  • Catching a conversation with Chief of Department Angelo Sposta and Second Assistant Chief Nick Melillo of the Fire Patrol and Rescue Co. 1 in Port Chester, NY Fire Department. A department with a tremendous history and pride. The Port Chester, NY Fire Department recently celebrated 200 years servicing their community.

So they routinely patrol their area in the engine. That's why it's called a Fire Patrol?? 🤔

The Fire Patrol was funded by the Board of Insurance Underwriters, they would respond to major fires and throw salvage covers over insured property. The term "Fire Patrol" was when the insurance companies would pay to have "Patrolmen" walking around looking for fire to report. FPNY was the last Fire Patrol in the United States in New York City abolished in 2006. Patrolman Keith Roma led over 200 people in the WTC to safety on 9-11-01. It looks like this company in Port Chester combined the Patrol unit, with a Heavy Rescue concept. I hope this answered your question.
