I solved this issue today and now I am snapping pics like I did back in the 70's! All I had to do was jump in my DeLorean that Doc Brown gave me. I set my time machine for 1985 I drove the DeLorean to the K Mart store and bought a whole cart full of film cartridges that just happen to be on a Blue Light Special! How did I get so lucky? 1985 was the year they stopped production of the film due to the loss in court to Polaroid. So Kmart was practically giving the stuff away. So glad I still have my Colorburst from all those years ago.
I did it!!! I had three pretty successful exposures and then a few Tv staticky type ones mixed in as well, looking forward to kicking around with this in daylight! This is on an EK4, as well! So so so cool. Thank you for making this!!
Sean G unfortunately I’m not sure, but my guesses are that because the 800iso Instax film is so light sensitive that any breach in the transfer process can corrupt it, but then also I think sometimes in the tray it can be not the perfect distance from the lens itself if that makes sense. I seriously hope some of yours come out!! Keep trying and if u buy film in store at like Best Buy etc you can price match B&H and save some $$!
i recently aquiered a HANDLE kodak film camera and with some research realized there was no point lol. i'm on the hunt right now for a cartridge, but i'm glad that once i find that i'll be able to use it, so thank you
my gf is going to college so she gave me her camera collection, and she has a kodamatic 960 and a colorburst 250. I'm really excited to attempt to shoot on them, will keep you posted.
Hi there! I have the Kodak Colorburst 50 and I just gave your method a go, I bought the camera at a thrift store and just had to order a new battery for it so I was able to try it out for the first time today! There was the old Kodak film in the cartridge already so I said what the heck and snapped photos to get rid of the film that was in the cartridge already, obviously none of the pictures developed correctly but it was worth a shot. Anyways, I bought all the materials you mentioned in your video except I bought the instax mini film in ‘’mono chrome” because the retailer had no more regular ones left. When I load the film into my the cartridge using the plastic file folder template, the picture comes out of the roller just fine however, nothing really develops & there was this black gooey residue on the back of the film towards the pod area but that residue did not come out when I had taken photos with the original Kodak film that was already in the cartridge. Do you think it’s because the instax film I bought is the mono chrome type or do you know what that could be from? The camera seems to work fine and there is no residue inside the cartridge or anywhere else aside from very little spots on the roller. I would love to use your method for my camera but just want to figure out if maybe I’m doing something wrong on my end! Thank you very much!
My Dad just gave me an EK6 thinking it could be worth something in a vintage sense. I'm not disappointed that its basically worthless, but saddened that he hung on to it and assumed it was valuable this whole time. I will keep it as an heirloom. Kind of want to use it but I don't know anything about these old cameras and based on this video, more complicated than I'm willing to invest in.
I just bought a Kodak Colorburst 50 still in the box, the batteries were easy to find and I have tonnes of instax film for my mini 8, can't wait to try this.
This is amazing. I have at least 2 of these old Kodaks sitting in the garage. I did buy a pack of film off Ebay last year but surprisingly it was dead so I'm thinking I will give it a go.
Why would you be surprised that a 35-40 year old film cartridge doesn't work? Film has had an expiration date, forever, regardless of the format. The chemical emulsion on the film breaks down, as it ages. You should never buy ancient camera film, as it's going to be a waste of money. It's better to spend the money to buy a new camera, that is still supported.
did you remove the instax film from its cartridge in a dark room? i'm just not sure how the film did not get ruined. i want to try this out but don't want to waste film :)
Hi I just saw this , I came home tonight and my boyfriend surprised me with a working kodakmatic Pleaser 2 camera ( the owner rarely used it, even came with manual and original battery). Since film is impossible to find, will the Fuji instax mini or wide work on this? Thanks so much
I have the EK160 (colorburst 250 in the US, released July 1979 ) and it will be great to actually take some pictures with it. Perhaps you can figure out how to put some sort of slippery sheet between each unexposed sheet so it slides rather than stick together
I have Kodak ek6 with automatic ejector buts it’s not ejecting any tips also when putting in film does room need to be completely dark since I don’t have a changing bag
Caitlin No way! I have a 100 and it was my grandma’s, too! Did you ever end up trying it with the square? I’m going to go try and find a battery and try out the Instax Mini film.
This is awesome! Everything I had read told me that my colorburst 300 was a doorstop. I do have a question. Do you know if there is a way to "reset" a camera. I got a new battery for it and after working for 3 shots then getting jammed the motor won't stop running unless I hold down the shutter button.
Thank you so much! I have a Kodak but I didn’t want to buy a 135 dollar film for it because welll that’s just a lot of money lol, anyways this is really helpful! I’m gonna try it thanks!
Thank you for tinkering with film for this camera! Recently inherited a colorburst and really excited to use it :) I'm still very new to photography, so I had a question about the changing bag: What does it do for this film? I see you can develop in it from what google says, but unsure of what exactly is being done here. Thank you, again!!!
What type of film does it originally take? I have a Colorburst 100, and it takes PR-10. Would this still work? Also, now that Fujifilm has released wide film, does it work? And, was the battery easy to pull out for you, at first? It's really hard, on my camera.
hey! thanks for the great tutorial! since I haven't yet bought instax mini film I wanted to ask you a couple of questions about the whole loading up the EK4: from what I found out, the instax film comes within a cartridge. So to get the film out of it aren't you already exposing it? Like the film you show in the video - is it just a test film or what is it that you do inside the changing bag? Thank you!
Yes, you are correct. The film that I am using in the video is test film. If you want to be able to take pictures, then the unexposed film has to be loaded in complete darkness -- either a changing bag or a darkroom.
I wonder if this would work on the high end Kodak EK8? Not sure if that particular model has the lighten/darken function to help with the different speed of instax film.
This is awesome! I've been looking to buy an old Colorburst 50 like I had when I was a kid, I would be interested to see if this technique would work with that. Meanwhile I'll look for some other types of old Kodak Instant cameras.
Cool. Going through some storage I found my old Kodak Colorburst 100 camera. Fortunately, there was an empty cartridge in it. The battery was stuck and I had to carefully pry it out, but it looks good inside. Ordering a battery to see if it comes to life OK and the motor works. If so, I will give this a try. Just not sure how you are getting the film into the cartridge, I guess I'll figure it out. Interesting.
Thank you for this tutorial! Is so cool! I will buy this camera and try it! Just one (maybe stupid) question: the camera works also without battery? Isn't it all "mechanical"? The battery is only for the exposure signal on the viewfinder? Thank you very much. Cheers from italy :)
So sorry if I missed the explanation but couldn't quite get through all that. Did I understand you to say that the square format of the instax film will work without all this dark magic?
Hi! I have the same camera and I went through the same things with it :( by any chance do you still have the .obj or .stl digital archive for the 3D print? It would be really helpfull! Thanks.
Thank you so much for sharing. I'm trying this on the Pleaser and the EK6.. so far couldn't get it to work :/ Thinking it might be an issue with pre-exposing the film.. also the roller seems to be pushing down too tight on the film and squishing the ink.
hi guy i have a Polaroid vision 95 , this method can be used in this type of polaroid?? I asking cause I won't by expired film . impossibile didn't produce sonething Polaroid film 500
To be honest I completely forgot about those cameras until you mentioned it, so I don't know, but that is a very good question. I might have to look into it.
I actually just held one of those cameras today, and yes it probably would as long as the rollers could grip the edge of the instax film, which it probably could do easily.
I have an EK2 and after watching this and your 2nd video I decided to make these. I've only done dry-runs so far but the film keeps jamming and coming out all at once? also, why did you put the square piece of tape on the corner?
It's worth a try. In the Polaroid, the photosensitive surface is aimed upwards at the mirror and lens. It seems to me that since Instax exposes through the back, just put that side up. If I can find my way back here, I will post my results.
I'm slightly disappointed. Probably cause my camera is broken from the beginning perhaps? I have a Kodak EK-100, put the instax-film in like you've shown - in a dark room. The pictures gets weird, either blue or red fuzz. Can't tell what it is in the pictures even. Any idea what the problem might be?
Frinalebi Shows My camera is a Kodak Colorburst 100, and I found expired PR-10 film on eBay- so I’m sure you can find some online! :) It doesn’t matter if the film is expired (still try it, anyway, don’t chuck the film out if it’s unexposed), because you just need the cartridge for this method.
how did you get the new film out of the instax box and HOW did you put everything together in the dark?! also do you just put the black paper sheet "adapter" on top of the old cartridge? doesn't it fall off? Where do you keep the new unused instax film after opening the cartridge? thanks for a great video! hope my kodak EK160 works!
If only I had an empty cartridge :,( would an empty cartridge from a 600 polaroid camera work…? I assume not the sizes are probably different but I don’t know for sure
I have a colorburst 350 as well and wondered if it would work the same for mine???? Anyone know if it will or if any other films could be altered??? Thanks in advance
Unfortunately also in the model whit the crank the battery is used to open and close shutter and to make work the photocell;no battery no photos;not are manual cameras like Polaroid 180 that work totally whit no battery like old 110 b pathfinder roll film cameras
I've got a colorburst 250 but haven't got the cartridge that would hold the film (I assume when it was done you through it away and replaced it with a new one but the new ones don't work. Any ideas where I can get one and/or whether I can actually get this camera working? Also would getting Polaroid film work at all like this?
Hey, I recently got a 1982 930 Kodamatic Instant Camera... I know they don’t sell their films anymore because of their incident back a in the 80’s but what would I be able to do about that... the same here??
What kind of folder texture did you use. The one I got was matte and it looks like the plastic used is glossy but I'm not sure as I'm trying to find out how to get mine to get good pictures to work
Hey man I just found a Kodak Colorburst 250 but realized there is no cartridge inside. I cant seem to find a replacement online. Is there any solution you could think of for this problem
I thought when you took film out of the pack then its exposed to light and is ruined so I'm just confused on how you took the picture with that film if it was exposed to light when you were taking the video or did you change the film out and put a new one in in your changing bag?
Hi, I tried this with my Ek160-EF kodak camera. I have the cartridge, but the photo output is automatic, not with a lever like on your model and I think it does not have enough strength. I tried it without the cartridge and I get the photo to come out, but it does not reveal at all, any ideas? how can I know if I veiled the photos when i opened the mini instax package? The photograph remains white but with lines and some colored dots ... but no what i supposed to photographed. May be the camera has any problem making the photo? The sounds making the photo seems to be good, and the flash works! What can I do? thanks!
Hi, I found a Kodak EK160 EF in my grandfather's house. it's unopened, still in the box, but i don't have the films. Do you know where can I buy a film similiar to the one for that camera? Or some trick to make it work. I'm from argentina, sorry for my bad english. I hope you reply me.
I bought one of these cameras off of Savers. Its a Kodak Colorburst 250. The thing is that I don't have an empty cartridge to attempt this with do you know where I could get one or what the name of the old film cartridges were so i can atleast buy an expired pack of ebay?
I tried this with a 940 kodamatic instand camera, and it's using the film. However, it's like the image isn't developing at all or it seems over exposed. I've tried each exposure settings, but I feel like I'm just wasting film. It rolls out automatically with no trouble at all, but nothing is developing. How can I fix this?????
It's a "J Type" battery, I guess it's used in some medical devices. You can get them on Amazon for about $5: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0112D3MGM/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 www.amazon.com/Duracell-7K67BPK-Home-Medical-Battery/dp/B00009V2QU/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1486734749&sr=8-1&keywords=Type+j+battery
The Polaroid pictures were BETTER than the Polaroids! I can’t believe Polaroid won the lawsuit they were so different from 1 another besides the basic concept! I can’t wait to try this! Will it be like the Kodak pics though? The imprint style? Or will it be like a Polaroid with the flimsy section as the picture inside the white edge?
Hi, I do exactly the same with instax film, but not working properly at my kodak EK6. I think everythig work properly, I insert film in dark room, then take a picture and the film came out with no problems, but then on the film is nothing (none picture) it's all white...and I notice that on the film when come out (at negative side) at the up edge, and the bottom edge is some kinda drop or peak of greased ink or chemical from film. My kodak has automatic system to eject out the film, is maybe this a problem, or a roller problems? maybe too much squize the film on the way out? Can you please help me or suggest something. you can contact me, thank you
"this is Fuji film in Kodak cameras... this is the dark side of photography, this is awesome"

empty kodak cartridges are almost as rare as the film itself
My cartridge still had 3 shots in it lmao
My grandfather passed away and I inherited his old cameras and I almost cried when I opened it and there was an empty cartridge in it lol
I recently bought a camera and it had an empty cartridge in it! I had no idea how lucky I was until I started researching it all!!!
have you tried this again with Instax square films?
I have an EK6. Just got it and was disappointed I couldn't find film for it. This video was informative and I will be putting this to use!
No one wants these cameras but I’ve been hunting one down since August before I knew you could do this. I want one just for the legend of the lawsuit.

Same thing with me
I'm so excited to try this! I knew there was a reason I bought that old kodak for $3 hahaha. I'm going to search my desk for some plastic now.
My Dad just gave me an EK6 thinking it could be worth something in a vintage sense. I'm not disappointed that its basically worthless, but saddened that he hung on to it and assumed it was valuable this whole time. I will keep it as an heirloom. Polaroid sued Kodak, yet those Kodak pics looked better than plain-ass polaroids...and they knew it, too! Kodak had them shook! 😅
did you remove the instax film from its cartridge in a dark room? i'm just not sure how the film did not get ruined. i want to try this out but don't want to waste film :)
did you figure it out? im on that step still.... practicing with my eyes closed haha
Yes your film needs complete darkness until it goes through the rollers.
Big Al so to take out the film with out ruining it, it just needs to be completely dark?
@@clairebear5450 yes
Retro AP what?!? Why didn’t I know that 🥺😭😭 I feel kinda dumb

Wide won't fit, but mini will. Just follow the instructions in this video. (and I've got an update video coming soon-ish)
Please let me know if you manage to make an adapter foe the Instax square to shoot more than 1 image? I would like to buy one
you can also use the wide stuff, just got to make some mods to the camera..
Ha!
Tutorial?? ;)
Found mine down the local dump film still in it during the eighties. Will give this a go!! Colourburst 100 cant wait
how are you able to get the instax film on it's own, undeveloped without exposing it with the light?
Very clever, I did one. I like your line of thought
Damn this is cool. Would this work with a Kodak Colorburst 50?
Yes, it should.

hey! thanks for the great tutorial! since I haven't yet bought instax mini film I wanted to ask you a couple of questions about the whole loading up the EK4: from what I found out, the instax film comes within a cartridge. No because Instax exposes from the back. Polaroids need mirrors.
It's worth a try. In the Polaroid, the photosensitive surface is aimed upwards at the mirror and lens. It seems to me that since Instax exposes through the back, just put that side up. If I can find my way back here, I will post my results.

Have you had a change to use it with other Kodiak cameras?
Yes, a few.
What if you don’t have the old cartridge? Could you put something else in that spot?
Will this work on the Kodak colorburst 250 as well, even with an automatic feed on the film?
I have Kodak colorburst 350
I have a colorburst 350 as well and wondered if it would work the same for mine???? Anyone know if it will or if any other films could be altered??? Thanks in advance
have you ever tried putting in multiple photos in to the cartridge?
Unfortunately also in the model whit the crank the battery is used to open and close shutter and to make work the photocell;no battery no photos;not are manual cameras like Polaroid 180 that work totally whit no battery like old 110 b pathfinder roll film cameras
I've got a colorburst 250 but haven't got the cartridge that would hold the film (I assume when it was done you through it away and replaced it with a new one but the new ones don't work. Any ideas where I can get one and/or whether I can actually get this camera working? Also would getting Polaroid film work at all like this?
This might be late comment but, have you tried using an instax wide on this?
I believe Instax wide is just a little too wide to fit in the cartridge. The upcoming Instax Square should fit fine though!
Thanks, I hope they would not make the instax square too expensive. I actually got an Instax Mini 8 just to feel if instant film fits me.
Reynaldo, instant film is just one of those extravagances of life!
Will this work with the colorburst?
Hi so i have a Polaroid Spectra AF that my mom gave me. Film is $20+ for like 8. Can i use this technique with that camera as well??
Give it a go. I will be putting the back side up, since that is where the film is photosensitive
Now, make this for something like RZ67 polaroid back! :D
Hey, I recently got a 1982 930 Kodamatic Instant Camera... I know they don’t sell their films anymore because of their incident back a in the 80’s but what would I be able to do about that... the same here??
I have film for sale!!!
I thought when you took film out of the pack then its exposed to light and is ruined so I'm just confused on how you took the picture with that film if it was exposed to light when you were taking the video or did you change the film out and put a new one in in your changing bag?
what if i don't have the filmbox of Kodak?can i use something instead, for example, the filmbox of fuji ace?
do you need a battery if you just need to roll out the film?
Hi, I tried this with my Ek160-EF kodak camera. I have the cartridge, but the photo output is automatic, not with a lever like on your model and I think it does not have enough strength.
I tried it without the cartridge and I get the photo to come out, but it does not reveal at all, any ideas? how can I know if I veiled the photos when i opened the mini instax package? The photograph remains white but with lines and some colored dots ... but no what i supposed to photographed. May be the camera has any problem making the photo? The sounds making the photo seems to be good, and the flash works! What can I do? thanks!
I have trimatic kodak film hmu if you want to purchase
Hi, I found a Kodak EK160 EF in my grandfather's house. it's unopened, still in the box, but i don't have the films. Do you know where can I buy a film similiar to the one for that camera? Or some trick to make it work. I'm from argentina, sorry for my bad english. I hope you reply me.
Orne lla I'd like an answer for this one too!!!
How can I fix this?????
when you took the instax from their pacage did u do that in the dark ? or simply you can take the pellicola and exspose it under the light ?
I am wondering if this is what the changing bag was used for since it was exposed... I'm new to photographry so I'm unsure hehe but maybe??
Can you give more information about the battery?
It's a "J Type" battery, I guess it's used in some medical devices. You can get them on Amazon for about $5:

The Polaroid pictures were BETTER than the Polaroids! I can’t believe Polaroid won the lawsuit they were so different from 1 another besides the basic concept! I can’t wait to try this! Will it be like the Kodak pics though? The imprint style? Or will it be like a Polaroid with the flimsy section as the picture inside the white edge?
Its been 7 years has there been a update?
I am going to try this with my old Polaroid 600!
Can you please help me or suggest something. you can contact me, thank you
I bought the Kodak EK6 for 3 bucks at the thrift store. I just thought it was a cool vintage piece. It doesn't work but it looks cool.
How did you insert it ? And what do you mean by exposure?
