Don't you guys ever stop making Game Sack. You are responsible for my renewed interest in retro gaming (and my subsequent marital issues due to lack of funds and/or space).
I had it on SNES back in the day also. Last summer I learned how to 1CC the arcade version (without spoiling the fun by watching guides). It’s an amazingly fun game.
I freekin' loved Gun Force in the arcades when it came out, and the SNES version when it released. I HAVE NO IDEA WHY. I hate it now. Sunset Riders is one of the best games ever
Heh, I can notice how Dave was reading from a script back then. these days the narration is more natural. but I enjoyed this video a lot like all the game sack videos.
Oh my god I love this video, I had recently remembered a game I used to watch my older brothers play all the time but could not remember the name of it for the sake of it. However, I very clearly remember the mechanics/concept as well as art style and did my best to try and find it using my VERY limited knowledge. Nevertheless, thanks to this video, I was able to find out that the game I was thinking about was "Super C". Which is rather amusing because when I was searching, I stumbled upon "Contra" first and kept questioning why it looked soo familiar, yet, I didn't recognize any of the levels, and as it turns out, "Super C" is basically another "Contra" game. God I'm so happy I found it, I can finally pit my mind at ease.
Hmm I gotta agree on Gamesack on this one and I absolutely love Genesis music, but I honestly think that Konami only got the Gen sound right with Hyperstone Heist. Just my opinion though.
I'll second that, with the exception of a few tracks the music in Hard Corps was just a lot of messy electronica noise, and I generally like Genesis music.
It's dark, gritty and intense af and also menacing. I think it fits the game very well. You can tell that Konami went in a slightly different direction and style with this game in many aspects (compared to previous games). Less "dramatic/heroic" so to speak and more "shit just got real/welcome to hell/prepare to die". That's why I love this soundtrack.
Contra HardCorps is the best Contra game of all times. The music is amazing, the graphics of the special effects and explosions looks spectacular. And also you can choose different paths in the game and play differnt stages and get different endings. The game is a masterpiece!!
Ranger X on the Genesis or known as Ex-Ranza on the Mega Drive, giant robot, jetpack, a motorcycle that drives with you and can combine with your mech, interchangeable weapons, some of the best music and visuals on the genesis. No one seems to know about the game, nor has it come out on anything.
ryzmaker11 The Genny/MD? The system is basically totally ignored. Everyone talks about the SNES and while it's a fine system, people need to learn to branch out a bit and try games on other platforms like the Gen/MD and the Turbo Graphix/PC-Engine. But no one ever does....it's so lame.
Hellwyck Probably because it is just like the SNES. But I dunno why it's just always over shadowed no matter who you talk to or chat with online. People seem more interested in platform than games for some reason.
Excellent video! My favourite Contra is Hard Corps, cos it got rid of the top down levels and it was soooo difficult but rewarding. Loved the bosses and stages. My secong favourite is Uprising, but I gotta admit, I never finished the last boss. It was extremely difficult and the grinding kind of put me off.
Somehow I stumbled on a copy around 2013 at gamestop and I still play it now. The icing on the cake is you can unlock Contra and Super C if you prove yourself worthy
Hard Corps is one of my favourite games. The absence of the 3 shields makes it more difficult but not impossible, you always keep coming back for more to beat it and watch the 5 or 6 endings! And it has plenty of nice effects, 4 story paths and 4 characters to play with.
Contra Hard Corps is easily the best game in the series: multiple characters with their own guns, you can go to different levels based on your choices, a LOT of areas, endings and bosses, frantic action. FANTASTIC music (go listen to "Something Wonderful")....Contra 3 only has three proper levels and three short overhead zones. Characters are palette swaps, only one path, only one real ending (playing in hard). No freaking contest!
Contra III: The Alien Wars, Hard Corps Uprising, Rolling Thunder 1&2, Sunset Riders, Elevator Action, Elevator Action Returns, Vectorman, Metal Slug series, Gun Force II, Blaster Master, Gunstar Heroes, Turrican, Journey to Silius, Aliens(arcade), Metal Storm are some examples of my favorite side scrolling 2D Walk/Run 'n Guns.
I really don't know how I could sound more natural without forcing it. I think I sound pretty good. I don't know how Dave feels but I do know that he has improved a lot. But there are limitations on what can be achieved and most people don't mind. But people will keep complaining no matter what, especially on these old episodes (which is the only time we ever get these complaints). Eventually we'll just start ignoring these complaints as we'll never be good enough for some people.
Shattered Solder is the best Contra game there is! It's *very* hard, but the controls are tight, the scenery is gritty for a (very good) reason, the boss battles are the best I've seen in the genre and it has an overall brilliant execution. Likely couldn't get passed the first level and just gave up. So much for the "good ole days" huh?
Yeah, but shattered soldier has one kickass ost! I love it's songs just like the one youve featured during montage! I absolutely loved the game as well! Give it another go, please? Whoo!
Impossible that you didn't like Shattered Soldier! ...Well you didn't like Hard Cops either. Need to beat both to be in love with those amazing Contra games!
@GatorM Ah yes, that one DID cross my mind during the making but for whatever reason I forgot it. I knew something like that would happen so that's why I said we'll probably miss some.
@@robertbektas1810 The difficulty of the game ramps up considerably after you complete the first 4 missions. I actually thought level 5 was the final mission until I finally defeated the level boss. I was surprised to then be sent on an R-Type side scrolling space shooter mission. Then there's a rematch with all of the level bosses then the final boss.
mechredd I’ve played the game and I can appreciate why people like it, but it’s not for me. The difficulty quite often spikes like in the second stage when you fight one of the hardest bosses in the game. The fifth stage is extremely repetitive and goes on for too long. The minecart segment is also really tedious etc
We had to impose some sort of limits otherwise we'd have to include every single game where the character shoots. In this case, a weapon that could be shot up as well as side-to-side was required. Yeah yeah Journey to Silius is in the montage and honestly it shouldn't have been.
The Shattered Soldier track you used during the compilation of other Run n' Gun games (Jinmen Gyo) is enough of a reason for me to pick this game up if I ever see it for sale somewhere for a reasonable price.
@superdeadite Clearly, but unfortunately it was all I could find. Dave has the real Famicom version on the way, but he didn't find out about it until we were recording this episode, so I had to include the hacked ROM.
Thanks for turning me on to hard corps uprising on the PS3. I play the hell out of it now that I know about it. It flew under my radar because I don't shop for digital only games that often.
The here so often questioned song from the "rest of the sack games" starting at 15:51 is in fact from Contra - Shattered Soldier OST, Track 20, Jinmen Gyo... (Overall a pretty badass industrial-techno/metal-Soundtrack btw...) Thanks to the past @bohottie who finally led me on the right (sound)track, as the soundtrack information in the video is really vague... :)
Bro I know this comment and vid are old af but thank you, I thought it was an arranged gunstar thing for a bit but that's the one! Have a good one man.
@zachlolz Ranger X is kind of its own thing, not really a run n gun. I agree that it is too good. The goodness factor should have been brought down a little. :)
@WskOsc That's weird, I thought we did. Or at least I thought about that when making the episode, probably just forgot to mention it. Just the name "Probotector" makes me laugh. Contra not good enough for them? :)
@wrestletube1 We've actually received a few comments here and there to the contrary. Dave will say "ness" and "sness". I say usually "Nintendo" and "Super Nintendo". I often type, but will never say aloud "SMS".
I wonder if the same chip (I forget which one it was, I don’t think it was the super fx…) that removed slowdown on contra, gradius, and super r type could be used to fix the slowdown in gun force. If so, and the controls were reversed…I wonder if it would be good. It’s so strange to think that games released 20+ years ago could just be fixed now, and may be fun with a little help:) Also, I’ve been playing gunner’s heaven/ rapid reload (ps1) recently and it’s a blast. I know it got a bad rap for sticking close to the gunstar formula…but I think that’s probably a good thing and the sprites are great. Also also, I really wish hard corp uprising had a physical release. I’ve always wanted to play it but won’t buy digital games…it’s one of very few worth the exception though:/
Ah, I've seen most of the game displayed here but there are some which I just knew today. Thanks for the information about Rendering Ranger R2, I've just tried it and it's fun and exactly what I was searching for
Do you guys like Sunset Riders by Konami? I've only played the arcade but the music alone is reason to feature it. Oh, I notice the game has been mentioned 400 times in the comments already, but because TH-cam changed the whole comment system since then I can't see what any of your replies go to.
I watch this at night for going to sleep, and if you do a cool game I`ll write it down. But tonight when that insane Goa-Trance played at the end, I was jumping in my bed. Damn you guys, I need to wake up early tomorrow lol.
I really like the show and have seen most episodes. You guys have showed me games I've never heard of and after seeing them, I would get a copy. I'm sure its hard to keep coming up with subjects for episodes. Other than that, I just wanted to say maybe do some hidden gem episodes, games that flew under most peoples radar, even an episode titled "Just OK Games" about not great, but not bad. You guys seem to either hit one extreme or the other, and theres alot in the middle. Also, you guys are cornballs and with jokes so bad they make me laugh, you guys are doing great. Thanks for the all the work and time put into these. Also, how about "hidden areas" or "cheats that effect the game"? Just some ideas, keep up the great work gents.
Saying "Wayforward mostly develops crap" stopped me dead in my tracks. No way man, they're great. Hopefully you've changed your mind by now. If not, go play any of the recent Shantae games. If that doesn't sway you, oh well we still love you.
@MrGameSack I only own Metal Slug X and 3 on MVS. Though I do own all of them on other compilations. Regardless of how many I own or don't own doesn't change things. The additions and differences in each Metal Slug from weapons, vehicles, characters, game play systems, and much more make each one play differently. Simply putting those little factoids out there.
please help im looking for an old game around ps1 time frame is was a side scrolling shooter were the left analog was used to move as the screen scrooled to the right and the right analog was used to aim your gun. it was a 2 player game and the characters in it were i wanna say a red and blue comando type guy and you were able to pick up multiple powerups for your guns like flame throwers and lasers and this is about all i know other then there were no platourms to stand on you kinda just floated your character around the screen if anyone can help that would be amazing ive been searching the internet for about a week now and i cant figure it out so any help at all would be greatly appricated
I really loved the graphics and ESPECIALLY the music on Contra: Hard Crops. It's my favorite Contra game by far! I listen to the music all the time.
Don't you guys ever stop making Game Sack. You are responsible for my renewed interest in retro gaming (and my subsequent marital issues due to lack of funds and/or space).
One of my favourite Run'nGun is Sunset Riders, i first played on the arcade and then i got the snes version. Good times man.
The music in Contra Hard Corps is the best out of any Contra game! You guys are nuts! Such a kick ass Industrial Techno soundtrack!
Heh, I can notice how Dave was reading from a script back then. these days the narration is more natural. but I enjoyed this video a lot like all the game sack videos.
I loved Contra Shattered Soldier. Unlocked everything on that one.

For me, Contra is the best game that has ever made or will ever be made.
Are you kidding?? The music from Contra Hard Corps was awesome!
Exactly some of the best music from the genesis
For sure. It was done by Konami, after all; they always get the music right.
Hmm I gotta agree on Gamesack on this one and I absolutely love Genesis music, but I honestly think that Konami only got the Gen sound right with Hyperstone Heist. Just my opinion though.

Sunset Riders was by far my favorite all the bosses had a wonderful charm the game is amazing.
The fact i can shuffle the "oldest to newest" playlist is life changing!! I sleep so much better with this on!!! Thanks!!!
Ex-Ranza (Ranger X) is one of the numerous Mega Drive hidden gems. Even if it was very successful the system is still underrated IMO :D

Probably because it is just like the SNES.

nah, a lot of people in the UK like both.
Alien Soldier was an awesome game

My secong favourite is Uprising, but I gotta admit, I never finished the last boss. It was extremely difficult and the grinding kind of put me off.
Contra 4 on the DS by Wayforward is amazing.... don't miss it.
WayForward is really good at remakes/reboots of NES games, as it turns out.
Somehow I stumbled on a copy around 2013 at gamestop and I still play it now. The icing on the cake is you can unlock Contra and Super C if you prove yourself worthy

What happened to Robocop Vs Terminator on the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis)
Haha, that ending was really fun. I agree with you, Joe, Hard Corps is really awesome.
i have been watching an episode of game sack almost every day before bed for a year now.. and oddly i regret nothing
Contra Hard Corps is easily the best game in the series: multiple characters with their own guns, you can go to different levels based on your choices, a LOT of areas, endings and bosses, frantic action. I'm looking forward to Blazing Chrome. Hope it gets released soon, it was originally supposed to come out in April.
Even after ten year the song in the last section kicks ass!!!
Contra SS - 20 JINMEN-GYO is the track btw, saw it in another comment :)
Yeah, but shattered soldier has one kickass ost! I love it's songs just like the one youve featured during montage! I absolutely loved the game as well! Give it another go, please? Whoo!

This video got me to buy Hard Corps Uprising. I'm totally enjoying it!
I kinda liked Shattered Soldier. :(
@dumbfk12 We didn't translate it ourselves! :P It was the only ROM I could find at the time.
@misterbiglee The only thing we can say about games that didn't make it in is said at 15:32
There are just too many games for one episode.
Long live GameSack
With Gunstar Heroes the real action starts on the 5th level after the dice maze. It also has a side scrolling space shooter level.
mechredd what halfway through the game?
@@robertbektas1810

OMG I freaking LOVE Gunstar Super Heroes!
The thing is, I find it easier to play it on the small screen... I'm just used to handhelds...
Look
Love this channel to bits. Can’t stop watching
But I gotta admit. It really reminds me of “game board” from the IT Crowd
The Shattered Soldier track you used during the compilation of other Run n' Gun games (Jinmen Gyo) is enough of a reason for me to pick this game up if I ever see it for sale somewhere for a reasonable price.
adventures of batman & robin for the genesis was awesome! i l still play it from time to time! (the snes version is different)
good ep - i missed Bloody Wolf & Code Name Viper, but the glaring omission here was Elevator Action Returns!
@kodan50 We have an idea for a future episode that will be ridiculously immature, but we're not sure how/if we;ll pull it off.
@sybnios Haven't played Gun Force 2, but is Gun Force 1 actually a decent arcade game? If so, they REALLY screwed up the SNES version.
Gunstar Heros is my favorite run'n'gun game. It's actually one of my favorite games ever. I would love a faithful HD remake.
Boy you guys have gotten A LOT better since 2011. Lol
Unfortunately no, not own. :( Definitely would like to pick that one up.
@superdeadite Clearly, but unfortunately it was all I could find. Dave has the real Famicom version on the way, but he didn't find out about it until we were recording this episode, so I had to include the hacked ROM.

I want to see him try to lift a Giga-spec neogeo game :D
@Wampaa No worries. :)
@KaskelotenZebbe Yeah, but neither is Demolition Man.
Lol I think you flicked Dave's nose when you knocked that hat off his head😂
Hard Corps Uprising looked awesome! Thanks Game Sack for showing me, not sure if I would've found it, gonna go download it for PS3.
Thanks for turning me on to hard corps uprising on the PS3. I play the hell out of it now that I know about it. It flew under my radar because I don't shop for digital only games that often.

@Wampaa Thanks for your comments, but we wish to continue with the awful level of our humor... absolutely dreadful as it may be.
Imagine devoting narration to half a dozen Contra games and only including Alien Soldier in the montage.
Wayforward makes tons of great games
Ah, I've seen most of the game displayed here but there are some which I just knew today. Thanks for the information about Rendering Ranger R2, I've just tried it and it's fun and exactly what I was searching for
BTW have you guys played CT Special Forces series, Commando - Steel Disaster and Bio Mechanical Soldier?
I love this skit. My favorite.
Not sure if they count but I really loved the Super Star Wars trilogy games.
Nice so this is the first episode with the "all new" and improved Super intro 2 Deluxe edition gold (released only in the U.S)
Do you guys like Sunset Riders by Konami? I've only played the arcade but the music alone is reason to feature it.
Oh, I notice the game has been mentioned 400 times in the comments already, but because TH-cam changed the whole comment system since then I can't see what any of your replies go to.
I'm so glad you guys RGB modded everything now.
Great video guys. Have you done Point & click or Text Based yet? I'd love to see that.
Great video guys! It made me think of Bionic Commando. I'd love to see you do a video on that series sometime!
I watch this at night for going to sleep, and if you do a cool game I`ll write it down. But tonight when that insane Goa-Trance played at the end, I was jumping in my bed. Damn you guys, I need to wake up early tomorrow lol.
I watch game sack in bed before I go to sleep too lol
Without first watching the video, I'm going to say that Contra has at least 2 games on the list.
No Sunset Riders?
that is a walk n run shooter this video was for run n gun shooters
Matthew Ford I don't think walk n guns count as a genre. There's not enough of them, plus Game Sack would never do a video on Walk N Guns.
What about Jog N Gun?
No Rush’n attack?
Andrew Scott: Rush'n Attack wasn't a run 'n' gun, though it shared some elements. You don't even have a gun most of the time.
The music in the montage towards the end got me all pumped! what was it from???
did you ever find out?
Glad to see someone else appreciates Hardcorps Uprising as much as me!
this is one of the first videos of yours that i saw, i still always laugh at the seizure joke for gunstar heroes. the delivery is perfect!
Gunstar Heroes literally just became available on the 3ds E-Shop today lol
An American video with psychedelic trance music?I wasn't expecting this!
1:26 "Homing missile" nope. 1:45 You showed a ROM hack, not the actual Japanese version, which is still called Contra. Otherwise, very good video.
Turning the PS1 upside-down made my day.

Metal Slug series is my all time fav, I have yet to find a game to surpass that series.
@superdeadite Almost correct; actually it was not only the European arcade version that was caled Grzor, but also the home computer ports.
Saying "Wayforward mostly develops crap" stopped me dead in my tracks. No way man, they're great. Hopefully you've changed your mind by now. If not, go play any of the recent Shantae games. If that doesn't sway you, oh well we still love you.
@misterbiglee To be honest, I hadn't even heard of it until you mentioned it.
He talked about it in Left in the Arcade 2. I approve of your noodle implements.
Metal Slug is top tier
@ 14:37 looks just like the end of first level on contra but on a newer gen hd console, sweet!
@MrGameSack I only own Metal Slug X and 3 on MVS. Though I do own all of them on other compilations. Regardless of how many I own or don't own doesn't change things. what music is playing during the quick-look-section at the end??
Did you ever find out? I came to the comments to ask the same. Awesome tune.
I would love to know that too
