  • Join as we delve into the intricate world of cigar making with none other than Pete Johnson, founder and owner of Tatuaje Cigars. From his initial entry into the cigar industry to establishing Tatuaje as a resonating name among connoisseurs, Pete shares his fascinating journey in this exclusive interview. Discover about his early passion for music, his love of wine, the story of how the brand came to be, and what is in store for the brand in the coming years.
This interview is filled with inside stories, tips, and knowledge about the world of cigars, a must-see for anyone passionate about cigars or fascinated by the stories behind the brands they love. Tune in to gain firsthand insights into the life, landmarks, and philosophy of Pete Johnson - the man behind Tatuaje Cigars.
Unveiling his humble beginnings, Pete takes us on a tour back to the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles, California, where he had his early stint as a musician before the cigar industry beckoned him. He sheds light on his first interaction with premium cigars and touches on the first ever cigar he smoked, marking the inception of his lifelong affair with cigars and the cigar industry.
Pete then recounts how he set foot in the realm of cigar making, from his first pipe-tobacco blends to his own cigars. Yearning to be more than a relabeled cigar brand, Pete patiently waited for the right partnership, leading him to Don Pepin García. The partnership that emerged from their shared dedication to creating the perfect smoke established the foundation of Tatuaje Cigars.
Understanding the delicate and complex art of blending various tobaccos - comparing it with writing a song - Pete articulates how the perfect blend is about infusing the right balance to create a cigar worth smoking. Continuing to enjoy we will Pete! Tatuaje is one of my favorite brand and if I had to take one cigar for life, it would like be the original brown label. It’s truly one of the best cigars on the planet. Much love Pete and to the My Fathery family!

Me and brother met Pete at cigar rights dinner in NYC many years ago. What a great guy.He was so passionate about what he was doing. Him and Pepin Garcia made a great combination. He told us the whole story and wanting to make a cigar that he wanted to smoke. Thanks for posting, great interview

Thankyou Holts, and Thankyou Pete Johnson. For me, this has been a very interesting interview because i am a regular pipe smoker (daily) and a cigar smoker occasionally. One of the things i enjoy about pipe smoking is trying both house blends (the tobacco blends that a traditional tobacconist mixes at their store) & private blends (the blends that a retail tobacconist has made under cantract with a pipe tobacco processor such as Lane, Sutliff or C&D) because unlike commercialy available brands which are sold at all tobacconist shops, these tobacco mixtures are available only at that specific Tobacconist. A few examples of this are; JM Boswell, Christie's House Of Pipes, LJ Piretti, Iwan Ries, Lewis Tobacconist & EA Carey. It's also a good way to help support the few traditional tobacconists that are to far away to visit, and then you can purchase the commercial brands from the local shop. So for me at least, it was interesting to find out that Pete used to blend pipe tobacco at a shop in Maine. I also want to give the moderator of Holts commentary a big thankyou for keeping these presentations educational instead of just rambling on about things, it's the reason i watch this broadcast.

Awesome piece. Thank you both for your time.
My grandfather smoked a pipe, and like Pete said, the aroma is still in my brain.
A buddy gave me a premium cigar in 1997. It was a little strong for my newbie palate, but I knew I wanted to experiment more.
Huge fan of cigars produced by the Garcia family. Tatuaje is now on my radar.

I started with Bering cigars that I bought at the Base Exchange and still have a few empty boxes I use as junk drawers. And by the way, Paso Robles is my favorite wine region anywhere. I’m going to have to seek out his cigars and give them a try. Thanks so much for this and all your videos. It’s been a great education as I’ve just recently returned to enjoying cigars after a hiatus for a decade or more.

Maybe an unpopular opinion but for me and my cigar nerd friends the first brand I fell in love with back in 2006 was Tatuaje. I have to wonder if Tatuaje hadnt been a cult hit early on would MF be what they are today? Many came to MF because of Pete and their love for the cigars made by Pepin. Great interview.

Nice interview. Tatuaje is 1 of 2 brands I smoke that are non Cuban. not much else satisfies my taste buds.
RE regulations. Leave it to the government to think that after 600 years of tobacco growing and usage that they need to come in and regulate things.

Highly doubtful. Otherwise it would be a common phenomenon (that Maz would likely have already addressed).

There would have to be extenuating circumstances. If that happens consistently to you it’s possible cigars just aren’t for you. It’s possible you have an allergic reaction to the tobacco.

    Make the brand more affordable.
Just did a check on my aging cigars in one of my thermoelectrics that have been in there a few months (4...tops), and everything was perfect, EXCEPT the 2 boxes of J21s. They had mold. Waste of $700+.
Put some cellophane on them, please? Help me protect my investment...especially at such a price

Is it me or is the cigar industry slowing down a bit. Kind of reached a plateau. Cigars can only be blended in so many ways and still be unique. But I could well be wrong.

Yet another new cigar company who is only in it for the money because he couldn't find a job.
Only talking about the money and price increases of cigars, that's his drive.
Is afraid to get stuck with his own cigars and only wants to sell them for the money.
Tatuaje is Spanish, but he doesn't have any Central American roots. He didn't even use his own name for the brand, like others do.
