    Looking more together this time out overall, just the one trip slightly up the bank at Quarry. Good to see you've been able to adjust to save brakes without necessarily killing your speed.
    As for the 1967 cars, the back side of Bremgarten isn't just a flat-out blast by any stretch of the imagination. If anything, it may be a bit like how you describe Masta at Spa being in the '67 cars as compared to the '55 machinery
    Although the setting is fairly similar to the Nurburgring, obviously, Bremgarten is quite a bit quicker on average speed, and a good bit easier to maintain your brakes.
    Mentioning the fumes from the cars, they think that was a major cause for Tazio Nuvolari's deteriorating health in his later years, and he wasn't that terribly old when he died as I recall.
    The "t" in Connaught should be voiced, as they were British, not French. Speaking of which, their 1952 A-Type, 2.0-liter F1 car is freakin' gorgeous. The B-Type, which is what's in the mod, also had a streamliner version, like the Mercedes, in its 1954 and '55 guises. Honestly though, for the open-wheel version, I think the 1954 B-Type was the best-looking one.
    On the streamliner tangent, there was a 1955-56 Maserati 250F streamliner, as well as a Lancia-Ferrari D50 with special treatment in 1956. The 1956 Bugatti Type 251 was kind of a streamliner by default, though I think the nose on that one was simply too blunt to help much with drag. And Vanwall built a streamliner in 1957 as well.
    The Gordini is an odd one, and I don't know why they went with the T16, 2.0-liter car, and not the T32, 2.5-liter car for this mod.
    And a correction of an earlier commebt. While the Lancia was under 1,400 lb, making 260 hp, the Ferrari 625 F1 and 555 SS were both closer to 1,300 lb, the 555 being almost exactly that light, and making 270 hp. What helped the Lancia so much was probably those pontoon tanks filling the gap between the wheels on either side, cutting down substantially on drag I'd have to think.
    Yeah, that got a bit hairy with the lappery. The AI could use a bit of adjusting.

    Fantastic! That was really well done. You managed your brakes perfectly, especially under such pressure from Fangio and the back markers. I truly consider this as one of the greatest racetracks ever. The guys who made it originally made it for GP2, which is where I first discovered it. Raced here so many times in GPL over the years, it is such an incredible rush. Sadly the version in rf2 is quite different, which is weird. Good luck with the championship.

    • @Villoresi
      @Villoresi 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure why it's sad that the rFactor 2 version is different.
      From the film clips I can readily find, the Quarry section is oversimplified in this version, which isn't surprising. Now, they might have overdone the severity of the fall-away into it in rF2 and Assetto Corsa, the one from the first rFactor was maybe more like it, but I don't think it was as "easy" as this depiction makes it out to be. Also, the newer versions are more accurate in how that building on the right at Quarry stands out more, as well as things like the fence on the right through Jorden and down toward Eymatt weaving and going up and down the hillside there a bit. Also, you notice the bridge more just before Forsthaus in these later renditions, which makes sense.
      There isn't much footage from Trintignant and Glasbrunnen, but what there is does show that a notable amount of sunlight reaches te road back there. So it wasn't a total tunnel effect by any means in those days.
      The old video also shows that the trees weren't right up to the edge of the road on drivers' right as you passed Jorden and got down toward Eymatt and Tenni. I don't think things were as bare as the Assetto Corsa mod shows in that area, but it was at least somewhat open.
      The main challenge the newer renderings seem to have is in getting these roadside slopes to look right at the point where they meet the road or the grass verges. The Quarry section especially can look kind of weird.

    • @markjones5163
      @markjones5163 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Villoresi it's sad due to that wonderful flow from the first turn down into and through the quarry that I'm used too is not possible in rf2 due to the massive drop that does not seem correct in the videos I've seen.

    • @Villoresi
      @Villoresi 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@markjones5163 The best bit of race footage I've been able to find of it is from the highlights of the 1953 Swiss GP. Unfortunately, it doesn't show the top of the fall-away; you see the cars from the back as they go by and continue down between the buildings on either side.
      What I can say from the video, photos, and written descriptions I've seen is that there are a few clear discrepancies between the depiction here and the real circuit as it was in period.
      First, the descent into the Quarry (Kiesgrube, I think the section is called in the German) doesn't really begin until after Bethlehem corner. This pretty much requires that some portion of the drop must be steeper than what we see here (same vertical change in less horizontal distance). Next, the first part of the next sequence, a right-hander, is missing outright in the GPL version of Bremgarten, which will also necessarily tighten the left-hander that follows. And on the back side of the sequence, you have the left/right flick before the main left bend as you climb out toward Eicholz.
      From one photo taken from the front with the cars coming at the camera that I spotted while searching, the road surface at the start of the right/left/right coming down into the Quarry cannot be seen, indicating an increase in the steepness of the slope for that part.
      One thing I've also now noted about the rFactor, Assetto Corsa, and Automobilista iterations of Bremgarten is that you have a milder initial drop, then it levels off, creating a de facto little hump, before the main part of the descent. This is what causes the major complications in this section in those games. That said, with the first right-hander actually in place, that sequence won't be quite as wide-open as it is in GPL.
      Beyond the track itself, it makes a real difference the type of cars running on the course in the games. The Voiturettes at least don't seem to be in a performance window, not to mention their weight, to be able to fly at the Quarry; I think the Pre-War GP cars are in a similar boat, with maybe the fastest ones able to get a little air there. At the time though, the cars would fly at a number of the circuits, so it wasn't such a big deal. In terms of the 1955 cars, it seems like 80 mph will keep you on the ground, and 90 mph will still only give you limited air, but ~100 mph would realistically toast your suspension upon landing. And the 1967 F1 cars would be setting distance records before piling into the embankments at the speeds they do going flat-out over the top. Perhaps, some lines over the hump would be notably less likely to lead to takeoff, but you still have to be able to negotiate the corners below.
      And of course, where the '30s cars can't apex Bethlehem at better than 80 mph probably, the '55 cars are doing ~90 mph, and the '67 cars might be able to swing through there at as much as 110 mph.
      I know this is long. I was just trying to give my observations from the real races, as well as what the other games show. I wish I could give a definitive answer on the severity of that drop, as I'd like to know what that section of the course was really like once and for all, too. Still, like I said the first time around, it's safe to say that the GPL rendering is oversimplified, and a more accurate version would be a welcome addition.
      At least with the '55 cars, I don't think it would be a matter of slamming on the brakes even with the slope, hump, and drop version of Quarry; however, even with a gentler descent, I think the real Quarry would have the '67 cars getting some serious flight time at unabated speed.

    • @markjones5163
      @markjones5163 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Villoresi thanks for the reply. Very interesting stuff. Regarding the 1953 Swiss gp video, I agree it is annoying you can't see the actual drop as the car goes behind some shrubbery but you can hear it still, and the driver doesn't appear to lift off at all. And neither do the others following. The next shot I think is showing the middle of the quarry, and though it's blurry the cars don't appear to be recovering from landing a jump. It looks bumpy, and a descent and then rise to the uphill left hander, but it doesn't seem like an actual jump and certainly not the likes of in rf2, where as you say anything over 90 mph results in serious flight time, a speed the 50's cars should be able to get there after accelerating from Bethlehem. Also, I would have thought if there was such a leap at that track, that people would have talked about it, and there'd be those action shots of cars going over it (like at the Flugplatz). Sadly it seems that part of the track in particular no longer exists, although most of the track is gone, as I understand it converted into walking tracks through the woods. Thanks for the read.

    • @Villoresi
      @Villoresi 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@markjones5163 A couple things to remember about those old clips. Although they do a decent job of giving the impression of it here, the audio is frequently not synced up with the video. Also, though this is mainly for the slow(er) corners, they will sometimes speed it up. For instance, the shots from Forsthaus in the 1954 highlights appear to be sped up to make the cars look like they're going faster to increase the excitement factor.
      I watched the 1953 highlights again, but in that particular shot, I had the feeling that the cars were on too straight a line for too long approaching the bend for it to be at the exit of the Quarry. Also, though I'm slightly less certain of this being the case, the annotated version of the video lists the location of that shot as "Eymatt richtung Glasbrunnen" (Eymatt toward Glasbrunnen). If that's accurate, then it's definitely not a shot of the Quarry. (There is yet another shot of what I think is the Quarry in one video of the 1948 race, different as compared to what I've seen in the 1953, '51, and '38 clips.)
      As I noted, points where cars would fly were much more common in the 1930s and '50s. The main ones I've seen are on the Melbourne Loop at old Donington, and of course, Flugplatz. However, just at the Nurburgring, there were, potentially, as many as 8 such places where cars could leave the deck to varying degrees. Watkins Glen (1948-52) had one over a level grade crossing. With fast enough cars, Montjuich Park had one past start/finish. And I can imagine that Pescara, the Masaryk Ring/Brno, and Montenero/Livorno, just to name a few, could have had a few jumps each. So they didn't get the universal attention we'd think they would now, and it starts looking like it wouldn't be so hard for them to escape great notice.
      If it means an end to their race, the drivers aren't going to go flying into there, obviously. And if they're having a serious problem slowing down, they'd likely go off at Bethlehem in the first place. The road condition in these games is almost definitely better than it was back then, and it wouldn't surprise me if the tire models are slightly optimistic, too; so I'm not sure the cars could go through that initial right/left really fast anyway. It's tight through there on the ground as it is, and getting a small jump lets you cheat the line a bit.
      Finally, I don't think the modders who did the rF, AS, or AMS versions of the track were trying to get the details wrong. It's also rather interesting how consistent those three are with one another. (Now, if we could just get any detailed model of Pescara for even one of the games.)

    On the topic of Tenni (which is indeed pronounced "Tennee") and accidents at this track: Tenni corner was named after Italian motorcycle racer Omobono Tenni, who was killed in an accident at Bremgarten in 1948. The same race weekend also claimed the life of Achille Varzi.

    • @Villoresi
      @Villoresi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's also Trintigant corner on the far side of the circuit, named after Maurice Trintignant, naturally. He got caught up in a tangle on that section during the 1948 Voiturette support race for the GP. He was ejected from the car and landed in the middle of the road. Bira, Farina, and Manzon took evasive action, with the last two crashing themselves. Maurice spent 8 days in a coma, but fully recovered and ended up competing in the first 15 seasons of F1 (1950-64).

    One major remark: there were no such thing as "F1 season" in 1955 (in fact, up until 1981!). The World Championship of Drivers was a competition established by FIA, but it DID NOT sanction any event. Each race was sanctioned, rules set and held by a local organizer (for instance, Grand Prix de l'A.C.F. by ACF). Despite many other races ran in F1 class (not sure about other notation - "Formula A"), FIA included in its championship only so-called Grand Epreuves, regardless of the class of cars (somewhat similar to the current Grand Slam in tennis).
    Therefore, Indy 500 (International 500-Mile Sweepstakes) was a part of both World Championship of Drivers and AAA/USAC National Championship Trail, and races with F2-class cars constituted the calendar in 1952-53, as well as some mixed-class races (F1 and F2) in the following years.

    • @Villoresi
      @Villoresi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I had the same thought with regards to Spain given the circuits available. If you were less concerned with fidelity in some sense, the most similar track to Pedralbes for GPL might be Porto.

    • @Dilip122S
      @Dilip122S 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Porto's OK.... but a little bland by comparison with Montjuich. Straight, braking zone, corner, straight, braking zone, corner, repeat. Montjuich has elevation changes, tightening apexes, and is a more engaging circuit. The graphics are better, too. But I agree that Porto is probably closer to Pedralbes in terms of layout. I would still love to see the brake-fading 50's gpl cars racing at the spectacular Montjuich, and see if, on a twistier circuit, Richie Axelson can maybe get a final dig in at the all-conquering Fangio. 😁

    • @gr0bbelaar
      @gr0bbelaar 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Dilip122S Yeah, Porto I think is the best bet considering that it's more similar to Pedralbes than Montjuich. But of course, Montjuich is a cooler track.

    • @Villoresi
      @Villoresi 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I certainly think Montjuich is the more interesting circuit in a number of respects. That said, I made a suggestion based on the track it would be replacing, but also, I'm not sure just how much "fun" the Barcelona course will be with these cars. It may be quicker than Monaco, but I'm not sure you'll have a whole lot more usable straight to actually race.
