    Wow wait this channel has only been around for three weeks?! Dude your videos are great! They're informative, no bullshit but also entertaining. The way you started this video really captured my attention, do you have experience making videos prior to this channel? Anyways, please keep doing this.

    Hi Guys, a simple way to get a very good clean sound from a SM58 mic on an instrument is to cut and frequency below 75hz, or some mixers have a LCF (low cut filter) or HPF (high pass filter) which essentially does the same thing. Cuts everything below 75 or 100hz which is where your muddy muffled sound is that would come with recording an instrument with a SM58.

      With a little care and creativity we can get some really nice stuff from some really inexpensive recording gear! Of course IMO the most important part of getting a good recording is a good performance on a good sounding instrument!

    Great idea for a video! 🔥🔥🔥 How did you boost the signal? Sm58 has a notoriously low input 😥

    • @matteliasmusic
      @matteliasmusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Vu Le so I think what I did here was just use the gain on my digital mixer which has decently quiet preamps to get enough signal from the 58. One thing I recommend if you’re struggling to get that signal level without the noise from a super quiet mic like an SM7b or even some type of ribbon mic is look into a Cloudlifter to boost the signal before it hits your preamp. I didn’t have one when this video was done but I do now and it’s a great little piece of gear, very sneaky 😁

    What preamp and setup are you using for the sm58? I use an audio interface and I have to crank the gain to 85-95% to get a decent sound.

    • @matteliasmusic
      @matteliasmusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm using a Yamaha mg10xu mixer going into the PC via USB here- and yes, with that setup I also found I needed to have the gain extremely high to get a proper signal. Sonewhere close to the levels you're using- which isn't ideal, I have to mention

    • @vatolegato
      @vatolegato 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@matteliasmusic interesting. Do you get any clipping or noise when recording with that much gain?

    • @matteliasmusic
      @matteliasmusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@vatolegato as for clipping, there's a sweet spot with positioning and that gain level to avoid it- with a dynamic mic like this, noise can happen but it's less severe an issue than with a condenser mic. It's one of the cool things about using an SM58 for something like this

      I've been using a pair of SM58s with an audio interface and got fetheads for both over time. They do really help and the mic sounds nicer to my ears... apparently fetheads better match the impedence sm58s were originally designed for.

    • @matteliasmusic
      @matteliasmusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rachel Francis thank you! I believe for this video I ran that SM58 straight into my interface, which at the time I believe was a Scarlett 18i8. There’s some crunchiness to it which I think was caused by my poor job of post production, something that happened while the video was encoded.

    • @matteliasmusic
      @matteliasmusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi! the guitar through the SM58 signal is essentially dry if i remember correctly for the purpose of demo-ing the SM58 sound-- but i do notice some digital distortion which i think is related to the audio encoding on the video editing end of things.

    • @matteliasmusic

      The signal path is bone simple, just a sm58 right into interface, with nothing done to it just to demonstrate the way the microphone reproduced the guitar sound

    • @bf2err
      @bf2err 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@matteliasmusic since you're replying let me ask you something. How far would you put your sm58 on a amp with more than usual hum?

    • @matteliasmusic
      @matteliasmusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      eric pratt so, that’s kind of a tough question for me to give a specific answer but I can tell you in my experience, I have played many shows using and SM57 to mic my cab, and I would typically put it right on the grill cover and offset from the center of the speaker cone at an angle, but there’s no one way to do it. What I would suggest is to test out a few different positions, play the same passage and record it, and listen back to find out which sound pleases you most! As for hum, if it’s so loud that it’s actually hurting the part you’re trying to play, (or if you’re talking about miking in a live situation) I would consider using some type of noise suppressor pedal in the signal chain to nip that in the bud and get those sweet tones without the buzz!
