Absolutely, and he’s exactly right. No one cares if you have a couple of 5-0’s when you win the league and it can absolutely be put down as a freak result but this can’t because what’s been shown is that this UTD Team are not anywhere near the standard of teams like Liverpool or City when they play well. Neville’s argument is based on United performances in the last 3 months, and says that’s enough to judge a team on…but he’ll gladly say Arsenal won’t win the league having been at the top of the table for nearly 100% of the season (much more than 3 months). As someone who is into data analysis and observes xG closely, Neville is right. Liverpool did overperform and the result was more flattering than it should have been. Not taking anything away from Liverpool they played well and were deserved winners and if they played 10 times over I'm sure Liverpool would even win the majority of those games, but they won't repeat the same scoreline. In the analysis game, we call that "falling on the other side of variance", or as Neville puts it quite harshly lol, "a freak". But he isn't wrong. Liverpool were very clinical and efficient on the night bagging 7 of only 8 shots taken yet, their total xG was only around 2.8 to MU's 0.8. So, 3-1 would have been a fairer score and perhaps what the score really should've been. If they played the game out again and again this would be the most frequent score, meaning 7-0 is an absolute anomaly (sorry Liverpool fans, enjoy the result anyway!)
We can observe this when we see how unlikely the goals liverpool scored are and why they had such a low xG. Gakpo and firminho scored from tough angles, nunez with a header and salah with his right foot (his weaker foot). If those attempts were taken again they rarely go in! But as is such in football variance can be harsh and it just so happens all attempts fell on the other side of variance on the night for Liverpool and they bagged a huge win!

Ironic that Souness, backed up by the bias in the studio, said it wasn't a freak result, and yet at 2:34 there's a graphic showing just how rare that result is. I don't support either team, but Gary is right, it is a complete freak result. The problem is that the Liverpool pundits got triggered that phrase, and misunderstood the point Gary was trying to make: that it's incredibly rare to get a 7-0 either way in that fixture, and that Man Utd basically gave up after 4 goals. Pretty unprofessional punditry from the Liverpool side, who were too busy gloating and talking over Neville to grasp his point.

To be fair I get what Neville is saying. I also think that this was more of a case of Utd falling apart and everything falling Liverpool's way than Liverpool playing amazing football and I say that as a Liverpool fan. The fact that they scored 7 from an xG of 2.92 is more evidence of that.

As a United fan, the only game that reminded me of was when we beat Arsenal 8-2 back in 2011. Liverpool scored from virtually every chance they created in the same way we did that day. Make no mistake, Liverpool produced some excellent attacking play yesterday, but it takes two to tango and United weren't up to it.
Difference was the United team that won 8-2 was actually very good team, this liverpool team is battling for Europe right now
