      I think my sister is a bit on the opposite. She changes water almost every day. A small water change about 10-15% water change every day!!! And one big one every Sunday with 25-30%. And she cleans the glass with a sponge or skrape every day so it's absolutely spotless. Had to tell her the fish needs a bit of algae. So she stopped cleaning the glass except the front. The aquarium is beautiful and clean but I think it a bit overkill. She gravel vacuums 2 times a week at least

      If done right, it can actually be amazing with very little work at all. A heavily planted tank with low stocking basically never needs water changes, and once it's balanced itself out it doesn't need to be cleaned either. I have one tank that I never need to do maintenence on that just stays beautiful, and one that very rarely needs a gravel vac when the cories don't pick up all the leftover food.

    • @allaboutroofing2
      @allaboutroofing2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This couldn't be further from reality. A well established tank doesn't require a lot of maintenance. You can create an environment that the biological system breaks down nitrates. It takes a few years for this to happen and a low flow filter system. Probiotic foods also break down waste in the tank. Good luck doing all that work tho.

    My Oscar loves to "redecorate" his tank when he isnt fed on time. It is quite a sight to see him throw sand everywhere while stopping to stare at you till hes fed lol.
    I had hoped to give him a 120 gallon with live plants both in and outside of the tank, but he has killed that dream.

    Thanks for putting out this video. I always say that if you don't enjoy cleaning an aquarium, you're not going to enjoy keeping fish. I have bristlenose plecos that seem magical in their ability to take in half an ounce of food and turn it into four ounces of poop. They are good at getting rid of the algea in those tiny hard to reach spots, but they do convert it to poop laying all over the place. My mystery snail is the interior designer in the tank. He likes to pop the heater out of its brackets and really just move anything that gets in his path. When faced with an obstacle, his approach is 'through' not 'around.' Before I got the snail, my air line ran through those little brackets that suction cup to the side of the tank. The snail was having none of that and removed the line from brackets daily; I finally removed the suction cups from the tank and just let the line lay where ever the snail leaves it.

      thats how you build up your nitrites, and get old tank syndrome. you need a better schedule, because in 3 weeks only doing a 50% water change wont get it lower, say ur waster builds too 5ppm of nitrites a week and doing a 50% water change just means after one week ur nitrites will be increasing slowly by 2.5 every week, therefore skipping a few weeks you may have 15ppm aftwe 3 weeks , in half now ur at 7.5, next week itll be at 10 instead of staying at a safe 2.5

    So, I have been following you and others over the last 4 months. Just got into the hobby at the new year (aka 4 months ago). I rebuilt a 110 gallon. Set up an In tank sump filtration process. The part I would like to start a dialog about is that I also set it up in a way that I have a self sweeping bottom that pushes all waste into the filer housing. I'd love to share it with you if you see this.

    I had a Gerbil that my boys loved as their first pet that lived to be TEN...he had really grey hair when he passed of old age.
    I once bought three beautiful 'Male' platies twelve years ago and now I have probably two, three generations of absolutely beautiful live bearers that kept me so interested, and several 'upgrades' a UV filter when everything my new education on chemistry sets told me was the only kind of short term solution to pea soup.
    Next, I guess is the dog and the aviary!
    It's ALL good...I look at my new venture into planted aquariums and when the sun sets I still have beautiful gardens with lots of colourful mongrels 👍😊

    I recently got an infestation of limpets. Since i've had them, my off-white sand has actually been clean. Turns out they eat fish poop, among other things.. However, i only have dwarf and furcata rainbows in my tank, along with a couple of cory catfish. Believe it or not, they can make a huge mess.... And limpets can clean it up. I totally doubt limpets can keep a goldfish tank substrate free of poop, though. :)

    I keep convict cichlids with my oscars and they all co-exist well. I use them for the same thing you mentioned to follow behind them and clean up the excess food they spit out. Some days the convicts back the oscars up in corners rather than the oscars bullying them. For the most part though they all get along fine. Never had a death or issue related to them bullying each other.

    • @ComancheWarrior63
      @ComancheWarrior63 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I kept a mated pair of convicts in a 55 gallon with a mated pair of Jack Dempsey. I used a 1x8 plank to divide the bottom of the tank and never had a problem with aggression. Once the fry began to explore they didn't last long. I was fine with that since it's a natural cycle. All 4 fish had incredible color and personality. I used high quality pellets along with about 10% live/frozen food and switched to live only when they were ready to breed. I fed the fry with egg yolk for the first week then switched to daphnia for a week then brine shrimp.
      I also had a mated pair of Oscars in a 55 gallon. I fed the fry to my 55 gallon and 20 gallon long community tanks. When my Oscars reached 8 inches I gave them to a breeder who put them in a 150 gallon.

    Fun fact about goldfish and why they're so messy. They don't have stomachs! So everything they eat just goes directly to the poop chute. That's why they're constantly rummaging around looking for food is because they're always hungry.

      @lydialareau5997 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Which is so strange! The more research that has been done, the more it’s said goldfish are one of the worst feeder fish. Reason is because of the waste, Goldfish don’t have stomachs so they are constantly producing waste… and on top of that they have the most ammonia of most if not all freshwater fish. All the ammonia and other potential toxins just aren’t good for your fish you’re feeding. :) Happy fish keeping

    • @themute9354

      Bettas prefer more horizontal space. Having more vertical space can cause issues since they are labyrinth fish and breath air. So if you do go with a betta or another Gourami, make sure there’s some plants and stuff for them to rest on near the surface.
      I’d try a school of Ember tetras with shrimp personally. If you want a Gourami with them, a Honey Gourami would compliment their colours, or a betta.

    Goldfish are cold-water bred into warm water, hence the amount of poop. It has something to do with metabolism of what used to be a pond fish. Second it has to do with digestion system of the "carp" family. Barbs aren't much better.

    He's right on the goldfish, let me tell ya. I have a beautiful 75G and I have comets/commons in there and I have to do a 25% water change everyday and 100% once a month. But it's well worth the work because they're just such amazing creatures and they get so big and beautiful and the personalities I mean no 2 are remotely similar. It's a real shame that the majority of goldfish aren't looked after properly because they're truly awesome animals.

      I've been in the aquarium hobby since 1975. I've never kept goldfish several friends do. They were having the same problem with hygiene. I told them to place the substrate in mesh bags and to wash half of the bags every 2 days in the water from water changes.
      IF you do 25% water changes every 2 days and wash the mesh bags at the same time you will have a much better time and so will your fish.

    Biggest slobs are big fish that get put into small tanks. Or deformed fish like goldfish that look small because they're bred short but have the digestive track of a bigger fish

      @@apss5736 You will not believe it, that female crowntail betta I had in my 10-gallon tank, I bought 2 platies and those were quarantined, so those were a little expensive than the regular ones. when I put those platies with the betta, they were fine. But when I came home from school one of the platies was completely destroyed and the other one was fine. When I looked at that tank I saw the betta was constantly picking on the destroyed plati. Luckily, I had another 10-gallon tank with 8 guppies in it, so I put those 2 platies in that tank but 1 died and the other one is doing great. So, I think my crowntail doesn't appreciate any tank mates in her tank. But I still love my betta😊

    • @apss5736
      @apss5736 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@candlelitnight yeah some bettas cant have tank mates. it is possible the reason that this happened was because if you added the betta first then the betta might get territorial because she thinks that the tank is her territory and not tolerate the other fish. i had a similar mistake but luckily i had a spare tank and everything is fine now

      Yea that was probably the reason also if you ever introduce other fish then rearrange the tank decor and if you add more platies then get about 4 or 5 so that the betta doesn't single out one fish. Sorry for your loss tho and I hope all the fish are doing well.

    It's true that goldfish produce more waste than probably any other popular aquarium fish. However, since they get hungry pretty fast, they start sifting through the substrate the way catfish do and thus keep it cleaner than most other fish. Also, goldfish food contains less protein and thus puts less ammonia products into the water. And since goldfish don't have a stomach, they physically can't eat too much food at a time. So it's not that straightforward.

  • @mariolyndelange5936

    100% accurate. But goldfish will definitely eat other small fish, but its not a predator based eating response like many fish. It's a more like a "if i fits I sits" situation, if it fits they'll eat it. Imagine zoned out eating, that's goldfish.

Every time I check the ammonia levels it's says it critical, I did a 50 percent water change, cleaned my sand etc, tested it again today and it's still critical but all my fish are energetic, great color, my water is clear for the most part, my tank isn't over stocked, I still have 10 in he's give or take more room.
