    Christian Dogma:
The evolution of the New Testament and the divinity of Christ
by Pastor Davis "Lee" Love III
Reading the New Testament the flow of the gospels are as follows; the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke and finally, John. However, more and more conservative Christian scholars now believe and assert that the order of the gospels should be, Mark, Matthew, Luke and John. Why is that? What evidence is there to support such claims?
One of the major reasons you find the synoptic gospels set in the order they currently are is because they "flow better" and "fit modern Christian theology better". However, when we explore the history of when the gospels were written a slightly different narrative starts to emerges, which we will explore later.
    Who Copied Who?
It's helpful to first start off with a time-line, so here it is:
    • Gospel of Mark: circa 65-75 AD (significant event --70 AD is the year in which the Temple in Jerusalem fell to Roman legions)
    • Gospel of Matthew: circa 85 AD
    • Gospel of Luke: circa 85 AD
    • Gospel of John: circa 90-100 AD
The Gospel of Mark was written first and was probably most likely as a source for the other Gospels with the exception of John's Gospels which seems to have written from a fresh. [see New Testament history by FF Bruce and Richard J. Bauckham: Jesus and the Eyewitnesses: The Gospels as Eyewitness Testimony for further clarification and evidence]
So, why is this important in relation to understanding the biblical narrative and evolution of Christian theology? Well it is important to know that Mark's gospel was written first and in the main was used as a source for the other Gospels predominantly, Matthew and Luke. and connects them, explaining away the many similarities in the stories found within them. However, in both Matthew and Luke's gospels you will find significant "improvements in the text" and additional layering to the narrative when compared to the Gospel of Mark.
