Looks a lovely flight Rory, my father was based at RAF Woolfox Lodge during the war and was seeing my mum who was at RAF Hospital Ely, nice to hear it got a mention. I took him there for a visit in the '70's before he passed away.
Thank you very much. I do feel a tiny bit more confident each time I go flying. I hope by the time I get to 250 hours and have done an FI course I’ll be quite useful. 👍
Always enjoy your vids Rory. Keep em coming mate.Good to see the old country with snow from altitude too. Still a tad warm here in Queensland for any of the white stuff.

Another great Sunday evening, our time, episode Rory, love seeing the English country side, best regards from Australia PS great to see the extra GoPros
Great video again, Rory. You do a great job of explaining the route and then updating as you go along. It makes it all the more interesting, especially when you talk through your thought process.. and what you're going to do next. Some very nice touches 👌👏👏
Nice one Kevin, thank you. I can’t wait to be able to go to other airfields & private sites and take passengers. I think that will be really interesting. 👍
Great stuff again Rory and fabulous views in crystal clear light. I take it helicopters do not have autopilot - means no respite from concentration I should imagine.
Well bigger more sophisticated ones have autopilot but the ones I’m flying at the moment don’t so yes, I have to be hands on the entire time. It’s quite tiring but it’s great fun.
Nice flight Rory - when things reopen you could maybe pop into Skegness Airfield as it's right near the beach and a great airfield to visit with very friendly people.

Excellent video Rory. Snow covered scenery looked spectacular and detailed explanations of your thought processes as well as ATC interaction made for really interesting viewing. When are we going to see you flying Lizi in the helicopter for the first time?
Thank you Tim - that’s very kind. I can’t wait to take Lizi flying but we are not allowed to fly with passengers until the end of the month. I guess it’s only fair when you guys have been grounded so long. Hopefully there will be a video soon.
Great way to start a Sunday watching Rory on air. They did a scenery update on MFS2020 of the U.K. So I popped up to fly over Eriskay but strangely your house is not as good with the update..
The joke is I double checked Eriskay spelling before I posted... Being an idiot my brain did not pick up it was the wrong place....Sorry ...I did fly to the correct Island though
Hi Rory just started to follow you and now watching your fixed wing videos brilliant. Just one question a microlight Licence and a light aircraft Licence are they the same are is there a difference? Cheers
Hi Pete - a very warm welcome first of all. So the NPPL is for microlights and is essentially a UK licence for up to two seats max. The LAPL is for group A aeroplanes and is much more like a traditional PPL only it's slightly more limited. Europe only as opposed to worldwide and I think 6 seats max. (It has been a while since I checked the details) Rory
Yes, very much so. It’s great fun, relaxed and affordable. I’m planning to get my NPPL M check flight and hours done before the expiry in June so I can use it again. I’d like to be able to fly both going forward.
What are the rules for helicopters with regard to special permits to actually land on the beach? In Netherlands we can get permission between October and March to land on the beach after ridge soaring the dunes with gliders, as long as we have a ground crew keeping a landing area clear.
I’m not sure exactly Mark. I know emergency helicopters land on the beach sometimes but I don’t know about someone like me doing it for fun. Above the tide line I guess it would be at the permission of the land owner but I will ask some questions.
Hi Rory. Was this trip on Saturday morning (27th)? I happened to notice a G2 from Leicester on Flight Radar 24 and I thought it could have been you. Same route on the radar as the flight plan you showed. You were too low/far away for me to hear you on the radio from where I am. Lovely snowy scenery from the camera views.
Its there some definition between a zone and approach? I always used to call Norwich Approach, but RAF Benson had a Zone. Maybe it's a civilian military ATC split.
@@RoryOnAir I think I need to brush up a bit more on my RT if I start going places with my Aircraft. I suppose its all about practice and keeping current.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 yes, practice and doing it regularly has really helped me. Have a read of the relevant bits of CAP413 and practice the calls in the car or something. That’s what I do!
Ah ok! Only asking because I guess if something drops on the floor in a heli it’s pretty difficult to pick it up! Love your videos thanks for sharing and keep them coming ...
Amazing video. Amazing lifestyle. Thanks for sharing. What do you use as an - easy to use/read - timer Rory? The issue with "Zone" versus "Approach"? In these parts, iirc, Eg "Brize Norton Zone" and when active "Lynham Zone", back in the day military were "Zones" and civilian were "Approach" and "Departure"? "Sorry can't fight a war the wind is in the wrong direction", quite right too lol! But the new Raptor struggles with passwords and starting up, thus delayed or cancelled missions - I wonder if it uses Windows 10?! Lmao! My friend's, boss's new £70k Mercedes is the same "sorry you'll have to wait to start your journey, 30mins - 2hrs of updates detected". Oops! Something to be said for k.i.s.s.
Yes, military use zone where civilian stations don’t, but radar and approach are common to both - that’s my understanding anyway. I think it’s hard to tell who’s using what as it changes. Also, did you notice that Marham told me to call Coningsby but didn’t say zone or approach? The transponder has a timer on it which is very handy. And yes, more complicated tech is not always fault free!
Hi Rory, Good points, I didn't know if it was the same, I was talking about the early 1980s - late 1990s, not that I was always paying full attention, ha ha! Yes I did notice that Marham didn't state 'Zone' or 'Approach', very confusing for onlookers like me. Useful that timer on the transponder. Having easily viewable, to hand items when work load is high can really help. You're becoming an old hand now though mate, very exciting times.
@@musoseven8218 well I still feel extremely green but each flight helps add to my experience and you’re absolutely right about the tech being there to help. Even the transponder having real buttons for the number input helps a lot.
Every day is a school day - that's how it should be - looks like you're doing it all 'right' though, you'll get there. Transponders? Proper buttons, proper sized buttons etc? I completely agree. Some of those found in microlights etc are - perhaps understandably - very fiddly and small. Then with age comes eyesight issues, but not quite at the varifocal stage, so good eyesight, but small instruments etc don't help.
