INAV PID Tuning Analysis & Tutorial - BOB57

  • Hi everyone,
    I absolutely love how the BOB57 quad flies using both the factory well as the the EllisVanJason PID and Rate profiles in Betaflight.
    Unfortunaterly, BTFL has several drawbacks compared to INAV, e.g. useful navigation modes and a reliable RTH function where the quad doesn't just drop out fo the sky.
    To get the BOB57 to fly with INAV, I performed a series of PID tuning flights using the "Basement Tuning Method" and in this video I am showing you the results of extensive tuning to achieve near perfect flight performance.
    I hope you enjoy the video and get to learn something new!
    All the files that have been used in the making of this video are stored on Google drive here:

    I honestly struggled, I love what you said in the beginning, no clue what you were doing trial and error. Your video made this so much clearer than any other video I have seen and watch tons !!
    Although my basement is 1/2 size high, I used the spare bedroom, after breaking the fan and lightbulbs 😂 I came to realize I didn’t know what I was doing either !!! Then realized you can’t tune in angle mode 🫣. Although I was tuning the gps pids , somehow got that workout really good ! Now to tune the main pids, but will probably do that outside. I used your pids for reference, although mine is the axis 7 kolas 7”. I came from betaflight as well. I’ll probably have to watch this video another 2 more times following along with you and hopefully get my main pids down .

    Do you have any suggestions how to tune bigger quads indoor, like 8-10"?
    Is methods and suggestions described here will apply for lot heavier quads?
    Will try to follow it and hope I'll finally will have adequate tune for my setup.

      You can copy the DUMP file safely into INAV 6.1.0 wihout the gyro and accelerometer settings. Just make sure you callibrate your compass after setup and you have your GPS mounted FLAT towards the sky and not at an angle!!! This is very important!

    Thank for sharing your research : it help me a lot with Inav7 Tuning,
    Could you confirm the method to have a good PID tuning :
    1- set I and FF to 0
    2-put a value on P (40) and keep it constant
    3-log a fly for each value of D (from 15 to 30 ie every 5+)
    4- choose with PID Tool the right balance P/D
    5- keep the P/D ratio and multiply it from 0.6 to 1.4
    6- chosse with PID Tool the right P/D
    7-play with I to see the effect on PID Tool (not great for me...)
    I'm at this point on this method and then try to play with FeedForward but not also great effect ...
    What do you think ? what is your method to define the right PIDFF value ?
    I'm not happy with the new Ez-Tune for Inav7 ... or I have no idea how to use it ...I think it is way better with Betaflight slider...

      In essence, yes, that is correct. It is an interative process and you should learn to listent to the motors and props and how they sound when you make sharp and short stick inputs.
      The other thing that I did after this was something that I wanted to make a whole different video about, where I show how to do tuning in flight. This one is all about what you see in the goggles and what you can hear, not so much about graphs and all that. Graphs are usefull to get you close, but they don't represent real flight where you can have disturbances from wind, turbulent airflow etc. because they are made in "ideal environment".
      I'm looking to make that video on the next few months, probably around Christmas, when I'll have a bit more time. This will be specifically about tuning a quad in INAV. It might even be a two part video....

    So all I have to do is push throttle several time to get good data?

    • @DZARO
      @DZARO  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not really, you need to push the trhottle make aggressive movements in acro mode which will have you using the full length of the stick. You need full throttle for filter setup and to check for prop and frame vibrations as well as resonance.

    Man you open my mind on Inav and basement tuning. I'm used at Betaflight, however on Inav I have a lot of questions on how to realize a good tuning , it seems that PIDs are so different from Beta. I usually set I and FF to zero, enable 100% angle strength and use angle mode not acro as you did if I'm not mistaken. I start leaving P to stock and start moving D. But with Inav it seems different, is it possible that stock P on nav is too high ? I'm tuning a a deadcat 7".

    • @DZARO
      @DZARO  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, that is possible. I had a flyaway when I used the Betaflight PIDs in INAV (only the ones that Pawel reccommended). I don't think he is correct in his advice. Every quad is different though. If you have specific PID that you would like to improve, just join my Discord: discord.gg/HkFBVHvz

    • @DZARO
      @DZARO  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@theinventionshow Start with low values for all P, I, and D. Gradually increase P and I until you start seeing oscillations. Then increase D to try and remove those oscillations. Finally, dial down on P and I to get rid of the overshoot hill and that's pretty much it I would say. It's not that hard tbh...

    • @DZARO
      @DZARO  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, well, Pawel advises many things and I don't agree with some of them. Pawel aslo advises different things in different videos, which makes his advice even more confusing and less trustworthy.
      If you try it stock I and FF, on this quad, I guarantee you that you will have a flyaway event and you risk burning your ESC.
      You can trust me on this one, I've tried!
