This film, the late Jonathan Miller's adaptation of M R James's Oh Whistle and I'll Come to You, My Lad for the B. B. C are the best ghost stories ever committed to film.Though there are others that come close, they don't quite capture the atmosphere and imaginative direction of these two absolute classics.
I couldn't sleep after seeing this for the first time. It grabs you on a deep psychological level. The special effects are subtle but powerful (no buckets of blood needed). My all-time favorite horror film. A classic Gothic thriller. "No one will come here, in the night, in the dark....at least no one you'd want to know (the caretaker's wife).👍
My mom introduced me to this film when I was a sickly asthmatic kid. It cemented my life long love of well-crafted ghost and horror films. Nothing I've since seen has made a deeper mark. Very nuanced and atmospheric- an art that seems to be largely lost.
I personally hold it as the greatest score written for a film. Humphrey Searle was terribly neglected as a composer by the film industry ( it didn't matter to him, for he was a prolific composer in his own right ); both this for The Haunting, and his score for Hammer's 1957 The Abominable Snowmen , are avant-garde British film music at their best. Shame that we never appreciated all this back then........it's criminal no master tapes exist........it'd be a wonderful CD release!
The film score to The Haunting adds tremendously to the atmosphere of the movie. It's just one of the things that make this film an all time classic, and very creepy!
I just recently bought this film, having seen it one time already. This is a truly creepy film, and this instrumental/speaking score sure adds to the chills of what would soon come. The big reason I love this film better than the remake is because there is a mentioning of the history on the house itself before the major characters are introduced. It adds to the intensity.
Without a doubt the original 1963 version of the haunting was vastly superior to the 1999 remake which was more a 'star wars' version with all the CGI cammed in it.
Yes, would somebody please get the full score of The Abominable Snowman put on c.d. It's a truly evocative piece of music and deserving of a wider audience. It reminds me a little of of the score for the British film Scott of the Antarctic, another wonderful filmscore.
