I’m moving to Portland in a couple weeks. I kind of just went out on a whim and decided to make the move without visiting. I did however visit a few weeks ago to apartment hunt and I agree that everyone was very friendly and willing to help. And yes there are a ton of homeless but I’m currently in LA where there is also a lot of homeless. My biggest fear is the gloom and lack of diversity. But I think if I put myself out there I’ll find the right set of people to hang out with. Your video helped relieve some anxiety I’ve had with the move so thank you :)
Wow Lexi! That is amazing that you’re moving here on a whim. I think those spontaneous urges can usually lead us to great results. Also, coming from a big city like LA, you should do great out here. I’m coming from NY and I feel like that big city feel has prepared me for anything that Portland can throw my way. The rainy/gloomy days and lack of diversity are certainly something to get used to but you’re absolutely right. Just put yourself out there and ppl will attract themselves to you. It’ll be easy to make friends here and they’ll distract you from the gloominess. Wishing you all the best with the move and feel free to reach out if you ever need anything
Just moved to Portland from The Bay Area in CA! Very different vibe, it’s definitely a city every one needs to experience. We moved out here on a whim. Felt like we belonged here after visiting, and moved. Hearing about the violence does make you believe you are in an unsafe place. BUT- I have family in Stockton,CA- Modesto,CA and for 6 years I live in Fresno,CA. In other words - as you get older you recognize that there are people in need, on drugs, and straight up angry- everywhere. Most of these folks are white. For a POC my view is DONT START NO STUFF, WONT BE NO STUFF. Lol, I feel you on the being brown aspect. I definitely felt looked at and treated some type of way coming here. I am NOT In CA anymore. Today this random white dude stopped in the middle of the street and stared at me for a good 50 seconds. Super random hasn’t happened to me here yet- that was unsettling- especially because you can’t throw down here without getting arrested. YES, if you fight here, every party involved goes to jail. Stupidest shit ever. Anyways. Portland is cool. Still discovering everything , I stay in South waterfront, it’s a whole different vibe, I don’t see homeless people out here at all, I think it’s because there is a hospital and several retirement communities they can’t be here ? ICE is down the street , that’s interesting lmao. If you need a homie to kick it with, my husband and I are down !
Couldn’t have said it better. The problems in Portland exist around the world. I’ve seen homeless people and junkies everywhere that I’ve lived. They may be more frequent here but it’s nothing new. And if you’re able to look past those issues, it’s a great city with a lot to offer. And most definitely. I’m not too far from the waterfront. Would love to meet more newbies in Portland
Dude thank you so much for these videos and the update videos, I’m a POC currently living in California and I’m thinking of moving to Portland, Oregon since I know it’s sort of a mix of the city life and outdoors activities. Probably the one thing I’m worried about is the lack of Mexican culture compared to here in California. I love my Mexican culture and I definitely don’t want to lose that, but other than that Portland looks like a perfect place for my lifestyle
Thanks for tuning in! That loss of culture is a huge issue. I’m sure you’ll be able to find a Mexican community out here but it probably just isn’t as big as where you are now. But Portland definitely has the best of both worlds mixed in with some other things lol
Welcome to Portland, man. I moved here 11 years ago from the Bay Area in California and I still love it here. I also used to live in New York, so I totally get what you're saying.
@@endthedrugwartoday Arent you a little gatekeeper ,that’s Un-American of you and unconstitutional go to China or Russia with that mentality you sorry excuse for an American .
lol idk if I can reveal that information. I’ve already been found by too many people but I can tell you a few other cool property spaces out here: The Yard The Sutton Park Avenue West Gossamer
I just packed up a few boxes and mailed them to myself. Actually still have a couple at my mom’s place in NY. Once I found an apartment and got approved, the packing began and then I flew to Portland. My boxes got here maybe a day or 2 later
It’s been interesting. I’ve definitely had my fill on Portland but still a lot of cool things in this city that I think people would appreciate despite what holds it back
lol there’s very little night life compared to other cities I’ve lived in. You still have some bars opened late and there are a few clubs but there isn’t something happening on every block like in NY 😔
Oh wow. I’m coming from the East coast myself. It’s quite a change but there’s a lot to like about Portland. Best wishes and hope you enjoy Rose City if you do get transferred
im moving to portland next week chile. I def am concerned about the Black scene there lmaoooo i heard there wasn't many black people. Thats something i'll have to deal with but thank you! I've been looking for black people to talk about portland for awhile.
My job wants to relocate me to Lake Oswego this spring/summer. I am a nervous wreck right now because all of my family is in Texas where I currently am right now. I also have to remind myself that I don't have any kids and I'm not married so I should at least give this an opportunity. I'm just worried that I won't be able to find a great church home and a good circle of friends. I'm looking at flights right now to fly out there this weekend and view the city. Thank you for this video!
Lake Oswego is pretty chill. Further away from all the craziness of the city. Not much excitement but definitely a good place to settle down I’m not sure how the churches are there but I think you’ll be able to get a good feel for Lake Oswego during your visit
What’s your experience with the healthcare over there? & do you feel pretty safe? One of my biggest worries is about property crimes, like car break ins
@@MouseOnFeet How much yearly would you say a single person should want to make a year in order to afford everything and be able to save.. Spacious 1-2 bedroom in a low crime area?
I'm thinking of moving to Portland, and the lack of diversity thing you said worries me a lil bit. I'm half black and half white (I oftentimes get mistaken for Hispanic), and am currently in a town where there's only a handful of poc. In Portland, is it really not that diverse? Like, do you feel out of place? My biggest issue with where I'm living is that I feel out of place and kind of lonely. Is it primarily white?
If diversity is what you’re looking for, Portland definitely isn’t the ideal place but it’s an interesting city. The lack of color hasn’t really made me feel out of place yet
Hey so question- I’m also planning to move to Portland next month (June) but I can’t find anything that cheap that you mentioned (anything less than 1,000 or 1,100 a month. Do you know anywhere on the top of your head that you would recommend me looking into to apply at? Thanks for the video! Looking forward to being settled in there
Honestly, I think that type of pay rate is disrespectful anywhere in America but you can actually survive on that type of income in Portland. There’s no sales tax so you do end up saving on regular purchases and housing is much cheaper here than in other areas I’ve lived. Maybe you just have to live frugally and try to save up as much as you can early on until you start earning more
ayy just moved to portland recently too! My biggest issue is definitely entertainment, like bars or random hippie shit seems to be the only moves half the time. Got tickets to isaiah rashad tho lol, some actual heat for once
I'm from Brooklyn but have been living in Phoenix for 7 years. I'm moving to Oregon but haven't really decided where exactly. I was thinking about Bend but it may be too isolated for me. How do you still feel about Portland? I love that the public transportation is reliable like ours back home especially since I don't drive!!!
Oh yeah, Bend is a bit out there for me. I feel like you would need a car out there. Portland is convenient in terms of getting around without a car. The addicts can be annoying but if you’re in like Hillsboro, you’ll see a bit less of them
@@MouseOnFeet are you still in Portland? Have you done an updated video that I missed? You spoke about food do they still have a downtown supermarket and what is the location?
@@MouseOnFeet regarding food trucks what's the most you like to spend per meal? What I'm saying is do you have a food budget? (I think that since you're from New York you might have a different standard of course it's all relevant to your level of income)
I feel like everything is more expensive than I’d like it to be but the food is usually good so I don’t mind it too much but if I’m just buying food for myself, then depending on the truck, I’m looking at $8 - $14 give or take
planning on moving to Portland next month or so from DC. I was looking more into the pearl district though, I visited last year and I enjoyed it along with the vibe. I know people complain about it but I’m from Harlem New York, safe to say I’ve seen and heard of worst lol
Yeah, the Pearl district is really fun. Lots of great food over there. It’s crazy, idk if I was just too jaded to all the weird things in NY but it just feels so much more in your face here. But you’re probably right
I’m in SF right now and thinking about moving to Portland. Do you plan on getting a car? Also I’m trying to figure out what the downtown/ office work culture is like, since I would likely be looking into tech companies. I’d be interested to know your thoughts if you have any on that. Last question :) but what actually made you want to move to Portland? Was it to leave NYC or did you feel a pull there?
I think the culture will vary by company but overall, I don't believe the working lifestyle here is as traditional and rigid as it was back in New York. Not quite sure how it is in SF. I do want to get a car at some point down the line but it's so inexpensive taking transit that I may just wait it out as long as possible. Leaving New York was a huge part because I hated to see all my money go into rent (for such a small place) and Portland provided an answer to that with having a much lower cost of living. But I also visited Portland for a few days before making the decision so that I could really get a feel of the city and it won me over. Great food, friendly people, easy commutes and an opportunity to save money.
Where you go get your chicken and waffles 🧇 from out here brah? I live out here , been out here for like 3 years...never found a chickens and waffles spot yet...and alot of stuff you said is accurate
i think that portland actually has a lot of entertainment, it has a really vibrant local music scene that is really fun and authentic, i live in eugene but some of the portland bands come down here.
Very true. I’ve been meeting some really cool artists here in the past few months. There are some shows even here in Portland but just not like how it was in NY. I’ve gotta check out Eugene some day too. Heard it’s pretty cool out there
@@MouseOnFeet it's like mini Portland with more old authentic hippies and college students and all the homeless people have pet dogs and play guitar all day with their grateful dead hoodies. Very lovely town
There’s some neat apartments in Northwest Portland and Hillsboro. Downtown has some cheaper apartment options and convenient placement but you may have to deal with more of the homeless population
I always enjoy a nice reset. Portland is a cool city and while there’s a lot to like there are also some really big negatives. But if you visit first and get a feel for the city, you’ll be able to determine if it’s somewhere you actually want to live
Ayyee I’m moving fron long island,NY I just got a job at Amtrak in the union and moving the next month should I live outside of the city and how easy is it to make friends there?
Congrats on the new gig and welcome to Portland. I'd definitely say that you can find nicer living arrangements outside of the city but it may cost more as well. In regard to making friends, it's pretty easy here. The people are extremely nice and aren't shy about starting conversations.
We love Portland! We go every year, but have been hesitant since becoming parents to a beautiful baby girl. We still would love to move there in the next couple of years but super hesitant since the tweeker movement started. My question is did u find a job out there? Was it hard? How’s the art scene? My husband is a Pop Art Artist. Thanks for your time!
Hi Bibi! Thank you so much for watching and congrats on your new baby girl. I was able to find a job pretty easily and a lot of companies I interviewed with seemed eager to hire. They would even text or email back immediately to applications I submitted late at night. The art scene is pretty vibrant here. I know there’s opportunities to sell your creations at the Saturday Market and throwing your own art shows (like I’m used to in NY) could go over really well here since there isn’t too much of a night life scene
I saw some videos of that online during quarantine but since I’ve moved out here, I’ve yet to see any protests. However, there are still businesses that have yet to re-open.
Screen Door is definitely the standout thus far. It’s big for a reason. Can’t lie, I’ve stayed away from pizza in Portland because I don’t want to be disappointed. It’s very hard to match the pizza in NY
@@Cyborg1170 you literally have to find them but it’s Oregon a predominantly Caucasian state where minorities sticks to their own neighborhoods essentially but if your downtown Portland you’ll see a wide range of every color not like Seattle at all where we are all mixed in and the main focus is class status not race
I really want to move to Portland, currently live in SF and I’m tired of spending so much money for a run down apartment. I also just need a change of pace but I know no one in Portland so I’m scared and I don’t have a car and don’t want one. I’m also hesitant about walking around and seeing no one that looks like me but idk I think I would enjoy it
I completely understand. That sounds very similar to my situation. I didn’t know anyone moving out here but if you’re pro-active and open to starting conversations, you’ll meet some great people. And the people in Portland are really friendly. But initially there may be some lonely days. There’s a great transit system that’s made it really easy for me to get around Portland thus far without a car. The lack of diversity is something I’m still battling with. I’m just not used to being the only one of my kind in a given area for so long but over time, you can meet more people like you (they’re here somewhere) and connect with them.
I like your TH-cam videos. Welcome to Portland Oregon. I moved here 5 years ago from Atlanta Georgia. I agree with you on the homeless situation and the junkies. It seems to me they have taken over the city. Yes,there is a lack of diversity here,my friend who is black pointed that out to me. I felt the same way when I moved to Atlanta years ago, especially being Atlanta Georgia is a predominantly black city. Five years ago when I moved to Portland it seemed like a great move for me but now with our homeless crises and the horrendous amount of junkies on the street and public transportation, I feel like maybe I should move out of the city.
You move to portland when portland is. Bust now. … the way portland is now it wasn’t like that back then… I use to live in portland I had to leave. The city has change a lot. A whole lot.. stay safe and stay safe..
Thanks Ricky. Yeah, people have been telling me it changed a lot, especially during the pandemic. Still seems like a chill place though and the people are really nice
@@MouseOnFeet yea the ppl are nice. But it’s not the same. The prices of living is out rages. North portland has been price out. If you know what I mean.. and southeast the whole Gresham area bad… the homeless population has never been that bad. And downtown has nvr been that bad also. It usually last like 3-4 months and that’s it. But downtown has been going on like it is. For over a year. And it has no plan on stopping now….. be safe and stay safe.. it’s a lot of racist ppl that in portland… idk if you hear about that stabbing on the max train a couple years back. Yea I was on that train… it was all bad…. So ones again. Stay safe and be safe
hey buddy, great video - im gonna be moving to Portland for a role in the retail sports space (adidas) - any suggestions on what parts of Portland are safest/best to live , and any thoughts on what is a good salary range to live comfortably in Portland, will be coming from Canada so wanted to hear what parts of portland + what salary you feel is needed to comfortably live in portland, Thanks and appreciate the help (please ignore my account name haha)
Lol love the account name. I was born in Toronto so I feel the same. Congrats on the Adidas role. I think Northwest Portland and Hillsboro are really good areas to live in. You may need to be making at least 35,000 or have roommates to live comfortably and still be able to save money
@@MouseOnFeet awesome, thanks bro! I will let adi know that Northwest and Hillsboro are my top choices - ok, I thought you were going to say something like 100 k USD haha, thanks for the info man, I really appreciate it!
I am from New York also. I lived in south east Portland though. I rented a room for 475 a month and the same room would have costed me AT LEAST 16-1700 in downtown Manhattan. Maybe even more man. Honestly I’m being generous with that number. Probably like 2200 actually. But I lived Portland . I lived in New York City paying an arm and a leg . I came back for my daughter. I can’t wait for her to get older so I can go back. Luckily I have a car. I’m a grateful New Yorker. Public transit is awesome man. Always parking everywhere’s
I'm from upstate NY. I lived in the Bronx for about a yr also. I moved to Portland in 07. At first I loved it, only real draw back at first was the pizza. NY style is incredibly hard to find and when you do find it it's mediocre and super expensive. Now that im older, have kids and a wife. I've climbed the corporate ladder and wages here just haven't kept up with housing prices. Yes, a 1 bedroom apartment is affordable and by west coast standards even the homes are affordable....but it comes down to how much you can afford. Portland has some of the lowest inventories in the country which makes rent more expensive than it should be. Wages just don't match. Now let's say you manage to make good money as a high skill worker or whatever.....ok, now do a Google search for large companies in pdx. You're gonna see Nike, Intel, Columbia sportswear, and that's about it. There just aren't that many jobs here. Sure it's got a good economy, but it's not a diversified portfolio and few big corporations here that are needed to make enough money to afford a house here. Food is above average but COVID destroyed pdx. We specialized in higher end restaurants and foot trucks. Not a whole lot of true grab and go comfort food. All the real artists have left the city for cities with less COVID restrictions. The few that have remained just don't offer the same level of impressiveness as they once did. The local artisan phase is dying. Also Portland doesn't have soul food, Chinese food, or BBQ. You'll find restaurants that say they make it, but you will definitely be disappointed in these 3 specifically. Pizza here is awful but you will have an easier time finding that over Chinese, bbq, and soul food. I think it's just because Portland is largely white and health conscious. Beas chicken is good though.....chicken sandwich is dry, but bone in is great. The coast is pretty but unusable. I like the coast but to drive 1-2hrs to go to the beach and not be able to swim sucks. Seafood also isn't much of a thing surprisingly. Everything on the coast is mediocre, out dated, and same frozen crap you get in the city. Unless all you wanna do is hike and camp, it's boring af. There are a couple small mom and pop amusement parks, but it's basically like a small fair. Nothing impressive at all. Theme parks in the pnw just aren't a thing really. Out door activities are it. And those you absolutely need to drive too. Max won't take you to those. As a fellow east coaster the biggest draw back is family. After 15yrs Im done with the isolation and wanting to go back. When I moved here I figured "I can't just fly back to visit family". But reality is it's not affordable or realistic to pay for 4 people to fly often enough. You will miss family. Friends are hard to make here. Not because people are rude, but because people are introverted to a detriment. They're flaky and pretentious. You can walk around naked and no one would think you're weird at all, but if you have any views that lean to even the moderate right you will be ostracized.
Portlandia. Visiting portland for the first time later this month! Scouting it as a potential place to move! Not Portalnd per say but the general Portland area
A lot of the concert halls in Portland are being attacked for using old buildings not up to code. The best theaters are the small ones I would look for those shows over main modatheater shows. If you are looking for more of a black community in Portland their are sections of Portland that have higher than normal people of color. Look for local business and ask who the owner is and you can start getting your Portland roots.
Hello thank you so much for your video and your inside about Portland Oregon. Great content! I am set to move there in March for job opportunity. I do have a question. Do you find you see alot of snakes, scorpions or spiders? I have a phobia. It's pretty bad. I always have panic attacks. This may not seem significant fir others, but for me it absolutely is a reality. Thank-you in advance!
Hey Quenisha, thanks for tuning in and wishing you all the best with your move. I personally haven’t come in contact with any snakes or scorpions while I’ve been in Portland but I know they’re here. Spiders on the other hand, I have seen quite a few of
This video is great, I'm about to move to Portland in a few weeks. I'm a nervous wreck & I was worried about meeting other young black professionals but this gave a good view of what to look forward to.
I tell everyone I kno or meet. Who plans on moving to portland… visit first.. plz.. portland is not like how it use to be…. Use to be like 5-6 years ago….
It’s still dope. Feels like there are a lot of individuals here. YES there are homeless people, yes, it rains, yes, it’s different and OH YES is there mainly white people. BUT there are hella Asians too, Indian people, POC’s. It isn’t the bay, it isn’t NY but it’s worth coming and living here. I moved here in July, and I like it. My husband is Nigerian and I’m Mexican, we own a business and love to meet new people! If you are here now dude hit us up ✊🏼 truth be told- you create the environment you want, if people get off on making the world a miserable place, that’s their cross to bear, let the cunty racists die off and the people trying to make a Portland a happier place shine 🌺
@@Alexxxpdx it’s always the ones who is not black that say something stupid. Portlandia Love the video! Welcome to Portland, man. Super glad you are here! Can't wait to see your other videos! A video idea - because I would love to see someone do this - is a pizza showdown. Star (deep dish) vs. Bellagios vs. SFNY vs. Ranch PDX vs. Mississippi Delta vs. 1905 vs. (etc. etc. too many to list)
That’s definitely a big concern. I never went to school in Portland but I can imagine that they don’t offer the most diverse group of students. That being said, I’ve attending schools where I was one of the only black students and I think in some cases it can build personality and make you a champion for your culture.
I’m a Portland resident for 21 years and planning to leave. In the last 4 years Portland has completely changed from the image it used to have. Crime is absolutely rampant. Just about every business and restraunt has a boarded up window from being robbed. Property crime is everywhere. Your car WILL get broken into at some point and car and bike theft is rampant with chop shops operating openly all over town. It’s happened twice to me now. Violent crime, carjackings are up and we had more murders in 2021 than the last 40 years. Drive-bys and turf shootouts happen every weekend now. Gang task forces were all disbanded during BLM and police response times are at around an hour - even after 20 min waits for 911. They do not respond to property crimes anymore. The force is down to about 1/3 normal numbers after a year of protests and they can’t even hire cops here. The DA doesn’t prosecute property or drug crimes. Portland had mild, long running gang problems but now they operate openly. Drug legalization has created a magnet for homeless and mentally ill on our streets everywhere. I call in at least one big homeless camp on fire under an overpass or interstate greenway a week now. Assaults from drug addicts and mentally ill are way up - many businesses have to deal with openly dangerous, armed homeless people defecating in doorways and assaulting staff. The famous restaurants and businesses are leaving and shuttering at an even faster rate in 2022 - not due to covid but because of the crime and a rash of new taxes passed this year. Tech companies are using covid to quietly close downtown offices and move. Schools are also some of the worst in the country. All of my friends pulled their kids out to private schools - check out any of the Portland Public School audits to read more - it’s horrific. Most people leave Portland when they have kids. Taxes are also increasing with new city income taxes on top of 9-10% state income tax. In short, if you lived in LA or New York, this probably seems fine. But we’re almost as bad as those places with only 600,000 residents.
These are great points. Thank you for watching and for chiming in. The drug x homeless problem is huge here. No employees of any store should have to deal with the issues stemming from that and it sucks to see them have to be security here. I don’t have much to say about the police issues because that just sounds like how they respond to us in black neighborhoods. Definitely not a place I’d like to raise kids though. If you’re from a big city, it’s a good opportunity to come and live somewhere cheap and save up then move somewhere else when you’re financially ready or ready to start a family.
@@MouseOnFeet Agree. That’s the saddest part - that it’s gone from a place I love to one all my friends say is no place to raise kids and moved away. I’ll be joining them soon as I plan on leaving in the next 3 months. I wish you the best, but I do not see Portland recovering for many years - if it does at all. It was a great run for my time, but I’m leaving. Good luck and be safe.
Portlandia Welcome! Moved here 2 years ago from suburban Florida. While there is a lot to like about the city, I feel they get outweighed by the cons myself. I live 15 mins away in Beaverton so thankfully I don’t have to be immersed in it even though I’m in the city multiple times per week. I don’t know a single soul I’ve met who was born and raised here that thinks Portland has improved over time, quite the opposite. Typical with the lenient policies encouraged by a certain political demographic, tweakers are taking over downtown. I’ve had a bottle smashed against my car stopped at a red light and my window broken and items stolen while parked. I manage a fleet company and not a week goes by I don’t have a car stolen, a customer robbed of their car at gunpoint (mostly in southeast), a customer reporting vandalism and theft from their car or the catalytic converters and/ or wheels stolen off one of my vehicles. One of my locations has been broken into twice in a year. The district attorneys office doesn’t prosecute a lot of crimes, which castrates the police’s ability to arrest. Downtown streets are littered with human feces. Urine. Tents. Trash. Abandoned cars. A friends wife runs a daycare downtown and when they used to feel safe enough to walk their kids during recess, they had to scan their walk paths first for dirty needles left behind. Homeless camps on the outskirts, stolen and stripped cars boats and trailers galore. The lack of racial diversity is disappointing however everywhere you turn Portland seems to have the loudest voices for racial justice which is ironic to me. I find it amusing the comments from those who have moved from large metropolis areas like SF, LA, NYC… yeah it’s not bad if that’s what you’re used to.
Marty! Thanks for chiming in and shedding light on what it’s like to be a business owner here in Portland. That definitely sounds like a headache to have to deal with on a weekly basis. Hopefully something changes soon and we clean up the streets. Can’t say it’s a place I’d want my kids growing up in with what they could be exposed to
@@MouseOnFeet Thanks Mouse hope you are adjusting well so far. The city and landscape are beautiful, most of the people are nice, but yes there’s a lot of work to do for improvement!
@@martz0r I am black. But I haven't found many other moving to Portland. Is Beaverton mostly white. I also came from Florida, sold my house for all cash, and was able to buy with all cash here in Portland. But I see 98% white people all day every day, I hate it.
One of the drawbacks. It’s Portland Oregon. 🤣🤣🤣 Seriously. Good luck out there man. Take it over 🔥🔥🔥🔥 I have several friends who live out there. If you ever need an attorney, a superfund environmentalist, writer or general nice people to meet. Let me know. If you are people “like me.” 👀😳💀 #immexican #igetit
I've lived here most of my life and it is not as cool as it was a decade ago be ause everyone and their sister moved here. Rent skyrocketed, people are everywhere it is so overcrowded. I can see how someone from NY would think this is great, but as someone from here it's not great. It's obnoxious. Can't enjoy the great outdoor without passing lots of people on trails or driving through bumper to bumper traffic. The homeless situation is insane and if you need police assistance, GOOD LUCK! They flat out do not respond. Portland sucks now. I wish people would stop glamorizing it and drawing people in. 🙄 Oh and don't forget it is legal for homeless people to camp in any public property, I know so many people with bum camps right outside their front door. Needles littering the streets, property crime has sky rocketed and things have only gotten worse now that drugs are essentially legal to possess.
I anticipate that you won't be living in Portland for very long, since you seem far too normal and sane. Once you get over the masquerade that the people put up, you'll see that the niceness is extremely shallow and your relationships will also be just as shallow. The bums and tweakers will eat away at you. If it's not the 5th time your car is broken into, it might be the knife attack you just barely escape from, the drug addict sexually pleasuring himself with a metal rod in the middle of the day in downtown, or just watching people shoot heroin on the street as you casually stroll by with your boo. There is definitely not a lot of black people in the whitest big city in America. You can find pockets of black owned business like Po'Shines in North Portland, Kenton neighborhood. The owner is GOOD people and his food is amazing. Good luck out there my guy, after living there my whole life I had to move away to be in a place where I would actually want to raise a family.
Thank you for giving me a real take on Portland. I appreciate this one so much and I’m sorry if you’ve lived through all or any of those experiences. But happy to hear that you’ve moved on to a better setting for you and your family.
The biggest problem I've had with Portland is with the unavailability of medical care. If you require immediate treatment, you'll need to go somewhere else.
Really? That’s a great thing to bring up. I’ve been fortunate enough not to need any medial assistance but I’m glad to get your perspective on it before that day comes
lol people seem to mention those negatives a lot but I’ve yet to see any of it (not to say that it doesn’t happen) but there’s so many other aspects of Portland to shine a light on
Apparently the crime rate here is pretty high. From what I’ve heard, there can be break in’s to cars by the homeless. I don’t have a car but that is still alarming
Hi neighbor! Welcome to Portland. Thank you for moving here, you seem really awesome and genuine. Have a good one.
Thanks Amanda! 😇 Glad to be here. It’s been really cool so far. Still a lot to explore
I left in 16 after a decade . I spent 25 percent of my life there
I am a desert man and I am in Vegas now
Move to Vancouver across the river. Portland is bum town
I would agree about the video relieving sum anxiety… I won’t be too far behind
@@NH-dc4zr 😂 why you say?
Thanks… thinking about coming that way
@@MouseOnFeet thanks like your pov thinking about moving that way

Thanks! I’m thinking about moving there and this helped.
Awesome! Glad I could provide some insight on moving to Portland. Thanks for watching
Welcome to Portland! I love when more of our people move here! its a great city with tons to do
Thank you so much! I’ve been having a blast. Hopefully more of ours choose to come out this way
I bet you don’t walk around downtown at night in that such a great city
I walk 3 miles across the entirety of downtown every night for the past year and have never once had a problem.lol
Welcome to Portland, man. I moved here 11 years ago from the Bay Area in California and I still love it here. I also used to live in New York, so I totally get what you're saying.

My job wants to relocate me to Lake Oswego this spring/summer. I am a nervous wreck right now because all of my family is in Texas where I currently am right now. I'm just worried that I won't be able to find a great church home and a good circle of friends. I'm looking at flights right now to fly out there this weekend and view the city. What’s your experience with the healthcare over there? & do you feel pretty safe? One of my biggest worries is about property crimes, like car break ins

Income wise, how does a 15 or 20/hr job suffice in pdx? Can you get by and even enjoy it on 20/hr?
Honestly, I think that type of pay rate is disrespectful anywhere in America but you can actually survive on that type of income in Portland.
There’s no sales tax so you do end up saving on regular purchases and housing is much cheaper here than in other areas I’ve lived.
Maybe you just have to live frugally and try to save up as much as you can early on until you start earning more
$20 hr is the minimum to survive

I'm from Brooklyn but have been living in Phoenix for 7 years. I'm moving to Oregon but haven't really decided where exactly. I was thinking about Bend but it may be too isolated for me. How do you still feel about Portland? I love that the public transportation is reliable like ours back home especially since I don't drive!!!

planning on moving to Portland next month or so from DC.
But you’re probably right
How is the job market? If someone is on ssi can they still work?
I guess it depends on which industry you’re in. Companies looking for content creators here do seem more eager to hire than those in New York
There’s most likely a limit to how much you can collect with SSI but can’t lie, I don’t know much about that 😅
I’m in SF right now and thinking about moving to Portland.
@@MouseOnFeet that is so helpful, and I feel really similarly about the culture. Thank you so much for answering my questions!

Theres always been tweekers here and all over Oregon really. Its pretty bad in Salem and all over and in the Washington region as well.
a con is theres about a 10% chance you'll get mugged everytime you go outside.. closer to 40% late night.

There’s a great transit system that’s made it really easy for me to get around Portland thus far without a car.
The lack of diversity is something I’m still battling with. I’m just not used to being the only one of my kind in a given area for so long but over time, you can meet more people like you (they’re here somewhere) and connect with them.

Yes! The cost of living is so much cheaper in Portland. Rent in NY is highway robbery
Compared to NYC ?? Any place is a huge upgrade lol 😂
Welcome to Portland!!!!!!
Thank you so much! 😇😇
I live in Beaverton, Hillsboro area i don't go to portland to many crazy people

A lot of the concert halls in Portland are being attacked for using old buildings not up to code. The best theaters are the small ones I would look for those shows over main modatheater shows. If you are looking for more of a black community in Portland their are sections of Portland that have higher than normal people of color. Look for local business and ask who the owner is and you can start getting your Portland roots.

Like let the racists die… apparently you wasn’t in portland when the cop shot the blk guy… and the when the white supremacists tried to kill the 2 blk girls on the max train… so please don’t talk that shit. Portland is a city that was built for blk pple not to live there. Or be there at all… if you don’t believe me. Google it. Matter of face TH-cam it. It’s a whole section.. TF is wrong with y’all… smh gets some Years up under your belt before you start talking about how much of a wonderful city portland is.. you don’t even know why NE the way how it is. Or why mostly the black got push out and move to Beaverton.. smh
@@DashBorad_P do you live in portland 🤔
Please don't move here

Love the video! Welcome to Portland, man. Super glad you are here! Can't wait to see your other videos!
A video idea - because I would love to see someone do this - is a pizza showdown. Star (deep dish) vs. Bellagios vs. SFNY vs. Ranch PDX vs. Mississippi Delta vs. 1905 vs. (etc. etc. too many to list)
Jeremy! Thank you for watching. That’s a great idea. I’ll definitely explore what Portland pizza has to offer soon.
Thanks for the suggestions
I wonder why it's so affordable now? What a mystery.
Am planning on moving there but concerned about diversity in schools there. I would not like my son to be the only back kid in school.

Welcome!
Seriously. Good luck out there man. Take it over 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I have several friends who live out there. If you ever need an attorney, a superfund environmentalist, writer or general nice people to meet. Let me know.
If you are people “like me.” 👀😳💀
#immexican #igetit
😂😂😂 can always use a good attorney. Thanks a bunch man
I've lived here most of my life and it is not as cool as it was a decade ago be ause everyone and their sister moved here.
Say fam i new here to stay downtown close to 21
Welcome to Portland! How are you liking it so far?
Portland is best only for younger folks who love the outdoors. That simple
Lol people out here surely do love being outdoors. In more ways than one
Portlandia!!!
Thank you so much for watching!
I found it surprising when you said there aren’t many black people. Because, where I live, we have tons of black people
“tons of black people” that’s sounds like Atlanta lol. What part of Portland are you in? Pmo
The D Lil x Mouse sucks colab gonna be crazy
Lol I’ll trade him a verse for a Blazers contract
Me too I live portland
Welcome fellow portlander :)
😇 Thanks a bunch Tyler! Glad to be here
Relax your arms bruh...its alright.
😭😭😭
Portlandia!!

Very accurate! Been here almost a year, lots of white ppl but for the most part people are nice
Portland is,, cool . A video about Portland that is just complaining about the homeless and gun violence. Thanks. 😎
lol people seem to mention those negatives a lot but I’ve yet to see any of it (not to say that it doesn’t happen) but there’s so many other aspects of Portland to shine a light on
Is the crime really getting worse that’s what I’m worried about
Apparently the crime rate here is pretty high. From what I’ve heard, there can be break in’s to cars by the homeless.
I don’t have a car but that is still alarming
It has definitely increased since the pandemic started, but it has in a lot of big cities. We are still one of the safer ones.
@@ChicagoMike97 thanks
😂😂😂😂please tell me you have black friends that are really from Portland, we gotta link when I come back into town lol
lol can’t lie, most of the black people I’ve met here in Portland are transplants from other cities like myself
I JAST MOVE TO OREGON TO IN 3 DAYS SO AM NOT NICE SO PEOPLE DONT LIKE ME IN OREGON
Welcome to Oregon! People are pretty nice here. If you have good intentions, you’ll do fine
