I can’t comprehend why one would watch a video advocating to live in Portland, while having nothing good to say about it…. I guess it’s all perspective.
I lived there for almost 4 years because of a good paying job. But the crime is ridiculous. Anything less than someone almost dying the police don’t come. Had my car broken into 4 times, one time they tried to steal it but failed. Thieves tried to break into my apartment twice while I was home. And not to mention the racist people I had to deal with on almost a daily basis.
I lived in the area decades ago, and sometimes I really miss it. If I ever moved back, I'd find a place in Clark County. Vancouver, Washington, known locally as "The Couve" has a beautiful waterfront that's only 9 miles from the one downtown, and Vancouver is kind of like Portland's "mini-me" in a lot of ways, which means you enjoy the amenities of the city, while still feeling a small town vibe.
Sadly it no longer has a small town feel anymore. Lots of homeless camps everywhere. Open drug use, crime. Homes are 500K to start. Lack of primary care physicians.
Let's not forget the Public Transportation in Portland is hiring like Trimet (Bus/Train system of Portland with a hiring bonus of $7500), Uber, Lyft, Taxis, Veterans Affairs Motor Vehicle Operator, and C-Tran (Vancouver WA public bus & paratransit Operators)
@@sketchypeoplepdx How they doing there. TriMet is a disaster to work for nowadays. I spent almost 30 years there working for the ungrateful city dwellers and the incompetent management of the company. They will fire people for the stupidest things

Port of Portland is closing its container business - or rather the shipping companies are - because it’s become too expensive for them to make the trip up the Columbia River when they can just disembark at Port of Tacoma and truck the goods down.
@scottgrohs5940 The container business at terminal 6 is in trouble, but the port as a whole, especially the export side, is doing OK, especially considering that the port is 100 miles inland.
I want to thank you for giving a different, fuller perspective of Portland other than “crime infestation.” We certainly have problems here, but I live in the downtown area and serve the marginalized people in transitional housing. Other than avoiding certain areas at night, it’s not as bad as people claim.

I have a weird question about the perks of Washington income tax… is that a real thing? Could you live in Vancouver but work for a Portland business and still have your income tax? Or is it that you can life in Portland and work in Washington for no income tax? Or would you have to both live and work in Washington? My friends and I were talking about moving to Oregon vs Washington and that was a huge thing we were stumped on
I cannot give tax advice, but my understanding & what I've seen with clients that relocate is that you have to either 1) live & work in WA 2) live in WA & work remotely or 3) live in WA & have a hybrid position where you only pay tax for the days you work in OR but the days you work remote in WA don't incur state income taxes. Please contact me if you have more questions at 360.818.4438 and consult your tax professional or I can recommend some for you :)
I live in SW Washington and I work for a general contractor so, depending on what project I'm working on I physically work in both Oregon and Washington. When I'm working in Oregon, I take a $120 hit on my paycheck every week! And most of the time I am working on the Oregon side of the river because the majority of the metro area is in Oregon. So this means over $5,000 a year goes to the state of Oregon and when I file my taxes I end up getting back from the state of Oregon about $500! The other thing that videos like this don't mention is, for those of us that live in SW Washington But commute over to the Portland side for work, you have to cross the Columbia River and there are only two bridges that cross, and one of them is nearly 100 years old and completely beyond capacity, so, for instance I generally only have to commute about 25mi but it is not unheard of to have commutes where I never get over 15 to 20 mph on the freeway! The traffic is insane in certain areas. That coupled with as you're sitting on the freeway in traffic You are surrounded by fentanyl filled meth camps! Videos like this always give this rose colored glasses view of Portland, but that's just in very small pockets like some areas of downtown, lake Oswego, etc. large parts of the metro area are just drugs, crime, and the typical urban sprawl. Also, I don't know if she has kids or not but Portland public schools are pretty bad! Most of the people I work with have children that go to Portland public schools and they have generally nothing positive to say about them. I have lived in the metro area My entire life, and the cool, fun, safe Portland of the '90s is pretty much dead!
@@EdDohman I sadly have to agree with everything you wrote. I visited Portland since my last comment you replied to. I took that slow commute across the river, saw homeless encampments and people and abandoned cars all over the place, people on drugs, it was rampant and very hard to watch. The fact that my friend who is a die hard Portland person bought a home an hour away in the middle of nowhere and now has to drive to basic amenities and for any sort of social life in order to have a better future for her family was really telling. This girl was okay with hearing gunshots at night outside of her apartment and “never truly felt unsafe even tho I hear gunshots I know they’re not for me or that anyone would attack me” yet now even she can’t live there
I live in Hillsboro and I like it here. I would never live in like downtown Portland or the metro area because yea safety has become a concern. But the rent prices are crazy high. I am constantly fighting eviction after eviction in my apartment. Wish it wasn't that way but it's just the way it is 🤷♀️ I'll probably just become one of Portland's many homeless people....lol
I'm in Downtown almost every week. We just posted a video of the Portland Winter Ice Rink where we had a client event.
