  • September 2005.
Motor vessel TRANSIENT travels north to Gloucester and enters Gloucester lock to verify the clearance around the superstructure and deck equipment.
Because there could be a possibility of her coming downstream unladen on the Severn and entering Gloucester lock, it was important to also reverse into the lock, thus bringing the wheelhouse, navigation lights and wing mirror close to the raised bridge across the lock chamber.
Clearances were good, and the skill in winding the craft in the confines of the main dock were something to be seen.
No subsequent carrying of stone or aggregates through Gloucester by this superb vessel has occurred.

Nice clip but why did they enter the lock, come out again, re-enter, and then come out again?

This was to verify that there was clearance of navigation lights, davits and deck fittings etc from the various pipework, cables and fencing which are around and on the sides of the lock chamber. So for instance, items near the stern may have cleared when one way round, but not when facing south. The vessel now trades on the River Thames under a different name.
