Europe votes: Housing, living costs worry Irish voters • FRANCE 24 English

  • The Republic of Ireland is considered to be one of the most pro-EU member states, and the Eurobarometer poll that came out this spring bears that out: 67 percent of respondents said that the EU conjures up a positive image. But being pro-European does not necessarily mean supporting the traditional pro-EU parties in Ireland. Indeed, this election campaign has seen increased support for independent candidates. Is that trend related to the big social challenges that Ireland is facing - housing, and the cost of living?

Affordable housing, cost of living is exactly the same in Australia, USA, UK or just about anywhere else in the western world

It's a land use problem, Ireland has a low population density, it's empty. You can get 90% of the comfort of a house for under $3000, a canvas wall tent, diesel heater, solar, gas etc
Get out of people's way and force farmers to give temporary leases on small plots. Screw the scenery, let people have a shag and good night's kip.

Why didn't you have an actual independent candidate instead of 2 establishment party members?

Exactly what I was thinking. They might hear unpalatable truths.

Not at all, a dictatorship forcing an enormous number of foreign immigrants onto the Irish people has caused a huge backlash. Instead of asking us they deceived, intimidated, and insulted the Irish people.
Ireland's main political parties will pay a very heavy price for what they have done to Irish society.

If the housing market was not rigged, house prices would fall rapidly to below the lows of 2012. For 30,000 euro you would able to buy what presently costs 300,000 euro. But it is frustrating waiting for the bubble to pop. I think an old fashioned boycott of renting from REITs could be just the ticket but a crash in house prices could be caused by a lot of other things.
