      @@camronconners878 As an American trying to figure out if that's an idiom since it's not capitalized as if it were a bar or something, I imagined "have the keys to go to" as someone spinning around ferociously, throwing their keys into the air, spinning a bit more to make sure that they don't know where anything is, and then crawling around on the ground trying to "go to their keys" while their friends drink, laugh, and point until it's their turn. The fastest person wins a free pint and the slowest person wins a free, safe ride home.
      So is it a bar or something?

    Sitting in a St Andrews restaurant around fifteen years ago, having escaped the North Sea's attempt to move a mile inland we were amazed to see two students enter, dressed head to toe in tweed. They looked like they'd escaped from a Sherlock Holmes movie complete with plus fours, capes, deerstalker hats and curved pipes in their mouths. When told there were no tables available they simply turned round and set off out into the mini monsoon. It must have taken them a week to dry everything out when the got back to their accommodation!

      The essence of stand-up comedy is just a person with a microphone, creating a full night of entertainment with just talking. I've seen a few masters of the craft over the decades, including most recently Hannah Gadsby, who made commanding the attention of a thousand people seem absolutely effortless.
      But stand-up gets really lazy, not just for the comedians, but for the audience too. Audiences often don't like that awkward moment while the comedian sets up a specific scene like this just to make such specific jokes. So comedians rarely go into such obscure territory. It kind of reminds me of old fifties comedians who take a moment to announce the premise of the joke: "ladies and gentlemen, this is Feeding Spaghetti To an Elephant," or something like that.
      Rowen Atkinson was able to do one-man sketches like this, where he created a whole scenario by himself, but his scenarios were chosen to be very broad and accessible. What's impressive about Morton is that she doesn't care how few people get it, because those who do enjoy it all the more.
      Personally, I've never gotten further into Scotland than Edinburgh, and have no idea what any of these jokes refer to. But after watching, I feel like I've gotten an little education AND some great laughs, while also enjoying the primary point, a really well-done Scottish accent.

    • @def1ghi
      @def1ghi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@rottensquid Really good point about the essence of stand-up. I guess the thing is, with TH-cam, what you don't have is the energy between the comic and the crowd, so just SITTING in front of a white wall is kinda daring.... Very against the grain of TH-cam. Respect from me for sure....

    • @rottensquid

    You touched on what was wrong with St. Andrews. I watched a couple of other videos about that, but none spoke about the elephant in the room.
    Back in the 80s, Thatcher cut back on student grants, so universities had to fill empty seats with overseas-fee-paying students. In those days, there were 100-200 American students ("Yanks") in St A, a little over 50% English students, and a little under 50% Scottish students. Today, there are almost 1600 American students. The number of English students is about the same as before, and the number of Scottish students is way down, displaced by the American students. You could say that St A is no longer a Scottish university, and is certainly not what I remember. Most of my friends at the time were Scottish, mainly because the English students would not talk to the Scottish students, nor the American students.

    • @bencollins2259

      sorry but what youre saying isnt even unique to St Andrews. welcome to the privatization of all universities - this has been happening at hundreds if not thousands of universities. And it's not just overseas students either, postgraduate degrees are huge cash cows for unis as well hence huge uptakes there too. Also your info on 'displacing' Scottish students is wrong. Scottish unis are limited in the offers they can make to Scottish students - they're not limited in offers for students from the 'rest of UK' or international students - ergo why they're diluted by large numbers of both. Corporatization of the university is the issue - not international students. Please don't pedal this misinformation that sows division.

    • @johngellard1187
      @johngellard1187 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is it/was it all down to £?Does the Uni get more money per head for overseas students,or is it that the English and Scottish students are less keen on learning,and more keen on drinking in the local spoons?

    • @bencollins2259
      @bencollins2259 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@johngellard1187 it's everything to do with money. UK universities are measured by research output (look up research excellence framework) and the easiest way to get more research staff on payroll is increasing quotas of international and postgraduate students. This comes of course at the detriment of the learning and living experience for students, since most universities admit more students than they have the infrastructure for. So long as universities are yielding good research, this latter point is mostly insignificant.

      When I worked in Austria, a chap was chatting away near me. My German is pretty basic so I assumed he was talking German and I wouldn't understand very much. After a few minutes I realised he was speaking English with a strong Scottish accent. How the Austrians could make any sense of it I don't know. Considering that German TV programmes were broadcast with subtitles for the Austrians to understand.

The weather back home in the Houston area was 100F during the days whereas in the UK, it was slightly drizzly and about as cold as a cold winter day back in Houston. I much preferred it to the Houston HellHole Summers...
