  • AVOID DISASTER: This ONE THING Drastically Increases the Chance of Paragliding Accident!! Turbulent air and stall point on paragliders. How dangerous is it?
The way a paragliding wing responds to our inputs depends on various weather conditions such as wind speed, wind direction, turbulence,… Flying in different conditions requires us, as paragliding pilots, to adjust our piloting techniques. For instance, the amount of brake pressure we apply for turning or flaring needs to be adapted. This is because using the same amount of brake pressure on a calm day and on a turbulent day would yield vastly different reactions from our wing.
For example, if we typically need to pull our brakes 50cm deep to reach the stall point on a calm day, this measurement could be significantly less on a turbulent day. Consequently, our stall point could occur much faster in turbulent conditions. Adjusting our piloting techniques accordingly ensures safer flights!

I find that when it happens, it's easier on the pride to to say that "the glider stalled"... Some people forget that they are piloting the glider, not the other way around!
Thank you for the video! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I had a pretty nasty crash along those lines as well. Landing into fairly strong wind, with a fairly strong gradient (quite a bit less wind at the bottom) got an asymmetric collapse due to turbulence and then just didn't have enough airspeed to recover before the ground. While in my case I'm not sure if there were many options left (I was at or very close to trim speed and only braked to stop the rotation) the wind gradient is important to keep in mind, especially when landing in strong wind. If there is already a wind gradient eating up air speed it takes very little to stall or delay a collapse from repopening.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us! We really hope everything was okay with you 🙏 Absolutely, wind is a major factor not just when it comes to landing itself but also in collapses - how our wing reacts. Depending on the wind, our wing will react completely differently, which can quickly catch us off guard if we're not 100% focused. At the end of the day, such things happen so fast that it's really hard to be 'smart' afterwards... All we can do is practice a lot of ground handling, possibly go for an SIV course, and practice things that help us gain as much feeling for our wing in as many different situations as possible. On top of that, we should never forget to not underestimate the power of the wind and to respect nature and our limits. Thank you for your comment! Happy flights and safe landings! 🦅

Had a wind change top landing.
Felt the wing go, but there was nothing I'm aware i could do.
Fell what felt like 10 metres, but probably only 2.
Very happy with the harnesses padding performance.
New wing (rush 6), I weighed myself and unknown to me, I'd dropped from 90kg to 84kg.
So, including kit, i was flying a 95-115 weight range wing at 96kg.
I'd say, the wind change, top landing, unfamiliar wing, low weight, combined to all contribute to the collapse.
    Plus my inexperience.

Ouch! Wind changes can definitely be problematic, especially when top landing... We really hope everything was okay with you and your gear! In such scenarios, it is really good to have harness with good protection🙏 Thank you for sharing your experience with us! Happy flights and safe landings 🙏

    Yep.
    Another stall accident, in 2022.
Flying for 2 hours, mid-summer here in Southern Japan, and I stupidly forgot to refill my camel back.
I became partially dehydrated, and wasn't thinking straight, when I "suddenly chose" to do a side landing, near some low trees. 🤦‍♂️
Pulled too much brake on my Cayenne 6, and had to be ambulanced to A&E.
Only a minor fracture in my left wrist due to falling/spinning about 4m sideways, into the hill. But it could've been much worse.
NOT wearing my watch probably saved me from having a shattered wrist.

ive accidently stalled a glider from a sudden strong thermal just by leaving a touch of brake on as it pitched back, so can relate to this video.
