  • I created this portrait posing video as an easy guide to help provide some additional tips for poses with a female model. Portrait photography is a combination of great light, poses, and camera know how. For this video I focused strictly on posing with a female model. I captured this video outdoors to show how these posing techniques could be used anywhere and not just in my studio setting. Some of the posing tips in here are not just for the model, but things to keep in mind while capturing portraits in general that will help to improve your photos. In this posing video of Janie who is a non model friend of mine, I wanted to give some beginner tips on how to pose a female model or client outside with a few easy poses to get you started. Sometimes we have great ideas for a portrait photography session, but posing doesn’t come as easily. If your model or client doesn’t know how to pose and you have to give more direction this video will help any beginner photographer with a few tips and ideas for posing techniques that can be applied to any subject. Some of these posing ideas are great for not just female models, but for any model or client you have that you are taking portraits of. The key is to not overcomplicate your portrait photography with elaborate poses, make it easy for your model or subject to feel comfortable in a pose and don’t be afraid to share your tips with them so they are aware of what the pose should look like. When giving your model direction with poses let them know what to expect especially if they have never posed before or are having their portrait taken for the first time. Letting them in on what type of poses and ideas you have for the portraits will help posing look so much more natural and keep your subject assured of what your expectation of them is and allow them to feel more confident in the pose. In addition to your models pose make sure that you are also using some of the beginner tips that are in this video as well to help give you a few more options to improve your photo with a few simple steps. Hope you found this beginner posing tutorial helpful and easy to follow. Let me know in the comments what your favorite poses and techniques for portrait photography are. Are you using any of these poses or tips already? What are your go to poses and tips when capturing portraits?
