    From a fan's vantage point, the first show wasn't a train wreck. Geddy's bass cutting out was the only time I've ever seen a malfunction like that. What Neil said about being ahead on The Anarchist and Clockwork Angels, I didn't notice, and I was totally sober watching the show. Beyond Headlong Flight, everything seemed fine. To them a train wreck but the Friday show was flawless according to them and I loved that setlist better than the first show.

    That was killer, loved it. Headlong Flight is very much a favourite, just love it. I really enjoy seeing the fans doing their thing in the stands, this band is so loved. No matter what Neil does and the the rest of the band for that matter, I am just happy that at this stage they could still pull off a great performance. The only thing I will say about glitches and getting older, these guys are performing very complex and complicated songs, stuff happens, it's all about how you handle it. Thanks Justin.

    The big drum solo is on Cygnus X-1. Glad I was not wrong that I KNEW Peart would never leave out the big drum solo. It gets the loudest applause of the night in EVERY live Rush show I have been to. That is over 30 live shows. Neil is carrying the flag for all of us drummers who love to solo live. ha

    I saw them in Denver with my youngest son. They were definitely in good spirits for that. At one point during 2112, Geddy ran across the stage and leaped onto a riser.

    Having the stage hands come out and continually update the stage was very much a fun thing to watch. They'd come out for a bit and turn the stage into another era and then let you soak it in for a song or two before doing it again. What a great idea that was!

    I was sure Geddy's bass cut out and he took it off, held it out straight-armed to Scully and he came running out with another bass. I looked at Alex and Neil and they carried on like they didn't notice or simply put on that professional brave face. I was in the fifth row and had a perfect vantage point for all of this.

    I recall seeing another solo from this tour. Not much longer but longer. Could be getting them mixed up but I do recall seeing it.
    They are tired. Think they all knew it inside that they were close to the end. Their music was pretty complicated and not an easy thing to play. I’m glad we got it but I’m also glad they stopped just when they started going down. They are at the end. It’s sad to see but thanks for the memories.

    There is a big drum solo during Cygnus X-1 The Voyage in the second set. And what an epic second set that was!

  • @elliottsargent5485
    @elliottsargent5485 ปีที่แล้ว

    What reflected their experiences of the previous show to me was their distinct lack of smiles or banter between each other that was so common previously. As you said, their playing is fine, apart from the obvious, but I think it’s their stage presence and how up tight I imagine they were that perhaps is contributing towards what you suggested, at least as far as I can see.

  • @garylagstrom3864
    @garylagstrom3864 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Well it’s like Neil himself said: Can I play Charlie Watts music till I’m 80? Yes! Can I play Neil Peart music at 80??? Absolutely Not! Point is Neil set a standard for himself that can not be emulated by anyone else! Absolutely no drummer matches him note for note in their entire catalog let alone write the lyrics of RUSH. Neil knew it was time to stop and quiet frankly felt that way after the Clockwork Angels tour!

    Wasn’t at the Toronto shows but did see them twice in this tour, and I will say they started fast but got sloppy toward the back half of both shows. I really think it’s an endurance thing. This music is technically and physically demanding. And the bar they’ve set for themselves, it’s not like they could go out there with additional musicians or backup singers (I mean, they could, but neither they nor the audience would be ok with that). I’m glad they did the tour. Glad I got to see them, but I think they made the right call by hanging it up afterward.

    Geddy had no choice but to switch basses during Headlong Flight on the first night. He was given a bass that was not in the correct tuning and had to switch it out with another bass that was tuned correctly. You can find videos of it on TH-cam.

    It’s interesting. I noticed they seemed to be tired at the beginning of the Dallas show, but the energy picked up as the show progressed. The DVD seemed to reflect that, too, at least for me. It’s like they got younger as the night went on lol

      They’re acting their age at each stage to reflect the Time Travel aspect of the show. Didn’t you see Alex with the walker silhouette at the start of the show? It’s PERFORMANCE ART 🐾

    Yeah, if you recall, I was one of the few suggesting that you don’t check out R40. I didn’t want this journey to end on a sour note for you. I saw them in Detroit and I had mentioned way back then that that was the only time I saw them that they seem tired. Don’t get me wrong, I missed the clockwork Angels tour, and I was glad that I was able to see them one last time. Also, seeing them starting the change the stage brings me back to the behind the scenes videos you reacted to. The show must have been incredibly hard for the crew to pull off.

    Yeah, I've always felt the same way about this performance, so it was interesting to hear you say the same. And this song has never been one of my favorites (to each, his own). Loved that they put a short solo in there, though. Cross-between By-Tor and Wipeout. As Chris said, there is another solo on the repro kit. Neil wasn't thrilled about soloing (or playing at all) on that setup.

    And very happy I did, it was a grand conclusion to decades of happy experiences. It's odd to see Neil without the back kit.
    Also, It's really embarrassing when they repo your gear during the set.

    @chriskangeter8993 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also, Neil did his "trick" with the stick flip off the drum early in this song. For whoever it was that was asking me about it the other day.

  • @martin.l8007
    @martin.l8007 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    No, no, it's actually exaggerated. I know someone - a major Rush fan he saw them over 300 times. Geddys bass just cut out on him, and he got a new one back. They were little out-of-sync it wasn't a complete train wreck. You have to remember the band puts a lot of pressure on themselves. And of course, you have to remember that Neil is a perfectionist. If it's not 110%, then it's awful.

    Yeah, again, I like Neil's choice of going short and more within the song on his solo. Geddy hit that long "again" pretty well, too (both times, especially the first). That's all I'll say about his overall vocals here, though. And a trainwreck to Rush is a minor derailment to most of us.

  • @toddc28
    @toddc28 ปีที่แล้ว

    Regarding them not being themselves during this tour I’m guessing it’s the pressure knowing this would be their last tour. And it was really a mini tour. Neil probably made it very clear to Ged and Alex that this was his very last tour. Probably was not happy to even be there. Who can blame him. And that probably affected Alex and Geddy. Neil was probably thinking “I can’t wait for this to be over so I can truly retire”. I think he wanted to end it after the CA tour. Alex and Geddy probably thinking “this is so sad and unfair that we’re done as a band after a handful more of shows”

  • @shabadoo25
    @shabadoo25 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think a few dynamics were in play. As they aged, the "no opening act" structure got tougher and tougher. The opening set got shorter. The skit videos got longer. Second, R40 was kind of thrown together faster than prior tours with less rest from the prior one than normal. They were fighting Father Time and Neil's desires on this one.

    1. There actually is another drum solo, and I once read an article on how Neil put it together - trying to follow the same theme of going backwards in time and chronicle the history of his solos. I still don't fully get it but a couple of drummer friends think it was brilliant.
    2. Rush could have a bad gig in the eyes of the three players (especially Neil, who was a notorious perfectionist), but the vast majority of the audience would barely notice it. I would go as far as to say it would take a professional musician (such as yourself) to even notice most of it.

    Woe to those who convinced J to react to R40. Well, woe to Rush for convincing themselves to do R40 ; ) Its just not a great send off to the whole career imho. Too much of it happening was based on pressures and fantasies that flew in the face of what it takes for professional execution, keeping with the standard they had set over those 40 years.
    Back in 2015 I kicked myself for not going to their Irvine show, but now watching this its a bit depressing

    Hey Justin, I really don't understand how you came to the conclusion that the mishaps of the first night and their uncertainty they felt the second night for the recording have anything to do with their age? You read it yourself and it was very clear that there was an issue with the keyboard system which was throwing everything off, and then "one of the backstage geniuses finally switched over to the backup keyboard system and suddenly everything was fine." Of course this really messed with their heads and that's not the type of thing anyone could just get over, and then the next night going back out on the same stage and this time filming for a DVD really had to have them on edge. I would not expect any artist regardless of age to perform at their best under those conditions. But again my point is, this was all clearly due to an extremely bad technical issue that shook them up for a couple nights but had absolutely nothing to do with their age or their ability to perform under normal circumstances. How you turned this into an issue with their age is beyond me!

    • @JustinPanariello
      @JustinPanariello  ปีที่แล้ว

      Regardless of the mishap... this gig, in my opinion, definitely showed their age. They just weren't sharp. And maybe it's just an off night, that can happen at any age... but idk. Feels different this time around.

    • @markandersen5187
      @markandersen5187 ปีที่แล้ว

      @JustinPanariello I am reading that you think because of their age they are not sharp? Yet you stated that you've played with people older than Rush and age isn't a factor " it shouldn't be that way" you said...don't see your logic that this(whatever "this" is) is age related...I think the energy is there in this song and through this show...they seemed pretty focused on a great performance after what happened the show before...the pressure of rebounding with a great show being filmed in their hometown may be what you're feeling...seem sharp to me✌️

    • @JustinPanariello
      @JustinPanariello  ปีที่แล้ว

      i am not saying that because of their age they are not sharp. I'm saying, there were points throughout this show that they were not sharp. And that perhaps it's their age showing. Again, maybe it's just an off night which can happen at any age. But it just feels different this time around. Also i'm not saying that all of the show was bad, .. i don't want to get ahead of myself, or where we are in the video releases...

    • @mikeb57469
      @mikeb57469 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JustinPanariello I would think after what you read about the previous show, you wouldn't even question why they are not on top of their game on all the songs for this concert, it should be clear that it has nothing to do with their age. And two things to keep in mind about Rush, which others have already mentioned here... 1. They are perfectionists and when something goes wrong they really take it to heart, and 2. A bad night for Rush is still much better than a good night for most other bands!

    • @mikeb57469
      @mikeb57469 ปีที่แล้ว

    Bad luck with this show/recording. The issues the prior show explains so much. Bad luck (technical issues) can happen any time. No, don't like this one, maybe Geddy's voice has something to do with it. All bands seem to generate great power earlier in their careers then start to trail off to lesser stuff, the same is true here. This doesn't compare to Tom Sawyer, Free Will, 2112, etc. Neil got tired? Wow. They seem near the end here. You're right, tired. Retire. Seems like about 2012 and before is about the best you're going to get. OTOH you have the Rolling Stones...
