A lot of people saying its meaningless are wrong. Its not meaningless. Its full of big wordplay, poetry and diss. He wrote it as he says "in a stream if consciousness" . He is known for his lyrics and it shows in this too
Yeah, I thought this misconception abt the lyrics being meaningless died back in 2019, esp when he never said it in his interview abt the song, so I'm surprised so many cmmts are still sharing it here.
Thank you for saying this!! Sooo many people keep calling the lyrics meaningless, but if people actually take the time to read them, they’d see that that’s obviously untrue. As usual, Namjoon is creatively expressing his honest thoughts. This time, it happens to be in a stream of consciousness style rap addressing haters and naysayers while flexing his technical skills 🤷🏻♀️

To explain why RM made this song :
So you probably know that RM and Suga received a lot of flak from the underground K-hip hop community when they signed with an Idol company. In addition to that people would try and shade his rap skills, saying he had no skills and no flow. So he made this song as 'joke' to show off his flow and speed and also shade back on the criticism by pointing out that you can rap as fast as you want but if you're just saying nonsense then what's the point? Hence there's no hook, just bars after bars and some nonsense words like 'bibbidy bobbidy.. *Joke is an intelligent sattire for people who think rapping fast without any meaningful lyrics and flow is cool or good.* The bibbiby babbiby verse you heard him say is the joke of him dissing the mumble jumble rappers. Joke is not just "fast rap" with no meaning. RM is the KING of wordplays. He focuses a lot on lyricism, double/triple entendre and flow. He gets his inspiration from 90's hip hop if you wanna check out his first mixtape.
but simply the other rappers are making fun of him because he can't rap fast and only focus on lyricism which is why he made this song for them. he said "hit me" at the end to allow others to diss him again. but nobody did anything yet. King's shit. fun fact: RM was at one point one of the top students in all South Korea, boy is a GENIUS...

His rap is not only skillful but extremely intelligent. Makes me wish I knew Korean to fully understand all the wordplay and references.
It's nine flows without chorus but a whole ass rapping. He even recorded this with his breathing problem because of his nose, but he still nailed it. Rap Monster in that era is something else. 🤧
RM has never said the lyrics were meaningless. He's said that he wrote the lyrics as a "stream of consciousness" and that "there’s nothing hidden behind the lyrics." He made this straightforward, rather than put in deeper emotions/thoughts that he usually does with his regular lyrics.
So, I take it as him saying Joke is more just a straight diss track rather than being a song with multilayered messages.
♦️ This song RM's 'Joke' was directed to all his haters who ever questioned, doubted, or put him down!! RM called this Joke, because he's sort of shading a lot of other rappers by showing them all up, doing all different styles of rap, trap, mumble rap, speed, etc, just throwing it out there calling what some others do as a Joke, compared to him!! Even to the point where he's saying 'I told you that I'm monster!! That I be rapping nonstop'!! He's just throwing it back to all the haters out there. Showing all different styles, and one upping them and then some. 👍❤️🔥😍🔥
Hearing this song really changes the way you see him, right!? Once you know he's got this in him, there's no going back. He's matured a lot since this, but his abilities only grew as well.
This is true. I also thought after watching this video the first time, that I'm gonna get hardcore aggressive rap like yoongi does but he's far from it. He's such a poet in every sense. How amazing we r fans of such talented artists. They so different, so same still

Yeah, rm and suga got a lot of sh*t from other rappers after joining bts, and their solo work was a way for them to vent in a more raw way than they could through bts’ songs…they were frustrated and angry, and it shows… I hate that people made them feel this way, but I absolutely love the way they dealt with it😎
This song was a response to other rappers saying he can’t rap anymore because he’s an idol. He wrote this song in about 30 minutes, and it is just stream of consciousness. I feel like this is the closest we get to seeing inside his mind, until his album rpwp.

I love this RM. For those who doubted about his talent, this puts and end to that. My favorite lines: "I´m elastin, you are dandruff", jajaj. I am good protein, you are a fungus. Then, he being Rap Monster, saying he is son of a Stitch, it is funny. Love the movie Lilo and Stitch, I think RM is such a mishievieous but at the end a good monster.

He can switch up smooth, the flow of multiple Rapping styles & Beats & Lyrics together with MultiDilectz, mixing up Multiple Languages is just That’s him. There’s no Rapper like Rap Monster. One of the Very best top Among Global Rappers. There’s no Rapper who can Mix up multiple things with Versatility Rap like that. Most if not all Famous rappers rap in single language. Mostly single flow/ Beats. So, Kim Namjoon is Right up on Top Worldwide Rappers of all time. There’s no doubt about it.
BTS does what they want which is why they do so many genres. Group songs are different because there’s 7 and they make sure each other shines so solo they can go more rouge
The only requirement their management company put on them when they started was that they had to be making music with their own voices and their own stories. BTS was really unique in that it had RM and Suga, two producers, to produce their music authentically.
Newer gen kpop groups have emulated this a little bit, but at the time that BTS started, they were unique. That may be why their lyrics resonated with the youth of Korea so much, because they were also Korean youths and they were talking about real shit.
But yeah. The solo albums are where they get to go crazy and experiment a little bit more with what kind of music they personally want to write, and the messages they personally want to project.
AgustD is Yoongi’s stage persona that he created, separate from BTS, to rap about things that he needed to get out and heal from. You’ll see him soon I’m sure ☺️

Don’t worry about the lyrics at the start no matter what ARMYs say. It is just NOT POSSIBLE. These numbers have to be watched SEVERAL TIMES. There is just no way to do all in one go.
When people say meaningless phrases I think what they meant is that this rap focused on showing off his word acrobatics which isn’t the most sophisticated form of rapping and RM knew this.

I honestly love this song because of all the reasons you pointed out. And although these days RM says that he has some regrets about this mixtape, I am glad that he did it and it is out there for all of his fans who actually love all sides of him, not just his polished kpop leader image. And I am very happy that now he did comeback to his roofs in RPWP (his last solo album), saying everything he wanted just the way it is.

This song is literally a joke. Namjoon just made this crazy song with random lyrics to show haters that he can rap fast too. But does it matter if it’s fast or not? The lyrics are meaningless and the complete opposite of his other songs that are very deep and meaningful. GENIUS! 💜
yeah, agree to an extent, but if u take a look closer theres a lot of lyrics that make sense too, especially i u check doolset for the double entendres, or metaphors

If they are going in release order of solos mixtape/albums then it's: RM 2015, Agust D 2016, J-Hope 2018, RM 2018, Agust D 2020, J-Hope 2022 and then we start getting songs from the vocal line. BTS are an anomaly in Kpop, they have always been from the very beginning heavily involved with writing, producing, & the messages or creative themes of their albums this was extremely rare back then and even now to some extent. Newer groups now have a bit more opportunities to get some say in their music because of BTS being so successful. BTS have always been outliers and pushed the boundaries. I just say their BTS pop at this point because they are so different from the others that it's kinda crazy ngl.

I've said before that swearing is a huge no-no in K-pop, and BTS are expected to never deliberately swear, however, Bang PD has never restricted the member's solo work. Yes, swearing is used, but it's with a purpose, and never just used frivolously to show that they're really badasses, and what we see in BTS is the fake them. They're not trying to impress anyone by showing that they can swear.
I read for the first time a couple of months ago, that Bang PD tried to speak to B Free after the roasting he gave RM and SUGA, but B Free wouldn't speak with him - guess he was too chicken. I suspect that Bang PD is hugely proud of the diss tracks RM and SUGA/Agust D released. It follows very much the way that Big Hit and BTS have always handled haters.

BYS were an anomaly. BTS were the second try BANG SI HYUK made trying to form a group round RM. He had complete faith in him. RM said they would let him put out anything he believed in strongly enough to fight for. Most Kpop at this time just performed music and raps they were given. RM and Duga were writying and producing their own work from the begining. The company acting as quality control and in house producers polishing and adding to the final product. I heard somewhere though yhevunderground rappers dragged RM and Suga for becoming idols there was a rap battle where a rappers reminded his opponent how he had been owned by ac13 year old a RM. Of the multiple names he used like Runch Randa I cannot remember which name it was. Anyone remind me?
RM has a 148 IQ so his stream of consciousness has more meaning and connections than lyrics we work on. You can pause.
