After watching this video about 4 times lol, I finally figured it out. Incredibly useful, but if I may just make a suggestion for videos like that:
    1. Make the horizon line a different colour
    2. Draw the lines you use to measure in a different colour (to distinguish from the object itself)
    3. The lines that you measure to redraw (in this case on top of the boxes) should either be another colour or be marked with something like "x" as it's not initially clear that you're literally measuring their length with a ruler.
Love all the videos so far. This one was the only one up to now where I had a really hard time grasping initially.

For anyone confused by this video, the way you scale objects is demonstrated from 0:44 to 1:44. It is pretty simple technique, but for some reason he does a bad job of explaining it as he continues demonstrating the use of the technique into the rest of the video.

    • @krakor92
      @krakor92 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Exactly, I thought I understood at first but the second half of the video gave me a headache.
So I went back to the 0:44 explanation and then rewatched the 3:10 demonstrations but at 0.5 speed and it became much more understandable.
At slow speed, you can easily spot the already drawn vertical line that he uses as a reference when he draws his guideline from a random point to the horizon line. It also helps noticing when his ruler is aligned with a vanishing point off screen.

I don't understand why some people are complaining about having to rewatch the video and try out the exercises in order to understand these concepts. That's the whole point. If you want to spend three minutes passively watching and come out as an expert at the end, you're being unrealistic. Very unrealistic. The more difficult a thing is, the more you have to practise to get it down. If you find that particularly difficult, I expect that the Patreon channel will help, with the longer videos etc. So make the effort and/or pay the artist for the considerable time that's gone into the full tutorials. It may seem like everything is for free on TH-cam, but something is required from you in order to make it work.

    • @dshepherd107

Agreed. Think of this as a short class. After the class or lecture, you then have to practice and go over the material again and likely, again whilst practicing to get good at this.

At 3:10 he draws a vertical line (let's call it "line A").
His goal is to move this line to somewhere else in the scene so that it keeps the same length (not the same on the paper but the same length if it was a real scene and you could walk into it and measure it).
Then at 3:35 he draws a RANDOM point (let's call it "point B") where he want to transfer line A to.
Of course that point could be anywhere in free space (in terms of depth), but in the next part he does the clever stuff to place point B on top of the box and work out what the length of line A would need to be if it was moved so that it's bottom is situated at point B.
And then at 4:19 he draws line A at point B. And, according to the perspective of the drawing, it has the same "physical" length.
NOTE: this technique wouldn't work (or at least extra steps would be needed) in 3 point perspective.

Okay so MAJOR source of confusion I think you just helped clear up that has been bothering me in regards to my perspective drawings for a WHILE. At 5:00 you explain how you use the bottom point of an object's height to scale it relative to another object to keep them on the same ground plane then move them up or down in the space to show them "underground" or above it.
I had been using both interchangeably and in cases forgetting the ground plane all together and occasionally thinking that the horizon line acted as a ground plane since it's where the sky meets the horizon.
Thank you for sharing this, it seems so obvious but because it's so obvious it is easy to overlook

for the second half of the video, pause at every time when he's using the ruler to define his next line--because he's usually connecting two meaningful places--to try to understand why he is connecting those two meaningful points.
I think what he's trying to do is to PUT a line of (HEIGHT defined by the four weirdly placed scaled lines near the horizon), on TOP of the boxes (because those four lines are all the same height right? but who knows how tall that line will be if it's on top of the boxes, hence all the process).

Is it true that perspective has 6 points? Up and down, left and right, front and behind. We obviously don't have eyes on the back of our head but It's nice to know. Also We don't see only what is in front of us. Curvilinear perspective would be more accurate but its hard to draw the grid freehand

    • @chrisredfield3607

Yes, because in reality, we have infinitely many vanishing points, which means anywhere in the horizontal line could be a vanishing point for the ground plane, so we only need to make sure the object we need to scale is in the same plane (ground plane) to the main object we measured

Suppose we have a segment that is 4 units long in the two-dimensional plane (X axis for simplicity) . I want to draw that segment in the vanishing plane. Obviously in the 3-dimensional plane we can't just get a ruler out and measure 4 units as the object would look distorted. How is this done?

This video makes perfect sense until you got to the next part where you introduced the cubes (above ground level), and the hole (below ground level). It some additional analysis of your brisk movements to really grasp what was going on when you were moving the lines to a new point on top of the object (the cubes) or below the ground level (in the hole). You basically took the measurement of the line you made on ground level, and then transferred that exact measurement to the new point on top of the cube. You did the same when you placed the line below ground level into the hole. I only noticed this because I rewound and watched you transfer the same measurements of the line you drew on ground level, to the new line above ground level (on top of the cube)
Anyways, I get it now personally, but for other viewers you may want to consider slowing down just a tad so they can grasp what you are doing. I have watched all your videos up to this one and you explain things very well. Just sometimes, you speak very quickly and go very quickly so for people who are just trying to grasp this for the first time, it can be difficult. Anyways, thank you for the video :)

do the same thing but with a horizontal line above or below the horizon line.
      the process is analogous:
-not making a vanishing point before knowing the line you want to scale,
-drawing the horizontal line; line 1; that you want to scale,
-drawing a (new point) you want to scale to, connect this (new point) to the corresponding edge of the (first line) & keep extending the connection until the horizon to CREATE our (vanishing point),
-then connecting the other side of the (first line) to the new (vanishing point), lastly draw horizontal line from (new point) to meet.
that's just a step by step of what he did in the first half of the video so nothing new

@@Lazarus1095 idk man I'm just guessing here, but in his mirroring tutorial video, he doesn't use the scaling methods described in this video, rather he only needed to duplicate the object's surfaces(and the space to the mirror surface) across the mirror surface. That duplication method scales the lines by itself, so I'd say it doesn't really relate.
I'm not sure what you mean by extending the line of an angeled plane to meet the mirroring plane

I can successfully scale in three point perspective, but this video made absolutely no sense to me. Bro needs to stop dropping acid.
