    It's time to head to The Netherlands again and to take a look at some glorified Electrostar equivalents. Or perhaps I'm being too hard on these two trains? Only one way to find out...

    Jack, the Railway Graphics guy, is away busy buying groceries so he'll draw the SLT for the thumbnail once he's back. That's why it has an IOU on it. Either way, this was fun to make. Next one in the series will be one you'll be rattling for if ADL have anything to say hehehe...
    Anyway, some Ice Cream, a coat hanger and a JPEG of a Pelican that I forgot to use in this video are up for grabs for the individual who guesses all the stations filmed at. The SLT ramp clip doesn't count.

    I look forward to a review on the 195s and 331s, since I've heard that the Civitys are not as good as I was initially thinking (especially in terms of ride quality, from what I gather). The only CAF units I've ridden on are the ones in Auckland, and they actually give a reasonably smooth ride. Seems like Northern took two steps forward, one or more steps back when introducing the Pacer replacements.
    As for these Dutch units, I find it a little odd that they still run on 1,500 volts DC (though I suspect that it's due to the age of the system). New Zealand used to have three sections electrified on these same voltage - Otira to Arthur's Pass, Christchurch to Lyttelton and the Wellington suburban lines. It'd be nice to have a Dutch route in TSW (especially if it included the ex-Woodhead electrics), but knowing what DTG are like, I doubt we'll ever see anything that interesting in the game.

    • @MaverickHunterDaniel
      @MaverickHunterDaniel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They still use 1500 V DC because it's what they've been using since the 1920s and costs a billion euros to upgrade it to even 3000 V DC :(. Also good luck waiting for anything of value for Benelux for TSW. There's a reason I never wasted my time with it beyond the demo. I could see what was coming from a mile away.

    Double deckers are nice for capcity, but they have fewer doors/need staircases which ramps up the dwell time at stations by a lot, making them quite a bit slower overall.

    • @MaverickHunterDaniel
      @MaverickHunterDaniel  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've recieved this comment before on an other video, but the MI 2Ns are my go-to example of double decker suburban trains that can (sort of) work. It has 6 large doors per coach and multiple staircases. The vestibule areas around the doors look as big as the DDZ/DD-ARs which is pretty impressive.

    • @daanwolters3751
      @daanwolters3751 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MaverickHunterDaniel It can (sort of) work true, but it still increases dwell time at stations. So it is a pick your poison type of situation.
      AND double decker trains have a higher axle load (the ns virms are the heaviest trains the ns has by a lot (having the same axle load as a traxx locomotive), which means more maintenance in the netherlands as the gound is far too weak for any train. (The hsl-zuid keeps having issues for this reason, the ground is far too weak to go at high speeds, even with ridiculous foundations).

    Double decker trains are not so good for the "sprinter" services with closely spaced stations at short intervals. 4 sets of doors aren't enough to get everyone on and off quickly, and if you do a Paris RER A and put 6 doors per carriage, the train becomes mostly stair, with as many seats as a single decker of equivalent length

    • @MaverickHunterDaniel
      @MaverickHunterDaniel  ปีที่แล้ว

      I can sort of understand that, though other countries seem to pull it off decently enough such as Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Belgium, Austria, Italy and the Transilien services in france. I mean, the new double deck RER NG trains that are being ordered for Paris have only 4 sets of doors too, though whether it'll have the same issue or not is anyone's guess.

    A few comments;
    - First class is provided on all* (99%) of trains in the Netherlands to simplify ticketing.....Sprinter trains also need to be capable of running intercity services in the odd unusual situation. The comfort in First class is terrible on Sprinters, but it has to be provided because a large portion of first class travellers aren't paying for it themselves. Usually, their employer pays.
    - Since a lot of first class passengers aren't paying for it themselves, these compartments are quite full during peak hours and that's why there is relatively more of it than in other countries. The extra first class section on SLT wasn't a problem, but the lack of a toilet was and NS were forced to add them after lawsuits and political controversy.
    - SNGs have a bad reputation because of their highly uncomfortable seating and awkward text to speech announcements, although the announcements have been improved somewhat now, they're still quite bad. SLTs have a bad reputation because they are quite outdated (although they were very modern in 2007) and the legroom in Second class is truly terrible in some seats. It's also quite hard to stand in the gangway.
    - Double deckers are not an option for Sprinter trains due to dwell times during rush hour. It's also not possible to build a double decker train with level boarding. NS is currently ordering new double deckers, but they will mostly be used on intercity services and they will not feature level boarding on most coaches.

      @@spoorwegenTF2 Don't get me wrong, I like Dutch triains and all, but I wouldn't be caught dead buying a monthy subscription for first class over there. The only time I ride in First is when it's cheaper than Standard, which happens with Grand Central over here for some reason.

    • @SLT2609
      @SLT2609 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Honestly.. I don't find SLT that old as they are at the moment. It's only the lighting which doesn't look modern, but otherwise I can't say that the SLT is pretty much outdated, especially not if you compare it with ICM or the ICR combined with traxx locomotives as they are the oldest trains of the NS.
      The only thing I like of the SNG is basically the power sockets and wifi (but wifi doesn't always work though). For all other parts I prefer SLT which is good for a sprinter train.
      Also, when the midlife revision of the SLT comes, they will get a 'flow' exterior like the modernised VIRM 2/3 have and hopefully the SLTs will get a bit more space on the 4-sits and comfortable enough to drive as an intercity as they will in the future drive as intercities as well as sprinters.
      However, most people don't even care if they have a SLT or SNG for as long as they can have a seat. For me, I rather would travel in a SNG for at maximum 30 minutes while I can travel in a SLT for maybe an hour.
      But overall both trains aren't that bad. :)

    • @spoorwegenTF2
      @spoorwegenTF2 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SLT2609 but why do you feel that ICM or ICR is more outdated? it's certainly older, but the comfort and decoration are much better. There's even large tables and power outlets, wifi, surely that makes it less outdated than SLT without basically anything. it will be nice to finally see them modernize SLT in a couple of years and add outlets, tables and nicer lighting like in ICNG.

      Mhmm. Italy comes to mind when they refurbished their flagship ETR 500 sets. The power cars were designed to be compatitble with other rolling stock so instead of scrapping them, they put them on lower tier Frecciabianca high speed services with Eurofirma coaches and reclass them as the E.414. They still reach 200kph but more importantly, they actually use them instead of letting them rot away in a depot.
      The equivelant here was the GWR HST Castle Sets, but imagine they were full length, had a buffet, cycle spaces and used them on London - Plymouth/Penzance instead of Semi Fast Bristol and Devon services.

      We dutch people just have an expensive public transport system and we love to complain about how expensive everything is and we love to complain about companies such as NS or Arriva, but if we compare it with other countries it is not even bad at all honestly.
      Also for sprinters, first class has only been made for a higher chance on a seat as it can be very busy during rush hours.
      I have to admit: Sprinters have been built for what they are actually are: stopping at every station (there are enough exceptions for that as well such as the line from Utrecht to Leiden and Utrecht - Almere as both of them skip some stations).
