty usual to have some minor rules mistakes in a "new teach", and I think everyone should be OK with that. But I do believe there is some value in doing a "rules review" so that everyone who played does know the correct rules. I taught my friend Tiny Epic Galaxies wrong (spending power only let you reroll one dice not all of them) she loved it and a month later they had bought it and taught at least 10 other people incorrectly because of my "bad" teach. From that point onwards whenever I teach a new game I always do a rules review and let everyone that played it (if I can) know if I find any rules errors :)
I think cult of the new does not help with this though as quite a lot of people only play a game once or twice and move on.

We played Gloomhaven wrong for like 20 scenarios. With the advantage, we were pulling sometimes 10 cards because it would let you roll to the next card then the next. I think we had a round where we went through like half of the modifier deck on a single attack….wooops

each new game i think we get one thing wrong at least but nothing game breaking and we often find the error soon enouth or we just don't care sometimes. I don't mind honest mistake but i hate when someone tells me he knows the game, we play and then i find out he doesn't, he only read half of the rules so we have to reread them in the middle of the game....it almost ruined my first game of mantion of madness...not everyone is made to read rules and teach. After 10 games my boyfriend will still make mistakes so i almost never let him explain a game xD
Thanks for the warning on dungeon pets because i like to do that on BGA, i did it with Gaia project and Terra mysthica, very bad idea too !

Pandemic!! My family and I played pandemic wrong and we won the first THREE times we played and I was like. There is NO way we win this easily… like we don’t always win games. So then i reread the rules again (which took me forever to learn and understand in the first place). BUT thats when i realized we did it wrong. And now its tougher and so much more intense. LOL

I took ganz schon clever to my friends house and her hubby doesn't really play boardgames and is also a..unique... person...he's a hard teach. But I figured this would be easy. But after I explained the game to everyone he decided that what he heard is you roll the dice ONE TIME and choose all your dice from that one roll instead of re-rolling every time. Which completely breaks the game...but then my friend, his wife, did it...then someone else did it...so..that is how I also played this very bizarre game of gan schon...and I never told them it was wrong!

Oh and I've ALSO played horrified wrong...the very first time I played and taught it to my S.O I thought you used one action to pick up one item instead of all items in the space you were in. It made it Soo much more difficult being like am I going to pick up all 4 things in my space or am I going to move??!! Now we play it right and sometimes he's like hey would should play it on hard mode with your unknowingly house made rule. Lmao.

I know I'm way late with this comment but I attempted to teach Eldridge Horror without having played and only reading the rulebook. So I may have had everyone pull a mythos card after their turn instead of everyone moving and acting and then pulling once we all had our turn....
"Geez, this game really is tough. Even harder than I thought it would be."
" Oh, man, we are totally screwed. Are you sure we should draw from the mythos deck each time one of us takes their action?"
At least that session didn't last very long but I will never hear the end of it.😐

Dune Imperium was the round conflict cards , I think there's only supposed to be 1 out of the maybe 5+ Level 1 Conflict cards.. and since the points and rewards escalate, you essentially played like 4 extra early rounds with very low reward for the winners of the conflict 🤣

I not only play the game wrong but sometimes teach the game wrong. Whoops. Reading rulebooks is hard and that's partially my fault because attention span but also partially the fault of the rulebook writers. So many of them are just not written well! My sister and I often also solo a game and be like, "I beat the AI by like....forty points. That can't be right. I must have misread something...." (Also, tables are one big coaster, I agree.)

If I’m teaching the game, i feel much more responsible and try hard to get things right. I was relearning Istanbul and played multiple play throughs getting the movement rules wrong. I dropped off an assistant for every space, instead of just the space I was moving to. Many of the cards made no sense until I figured out what I had done wrong. Finally reading through the BGG forums for the game helped me figure out what I’d done wrong.

I taught Bang! last month to my cousins and my nephews after refining my own grasp on the rules playing over and over on BGA…or so I thought. I was the sheriff and my nephew had rather brilliantly (especially for his first time) fooled us that he was the deputy and his dad was the renegade and so I shot his dad down. It was one of those great game night moments everyone gasped and wailed and marveled how expertly we had been played. But what I should have remembered after making this same Sheriff blunder numerous times on BGA is that if the sheriff guns down his deputy he loses all the cards in his hand. I forgot and then eventually my wife (the other deputy) and I “won” against the intrepid renegade but would we have had I remembered this rule? It really didn’t even occur to me until hours later and then I felt both ashamed and like as you all correctly put it “Who cares?” It was a super fun night with great moments with my family and everybody enjoying learning this cutthroat game 😂 You just do your best and learn each time.
BGA is pretty great for learning a game through repetition that just isn’t possible in real life. Plus the computer can hold all the scores and rules in its robot head in a way that we can’t.
Also the first time I taught Wits and Wagers I ignored the fact that you could bet your winnings from previous rounds which seems so obvious in a betting game but live and learn 😂

I misunderstood something when I first played Villainous that made it more difficult to win. Took us months to realize and by then we liked it too much to go back (we actually tried playing the "easier"/correct version then and it wasn't nearly as fun so we're sticking with the rule change haha).

One game I think we always play wrong is Happy Little Dinosaurs. I've seen people play it online and it is always slightly different to how we do it in one way or another. It's the order of operations and certain card interactions that are unclear or feel wrong. I still have no idea if we are playing right even after checking the rules over and over again 😂
