You’ve inspired me to buy this for my birthday. I’ve seen this video a good few times. Your passion and love for Zappa is so clearly evident in how you describe everything. In fact, your early Zappa CD discography videos from years before are what mainly inspired me to check out Zappa’s work. Thank you for your awesome videos. I love these long discussions.

Amazing video! Only half way through and I've learned a ton already. I've only listened to this release digitally and love every show included in it. I love this line up and this release exceeded my expectations tenfold. Also I didn't know about the LP only tracks and mixed, hopefully I'll be able to track it down eventually.

Just seen your review-video. It's five star - as usual. Appreciated the inserts and the generous length.
The cd-box looks perfect. The audio content...I'm at "Philly '76" going chronologically, round two, so I have no illusions about what to expect.
I'd say FZ is the James Joyce of music: all style and no content.

I see similarities between Zappa and Pynchon. Pynchon even quoted Zappa in his introduction to “Slow Learner.” I wonder if Zappa read Joyce.

The only detail you neglected to mention is that one of Fillmore East versions of Shove It Right In previously appeared on You Can’t Do That On Stage Anymore Volume 6. Hopefully one day the complete Pauley Pavilion concert will be officially issued.

Great review of the entire massive release! I've only done one video on the Rainbow show, I'm still listening to the Fillmore material, first on the CD set - it is so much material! I'm ecstatic over the King Kongs, plus I love hearing the evolution of Billy the Mountain. I'm actually looking forward to hearing the Ono material as well after hearing both you and Shaggy describe it. When I finally get around to my own review, I will post links to both of your videos. Oh, and I loved the background on the singles! I got excited about the State Farm Theater show being on this set because I thought I had that bootleg, which totally sucked. But the bootleg I have is from 1974. Drat. I had my hopes up.
With these "50th Anniversary" releases, do you think we'll get a remastered and extended version of Waka Jawaka and The Grand Wazoo? Perhaps with additional material from the Petit Wazoo tours, such as was released on Imaginary Diseases? That would be awesome!

What I really like about FZ are the super cool album covers. Been fascinated by them since first hearing FZ in 1983.
The Cal Schenkel-FZ collaboration generated art-work so fantastic it made me want to hear the music.
All posthumous FZ-releases seem to be in black, white and red.

I agree with the comparison between the Roxy and Fillmore boxes. We get to hear a glimpse of the creative mind at work. I believe that the Fillmore building in NYC is now a bank. I have the 1971 box and the two related three LP sets. I'm just waiting for the right set of days off to dive into them.
Stay safe and healthy everyone and listen to some (Zappa) music.

I recently watched the TH-cam video of the Rainbow concert from Zappa Vednik. The first time I've heard the concert properly. The sound quality is a bit dodgy in places and it stops 1 hr and 15 minutes in right in the middle of the guitar solo on King Kong. But it was good enough and you can check it out if anyone is interested.

A few statistics you could have used, talking about the box set:
These Fillmore shows are not just unedited (so far as we can tell) but also overdub-free - quite unlike the original album!
Fillmore East Show One has the least amount of previously released material - only Billy The Mountain, because bits of all four Fillmore versions of Billy...were used in the composite-edit Playground Psychotics version
Fillmore East Show Three has a lot of bits previously released - it's not only the source of the Shove It... on Stage Volume 6, it also has the same version of the Status/Moon/M&D medley which was used on Playground Psychotics.
The 1971 album compiled the basic tracks for its Groupie Opera from both the performances in the box, but was somewhat biased towards the 5/6/71 version.
Half the actual musical material on Disc One of Playground Psychotics is sourced from the Rainbow Theatre gig.
It's always worth mentioning that another result of the attack on Frank in London is that he was managing constant back pain for the rest of his life. (Actually that's partly his fault for being too eager to get back to work and so not letting the doctors reset the bones in his broken leg).
COMMENT 2: If there's a minor problem with the box it's the fact that they missed the fact that they were almost - but not quite (!) - making Playground Psychotics redundant. A ninth disc compiling together PP's audio documentary sections (and Don't Eat There and Diptheria Blues) would have been helpful. For now, we have to do it ourselves...like this: th-cam.com/play/PL788ku0w42h3PW3HSYmTlgO1AX9A2Snqg.html

My favorite period of Frank Zappa’s career is the early Mothers of Invention.
My second favorite period is the Flo and Eddie Mothers.
Because it sounds the closest to the early Mothers, but more rock.
I think vocally Flo and Eddie, resemble the early mothers more than any Zappa band,
Though the band on “Bongo Fury” gets pretty close.

    Bill,
What can I say about this elixir?
First off... When did you go STEREO? ...Excellent !
This is one of your best in the Zappa series of videos. Your assessment of this enormous box set is outstanding. I know that anyone just getting into Zappa, as well as many long time listeners, must be dizzy with all of the pieces to the puzzle that makeup The Mothers 1971, but since Frank was the tape edit king (as mentioned by Joe Travers in the latest Zappacast) as well as king of tossing his recordings into the wind of many releases this boxset release needed to be explained in order to appreciate the density and breath of it.
At this point I want to say that you explain Frank's music in such a user-friendly manner that I'm really surprised that Ahmet & Joe Travers haven't contacted you to be the "Zappa Storytellers". Frank's catalogue is not the easiest for most to wrap one's head around, especially with so many different variations to bands, writing & performing styles, genres of music ...etc., but your approach to explain his story really opens the door in an inviting manner to those who have even a passing interest in Frank's musical legacy.
I also want to tell you that your growing appreciation of Yoko Ono is noteworthy. I know that Yoko isn't the easiest person to listen to but she truly needs to be separated from The Beatles history, as nothing more than John's "main squeeze", and looked upon as one of the innovators of performance art. That's what grabbed John's attention in the first place and wound up expanding his vision as artist. Many would deny there own musical education but how many of us got our first taste of a "sound collage" from John & Yoko's Revolution #9 just as many of us got our first taste of music concrete from Frank? So applauded your comments on Yoko.
As far as the fact that many seem to disregard Mark Volman & Howard Kaylan involvement in the history of The Mothers is a shame. Not only did Flo & Eddie provide some of the most pyrotechnical vocals of any of the lead vocalist of any version of The Mothers but their prowess of being able to "riff" comic storylines which "in this reporter's opinion" really should have resulted in co-writing credits with Frank is unbeatable in the canon of Frank's interest in injecting humor into his musical dialogue. I hope that many will reconsider Mark & Howie's importance in Frank's growth in his color palette.
Anyway .... Thanks Bill for another outstanding videos !!!

The UK crowd was all cool with it until the end. Flo and Eddie went too far, butchering a Beatles classic. Frank was lucky to survive that.
