    ==============================================================================
    If you have vertigo that has been diagnosed as BPPV or you suspect that is the type of vertigo you have, you may be wondering what in the world caused it and more importantly how to get rid of it.
    Unfortunately We don’t always know what causes it but let’s go over the most common reasons people get BPPV.
    First of all, what is it? BPPV stands for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. That’s a lot of big words so let’s break it down. Benign means it’s not harmful or serious even though it is extremely unpleasant.
    Paroxysmal means a sudden attack.
    Positional refers to the fact that it is related to changes in body position.
    Vertigo means a false sensation of spinning.
    Putting that all together describes the condition quite well, a harmless but sudden attack of spinning sensation brought on by a change in position. That harmless part could be debatable, because you could fall and injure yourself during a vertigo attack but the actual condition itself is harmless.
    The spinning sensation is caused when a small crystal inside the inner ear becomes dislodged and floats through the canals of the inner ear. These are basically fluid filled tubes that help us sense movement. These crystals aren’t supposed to be there and when they float freely within the tube they cause a false sensation of movement or spinning.
    Now that we know what BPPV is, the top four causes might make a little more sense.
    The number one most common cause of BPPV is a blow to the head. This could range from a Mild bump to the head or could be from more serious head trauma. For some people it happens after a car accident. The sudden jarring of the head causes the calcium carbonate crystals to break free and start to move around in your inner ear canals. You wouldn’t necessarily know it at the time it happened but vertigo episodes may start to come on after a head injury.
    Another cause of BPPV is age. It’s a lot more common as people get older, especially after the age of 60. This could be due to degenerative changes to the inner ear that happen naturally as we age which could make it easier for an inner ear crystal to become dislodged. People with osteoporosis may be at higher risk and that is more common in older adults but the relationship between age and BPPV is not entirely clear. It’s also important Understand that BPPV occurs in all age groups.
    The 3rd cause for BPPV is having an ear or dental procedure. It’s not very common but sometimes after surgery on the ear or even just having dental work done can cause symptoms to start. Again, these are uncommon causes, it’s rare but possible.
    The fourth cause for BPPV is a viral infection. This one may actually be pretty common. Viruses can affect the inner ear, Causing changes in fluids and pressures and stirring up inflammation which may cause the inner ear particles to come loose. A study compared almost 500 people who had BPPV with those who didn’t. They tested for 8 different kinds of viruses and found that the BPPV group had higher levels of all but two of the viruses they tested for which shows a strong connection.
    Some other factors can be involved in developing BPPV, they may not be causes but will likely make you more susceptible. People who suffer migraines are more likely to get BPPV. Females and diabetics are also more likely to get BPPV. It’s not really well understood as to why but that is what the data shows. You probably can’t just stop being female or having migraines but you can do your best to manage your diabetes if you have it., which would likely help reduce your risk.
    I hope this video helps improve your understanding of BPPV. If you want to fix your BPPV on your own, check out my video titled Vertigo Cure: BPPV Self Treatment. In it I’ll show you the Carol Foster maneuver that can completely stop the dizziness even after doing it just one time! Some people will have to give it a few tries but it has helped thousands and thousands of people. Go check it out!

    I’m a 43yo female who is experiencing this BPPV symptoms for about 10 days.
    Normally I live a healthy life style, workout regularly no health issues and When I had the first spinning I thought I have brain tumour or something….:)
    Thank’s God today I found out the name of these symptoms…
    My symptoms are brief episodes of dizziness with moving the head, often when rolling over in bed or getting up in the morning, also feel nauseous between episodes of vertigo. Somedays are stronger someday very light … I did some of the movements but didn’t help much …, maybe I don’t do them correctly…
    I’ll try more tomorrow…
    Thank you doctor for taking your time and explaining it to ppl as me …., this way I won’t spend 5hours in the ER and to be sent home with a wrong diagnoses
    Thank you 🙏

      I’ve had severe BPPV a number of times, where I can’t walk, drive or function. I went to my doc., he knew nothing , but then came home & learned from a YT video how to get rid of it. So now I do the eye exercises when the vertigo is mild, preventing it from getting worse. If I ignore the early dizziness it will get much worse. Dehydration may be a factor, since I need to drink more water. The hip moving exercises didn’t work for me. The eye exercises are amazing, BUT, the worse the vertigo, the longer I need to spend doing them, but u can do them anywhere if feeling a bit off, like in the car.

    I woke one morning and could not even stand up without hanging on to something! I was spinning out of control. Diagnosed with Labyrinthitis the next couple of weeks were hell😢. BBPV May be benign but it severely affects your quality of life! I had a bad attack whilst at the Minnesota State Fair and the police believed I was drunk or affected by drugs! Luckily I was carrying a card from the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney explaining my condition!❤

    One thing that sets my bppv off is dehydration . My doctor told me he'd heard or read that lowering salt in your diet may help . So started looking at my salt intake and it was quite high . I try to limit salt in my diet now and stay hydrated. I now, rarely have a problem . Ive dealt with this for 10 plus years, I'm not positive the salt made the difference but I'm vastly better now . The dehydration was definitely a problem. The speed of the Cristal during treatment was noticeably slower and took longer for my world to stop spinning during treatment . It's been about 3 years since I lowered my salt intake. In the beginning I had a few episodes. And now nearly none . Just extremely light dizziness, mostly during hot weather and it goes away in a day or so with rehydration. Hopefully this helps someone.

      I believe this is what caused the extreme case of vertigo that I had yesterday. I hadn’t had as much water as I normally do and I had Mexican food which is of course salty. I woke up yesterday with a terrible episode that left me unable to even get out of the bed and in fact, I was still spinning in bed. That lasted most of the day. What a nightmare!

      White processed table salt can cause problems but not pink salt or Celtic salt which have their trace minerals still. Salt (sodium) is an electrolyte which helps the body retain hydration. Plain water is actually dehydrating as it just washes out your electrolytes.

    I recently realized I have an alcohol problem- I get vertigo really bad for a day or two after heavily drinking. The first couple times it happened I thought I was having a stroke. And I unfortunately am suffering from it right now. I can’t even make it from the bedroom to the kitchen without having to fall to my knees to protect myself from falling and hurting myself. Have had numerous episodes of BPPV which, thank God have responded to the Epley Maneuver. Initially treated by a caring PT co worker who is a balance specialist, I have successfully performed the Epley during subsequent episodes on myself. Although I have never read the reference, I am strongly convinced that my BPPV episodes were associated with alcohol consumption. BTW, I am 70, no longer drink and have had no more episodes. 🙏🏻. I shudder to think how many people suffer from BPPV and don’t realize how treatable it typically is.
    Unfortunately, many MD’s are not aware of the multiple maneuver treatment options.

      Hmmm…I’ve been dizzy for almost two months now. Done a bunch of tests thinking it was something more severe. Everything checked out. One thing I always mentioned is how I remember the exact moment it started. I rarely drink. Just socially. One night I drank a pint of crown relatively quick. Got a nice buzz. Went to sleep. Woke up early and went work a 12hr shift with a very mild hangover. Nothing major. Until the end of the shift I got extremely woozy out of nowhere. Which never happens. Always thought there was a connection there. I rarely drink but the day after drinking and having a hangover this starts??

    I started experiencing vertigo about a year and a half ago. After trying to deal with it on my own, I was finally seen for it. I was given a medication called meclizine and referred to PT. At the same time, my hemoglobin was continuously dropping. Every time I was checked over about a year, it was lower than the time before. My doctor put it together that I was becoming anemic due to a fibroid that I had and put me on iron supplements. I’ve since also had surgery to remove the fibroid and haven’t had any problems with vertigo for months. All of this is to say that if you’re not getting better like you should be, make sure to see about what else could be causing it.

I then got illnesses such as stomach illnesses and a UTI. My immune system was very poor as well. We were also in the midst of our winter. After the long stretches of working in retail on my feet, I had an injury. I fell on my coccyx. I couldn't walk that day. The next day I forced myself to go walking (I am a runner) to work the pain out. As a result after all this plus antibiotics for the UTI, I began with this positional vertigo and a motion sickness feeling in between. It has nothing to do with it being a vaccine, it’s literally just the virus itself. You can develop the same issues from exposure to either.

    Hello 👋 For the past 3 years I have been experiencing head rush / tight sensation, but not necessarily room spinning, as I come to a standing position that last a few seconds, yet very severe "internal spin" but not outward (room spinning, etc.) so bad that I hold my head, hold on to something, usually a wall, and feel like I have to sit back down again just to alleviate it. Is this also a symptom of BPPV and do you recommended giving your exercise a shot? Much thanks.

    I have had this on and off for about 20years plus.. I always get nausea tablets from the doctor. Recently I started doing Epley maneuver and it's help so much.. but I do suffer from this constantly, if I have a cold, have a sore ear or even if I get stressed out my back of my neck goes sore and I know I'm going to get dizzy spells soon after it.. I must get vertigo at least 10 times a year..
    Most days if I look up very quickly, I go dizzy... If I roll over to my left side in bed, my left side of my head.. I just go into a spin .
    So the Epley maneuver has came a big part of my life

      That’s not something I’ve seen before with BPPV. In doing a little research there is a case where an ear turning red was caused by vestibular migraine which is a different type of vertigo disorder.

    Not sure if it was vertigo but back in the late 80's, I bent down to while seated at a desk and immediately felt off balance. Was very weird feeling. Was pretty bad for the first few days but later was about 50% better for the next months. I had side effects for the next 5 or so years but mainly walking down a grocery aisle felt like I was walking tilted left when I was walking straight. I would have to use a cart. Never got diagnosed so not sure. Don't really notice it anymore 40 years later.

    My frozen shoulder had me sleeping on one side for the last 6 months. Woke up the other day and had the worst 5 hours of my life. The spinning and any movements even with my eyes closed were very traumatic. We tried Eply maneuver but was too overwhelmed to complete properly. Finally was able to very slowly roll over to other side (bad shoulder side but I didn't care at this point) and about 5 hours later began to stabilize. I have no idea if turning to other side provided relief or if the crystal exited on it's own. 4 days later doing much better!

It was my first year working with preschoolers during flu season and I was bombarded with germs. That was 8 years ago. I can't do the Epley because I get violently ill and get a weird intense headache afterwards so I have been sleeping on a wedge pillow with the bad ear up for the last several years. Vitamin D helps regulate inflammation and calcium balance, it’s also a hormone involved in many functions in the body. Taking it in the moment won’t necessarily stop a vertigo attack but taking it consistently over time which raises your blood levels of vitamin D will help reduce episodes.

    Hello! I am from finland and Ive had these symptoms for 2weeks now, daily, but nothing that I couldnt manage. Last week I took 3 days off and this week 1day, I should go back to work tomorrow. I have noticed long time ago that when I wear my headphones(safetygear), that my ears get sweaty, and the music that I listen is heavy on bass, could it be that the cause of my problems comes from my headphones? My mother had it and other family member too, so maybe it just runs in my blood.. im really scared of driving right now and work place has many nasty places to hit my head. So I have to be careful and not lift nothing too heavy. But yeah the actual thing is about my headphones and could they cause this.

    • @StronglifePhysiotherapy
      @StronglifePhysiotherapy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it is possible. Vibration can cause particles to come loose and enter the inner ear canals, which triggers vertigo with specific head movements. You may want to take a break from the music, lower the bass and/or the volume. But once the particles enter the inner ear canal you need to clear them to stop the vertigo. The technique in this video works really well: th-cam.com/video/wv66YvIyDy0/w-d-xo.html

      It can be episodic. Doing the half somersault maneuver will clear the crystal from the inner ear and relieve the symptoms but it is possible for another inner crystal to break free and cause symptoms to return. It’s definitely tiring and annoying but at least there is an effective way to manage it.

    Covid and then shingles on right side of my face that caused my eye to swell and ear to hurt about 4 months after covid was the culprit. Oh and throw in a hysterectomy so in the same time period. I've dealt with it for two years and olfactory hallucinations worsening migraines after. Vestibular pt has been amazing. Been a few months still working on it was almost completely resolved but then I had dehydration and a viral thing and it kind of went to my other ear. I have horizontal canal vertigo and nystagmus good times. Not. But I'm slowly getting my life back. So I just turned 41 when all that started happening. Prior to that I did piyo yoga you name it I did it. After I could barely bend down to get into the pyxis to get meds out at work or at home pick stuff off the floor.

      Yes, that is a picture of Lake Tahoe! It’s one of my places to go 😀. Do you go to Tahoe too or live close by?

    I had BPPV attack on 3rd March 2023 and after 42 days I got impatient and tried Canalith Repositioning which was successful. But now for last 34 days I am having residual dizziness which is quite uncomfortable. My Low Vitamin D ie 7ng/ml is the reason behind my BPPV hence I am taking Vitamin D injection, 5 gone and 1 more to go. My question how long I am going to experience residual dizziness?

    • @StronglifePhysiotherapy

      Yes, head trauma can definitely cause BPPV, but severe head trauma can cause other types of vertigo as well. Hope you're able to get relief!

    I have been experiencibg this lately. It does go away with the Epley maneuver, but I always wanted to know what causes it. Last night I went to bed and I was looking at my phone while laying on my back. I was looking down and down to my left shoulder for 30 minutes since I had my phone on my left hand. After 30 minutes I saw the video on my phone moving and I was like wth? I put it down and stood up ans everything moved. Lay down with my head looking at my right shoulder and everything started to move. It was horrible. I thought some how I hurt my neck, but that doesnt make sense because tody I did the Epley manuver and now it is all good. How can my possition have messed with the crystals?

    • @StronglifePhysiotherapy
      @StronglifePhysiotherapy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Certain head positions will make the crystals fall back into the canal and trigger vertigo attacks. Looking straight up or down, or hanging the head upside down or laying on your back with your head tilted back are all positions that will trigger more attacks. It’s best to avoid these positions for about a week after doing the Epley or half somersault maneuver.

    loose ear crystals floating around cause it. to fix it, do the epley maneuver.

    It’s December and viral infections really throw me off, but I went to the Dr and they told me I had vertigo. The vertigo is so strong it doesn’t let me sleep. But I’ll take a look on how to make it better.

      If it's BPPV, the half somersault maneuver is extremely effective and pretty simple to do on your own:

      @StronglifePhysiotherapy not if you're old and you have trouble getting up off the floor!

      You can do the same maneuver standing or sitting as long as you get your head in the same position. I don’t have videos on TH-cam for those but I do in my BPPV program: bppvcured.com
