    Soooo glad you shared the difference between shell out beans and dry storage beans. I for YEARS didn’t understand what was meant by it. It was how far you let them get on the vine that confused me. Everyone just said, “let them beans dry on the vine but not too dry.” Never explaining the “pod” was what you’re looking at first with shell outs not the actual “bean.” The yellowing not the brown dry pod. This is awesome information Charles. Also another reason why I ALWAYS, and I mean every time, check to see if you’ve got a video on anything I do that’s new to me. And honestly you’ve had something every single time! You, my dear sweet friend are an absolute blessing! Love, hugs and blessings to you and the Mrs. always~ Lisa

    I'm sitting here planning my 2020 garden. I asked my husband if he knew anything about how kidney beans grow. He had no more idea than I did lol. Thank you for showing how simple it is to grow and can kidney beans!

      Hello Beverly and welcome to my videos. As you see in my video, you don't have to wait until the beans are dry. I like them when they are at the "shell out" stage. Pinto beans are also just as easy to grow and can, watch my video on growing pinto beans at: th-cam.com/video/cvpqrrcRdr0/w-d-xo.html

      HEY! You are the one that "ROCKS", just for watching my videos. Later as the weather begins to cool off I will plant my fall garden and then as it comes on I'll can some of it. I like to make *** Start to finish*** videos so you can see the whole process. But of course it takes weeks from the time I plant the seeds to the time when I am canning or cooking the vegetable.

    Charles well done using Rabbit poop . I used rabbit poop to grow the best melons and tomatoes that I every grew . Now I use Bio digested fish, kelp and comfrey . I put it on everything .Throw all three in a garbage can and leave it for 1 year .Add lots of water . Just before spring I give every thing a cup or two and other food forest nothing . What a different out come of food production . This year I have a over whelming amount of food . Every tree is loaded and the food bank is happy to get the over abundance . The food forest with out the Bio digested fish , kelp , and comfrey did half the production . Love seeing your videos OAG . Take Care Howie

    Morning OAG, thanks for the tip on the Poop Soup! I remember back when we raised rabbits on the farm for meat to sale, we would save all the poop and compost it. We used it to side dress our plantings in the gardens. Now that I am retired, I will be getting rabbits again this spring. If you know a good place to get some rabbits to start with let me know. Thanks for the video, You'all take care, stay safe and God Bless You and Yours.

    Great video...I'm in east Texas but never tried raising kidney beans,but I love them a lot..so after watching this think I'll try next year. I've seen people take the rings off after cooling the jars,but never knew why,is there a reason or is it to reuse to can more jars? I've canned over the years,but not a ton..mostly pears 😁🍐🍐🍐..thanks OAG for a very helpful video👍

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello RWC: Yes, there is a reason for removing the rings after the jars cool and it is: If the ring remains on and the contents spoil (for whatever reason) the bad bacteria caused by the spoiled content will build up pressure and the jar will break spilling the contents out and making a mess in your storage area. If the ring is off, then the only thing that will happen is the lid will pop off and the jar will not break, which means of course no mess to clean up. And of course I do wash the rings and reuse them to can more jars. Thanks for stopping by.

    Thank you for making this video. I know it sounds dumb but I’ve always been wary of cooking my own kidney bean (dried) because I read that if you don’t boil them long enough they can make you sick. I never thought to can them. I’m going to do this!

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello Rebecca. I have cooked kidney beans almost all my life and I had never heard that uncooked beans could make me sick. And as far as I know I have never gotten sick from eating kidney beans. I usually cook my kidney beans in chili or soup so it does get a longer cooking time. Plus canning will cook them to the well done point. Thanks for watching my videos.

      I believe that I read that boiling them for 10 minutes gets rid of the toxin. :) I think you have to boil them longer than that to get them soft enough to eat. :P

    My whole family loves kidney beans! Thanks so much, you have taught me well. My uncle Walt used to sing that diddy. We are moving and I wish to have a garden next year. I will keep watching and I will stay subscribed to your channel💜. You're knowledge is invaluable my friend. Hmmm, perhaps we should get our kids a rabbit!?

    I love kidney beans Mr. Charles, those look great. Never considered growing them. As soon as I have the space set up I'm giving these a try.
    Trying baby limas this year and I need to learn how to can those. These are basically dry when picked, should I be picking them sooner in order to can them? We can pintos from dried beans, would the dried lima beans be done the same way?

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello TMW. All DRY beans (baby lima, kidney beans, pinto beans, butter beans) will be canned the same (the long process). All SHELL OUT beans (baby lima, kidney beans, pinto beans, butter beans) will be canned (the short process) as you see in this video. You don't want to mix shell out and dry beans in the same canning process. SNAP beans, such as fresh green beans will be canned the short process.

    I experimented with pinto & black beans. The results were fair. Do kidney beans require a lot of water? I live in Southwest Kansas & it’s very hot & dry here in the summers

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kidney beans, at least the ones I grow, are a bush bean and therefore seem to require less water.

      Hello and welcome to my videos. in this video, the kidney beans are heated only to get them hot, not cooked, the cooking would be during the canning process. I don't really have a time for them to be cooked until ready to eat. My recommendation is to cook them until they are tender. Thank you for watching my videos, please subscribe.

      One comment on the cow manure. be sure the cow didn't eat grass or hay that had been sprayed with herbicides. The herbicides go on through the cow and are in the manure. Herbicides prevent broad leaf plants from growing.

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I add 1/4 teaspoon of salt to each pint jar. You need a little salt to improve the flavor, you can always add more when you open the jar to cook with the beans. Thanks for watching my videos. If you haven't already, please subscribe.
