I laughed pretty hard at the first part of splitting that block of concrete! Probably all the concrete that was missing on the rest of the original house foundations has been poured just there 😂

Use water with this technique to split

Really shouldn't weld rebar!! Use tie wire.

Why I shouldn't weld the rebar?

@@gajterpin2312 Depends on the welding method and/or technique. The heat from welding can either lower the mechanical strength of the rebar when making bigger weld length or the rebar steel can become brittle when making short weld spots. Both effects should be avoided. I would only use wire to hold the rebar in place.

I'm a mechanical technician by trade and know a thing or two about heat treating metals. With welding, I probably did not change the structural strength of the material much.

@@gajterpin2312 You're not building a bridge or supporting a suspended floor. It's probably fine. You probably would have been fine with just the mesh, plus you have the large rebar. I think welding can realign the crystalline structure of the metal, reducing its yield strength. You're pouring over a compacted sub-base, probably quite a large safety factor.

Done all the time. Very common, he is also not building a bridge, this is a floor slab at the end of the day.
