I'm so glad you guys did this movie. Funny story, I actually spent 35 years of my life watching this movie trying to decide if it was a masterpiece or a piece of shit and finally after all that time I came to the realization that it's a god damn masterpiece. I cannot tell you how many friends I have forced to watch this movie. I have been the lone cheerleader for Joe vs The Volcano so I am beyond happy you guys are spreading the word.

You guys are my heroes now, you just reviewed one of my all-time-favorites!!!
I've loved this movie since I saw it back in the early 90s on VHS (unfortunately the film was never in the cinema here in Austria)! You researched and said everything about it, recognized the poetry, the craziness, the symbolism, the humanity. For me this is really a piece of art and it's a shame that the film has been so forgotten.
And yes, Patricia's "The whole world is asleep" speech was also THE moment for me. It touched me deeply and I remember that I wrote it down in my diary...
And of course I fell in love with Meg Ryan (again) - who wouldn't? (Btw: another forgotten gem with her is "Promised Land", maybe you know it?)
What you forgot to mention: the beautiful and always a little bit over the top score by the late, great George Delerue!
Oh, and the shopping montage briefly featured Carol Kane as a hairdresser! ;)
Thank you for your wonderful und very interesting review! I loved it!
All the best from far Austria! :)

This is my favorite Tom Hanks film of all time! I call it a Rom-Com Matrix. So few people even know about it- so glad to see this review!

    1. At the end before they jump Joe says, "It's been a long-crooked road".
The company logo is seen in the entrance to the factory, in the crumbling wall in Joe's house, in the shape of the lightning bolt that sinks the boat, in the way up to the volcano, and, in the film's trailer. (Included on the DVD) is the lightning bolt that travels up the film's title and strikes the top.
    2. If you don't love Meg Ryan after this it's on you. It's an absolute crime what her recent facelifts did to her.😢
    3. The chauffeur/Ozzie Davis is great. He played Judge Farres in Stephen King's "The Stand". (original)
    4. I love the Dr. being a quack and the whole thing being a ruse.🧐

I was seven when my parents took me with them to see this. I knew Tom Hanks from Splash, Big, Burbs and Money Pit, so I was expecting another jem of a Hanks film. Since I was only 7 I remember being very board with it, the shark and the gags on the island were the only real enjoyment I walked away with, and that's why I never really went back to it. Thank you both for reviewing this, I never realized until now just how much if a jem this film truly is. I'm gonna go find it and watch it again after 34 yrs 👌

Great throwback! I forgot about this movie. I love it when you guy's covered forgotten gems from the 90s. Btw, I was surprised to see that you guys haven't covered Congo yet! Seems like a great one to do a deep dive on. I'd love to head your guys' thoughts.

16 Tons is the song at the beginning of the film. A cover of a song originally performed by Tennessee Ford I believe. Could be wrong.
Man I miss films like these. Or rather, I miss that films like this used to be made.

Phenomenal film. I've seen it many times over the last 30 plus years.
Joe Versus the Volcano always reminded me of The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin.

I did a paper in my college Asian Studies class on the correlation between Daoism and this film 🤦🏻‍♂. Friends however weren’t having any of it.
…haven’t heard anyone feeling that the luggage had a “life’s baggage” metaphor (any takers)… As in you can never leave it behind so learn to accept.…
…and at least 10 days at sea? (From waxing crescent to full as shown in film)

I remember watching this on tv at a young age and many themes from the movie flew over my head, back then for me was like a fairy tale movie. but as an adult i realize there are a lot of deep meanings and things to think about, is also interesting they did not have a big production but managed to craft a lot of fantastic elements into the film and watching now it gives it a special charm.

Great movie guys. I didn't get it when I was young but after subsequent watches I woke up and got it. Meg Ryan is gorgeous in every scene and Tom Hanks is just great as always, great supporting cast too. If anything killed this movie its the title, I am sure it puts people off watching it.

    Spoiler:
So if Woponi Woo is destroyed, where would Graynamore look next for more bubaru for superconductor manufacturing? Does this slow humanity’s progress in technology and science? Was there no motivation for the greater good with Joe’s hero complex other than maybe appeasing the Wopinis? Graynamore could have made up anything or just paid Joe to jump without mentioning the semiconductors, meaning there was enough truth and importance to it to be his motivation for actually paying a man to jump into a Volcano. I understand the theme is “away from the things of man” however, every other Joe stuck back home, still working in some factory, could soon be out of a job. I wouldn’t want to return to the future without smartphones and I was the reason either.
