My Virgin Kitchen old school soda streams are always on eBay Australia. Also do you use the FB buy sell feature? Soda Streams are on that a lot as well.
Your disclaimer at the start makes me so pleased and happy. I have disabilities, and it's because of your reviews that I went and got myself a slappy chopper. It's made a world of difference. But that disclaimer means a lot, so thanks Barry :)
To be fair, the slappy chopper is useful for literally everyone but it's a point well made. I get annoyed when people make fun of supermarket pre-chopped stuff, because there's people who really need that stuff. Or at least that stuff means they can make meals solo they otherwise couldn't. Incidentally, if you look on Amazon, Barry's slappy chopper is about £20. If you go up to about £26 there are ones that also have a bunch of replaceable stuff on the lid so you can do grating, chopping and even juicing straight into tub. As an added bonus, none of the blades have fallen out of mine yet :P
RedstonerD Chocolate seizes when it comes in contact with water because chocolate is just oil (and thus doesn't mix with water lol). You're right about the microwave being uneven, which is why it's important to stir often and melt in short blasts to make sure it doesn't overheat and burn or seize. Maybe next time, Barry
Massaging the chocolate in the thing is necessary for even heating. Just like you have to stir chocolate in a bowl, you have to move it around and mix it in the silicone thing
Chocolate isn't "just oil", it contains over 100 different substances, and only 10-30% (depending on the type of chocolate) is oil or cocoa butter. Sugar typically makes up more than 40%, and the rest is mostly cocoa solids (and powdered milk, if you're using milk chocolate). Although water can indeed turn chocolate "lumpy" (by combining with the _sugar_ - the issue isn't the oil), what seems to be happening here is the chocolate is getting burned by microwave nodes (i.e., places where the wave is static). Fun fact: you can actually use this effect with a large bar of chocolate to measure the length of microwaves (approximately 12 cm)! Well-designed ovens have less nodes, but there's often one near the centre. You can reduce that effect by putting the chocolate off-centre on the dish (which rotates precisely to avoid those nodes) or using containers that absorb part of the microwaves and then radiate the heat more evenly (typically thick glass or ceramics). With the right set-up you can even go full bast for a couple of minutes, and melt it just fine. Putting chocolate inside a thin plastic container right in the middle of a microwave is just asking for trouble.
yeah i dont think reusing previous gadgets would be an issue - it's not meant to introduce new gadgets, it's meant to decide which gadget is best out of a category of (old or new) gadgets that do the same thing. you could also test the gadgets vs the ungadgeted form - for example, if you were testing various avocado slicers, you would also have a regular knife and you would cut the avocado the normal way without any assistance from gadgets
Hey Barry. The cheese grater is not new. I’m a 54 year old Australian and my mother had a metal version of this before I started school. The grater could be clamped to a table edge and small blocks of cheese would be put into the hopper. As you turned the handle the cheese would fall from the side into a bowl that was placed beside the grater. I really enjoy your videos. (Especially the ones where Mrs Barry joins in). Keep making great entertaining videos!
Yeah that seemed to be the issue. I recently watched The After Prison Show where the guys made prison candy where they melted stuff like jolly ranchers and tootsie rolls in a microwave and warned about such things.
Chocolate requires agitation/stirring to melt smoothly when microwaved due to how microwaves heat unevenly, ie:it doesn't transfer heat well and if it gets too hot in one particular spot that one spot will burn and appear seized, while chocolate around it will melt. Try gently squeezing/massaging the container between bursts rather than shaking. After two 30 second bursts swap to 15 or 10 seconds, your second attempt of chocolate looked good before the final burst, it just needed some stirring to equalise the temperature through the whole mixture. Also make sure the container is bone dry because water will seize it.

My Virgin Kitchen i assume the lid would hold in any steam the chocolate produces while being melted which could’ve condensed/combined with the chocolate when you shook it?
What? Lol Water doesn't ruin melted chocolate! Adding water to melted chocolate is what makes it super shiney. Adding water also aids in making it runny and really easy to pour or use for decorating.
For the chocolate melting one, I think you may have done it for too long! I've tried to melt chocolate in the microwave and if you do it for a few seconds too long it can burn really easily! Hope this helps!!
That salter grater is basically a copy of the Moulinex Mouli Grater, and not a very good copy either, Mouli graters, particularly the metal ones, are great, pardon the pun... :P
I saw it and was like, "I have one of those!" I don't really use it as a guide. But occasionally as a reference for the size of cuts. I bought a few more on sale and have to various friends as novelty/serious gifts.
If you do manage to get one of the old Soda Streams - They changed the size of the gas bottles a while back and the new bottles don't fit in the old machines, That said - There's really no difference between the old and new machines and you can easily get a new one
We had one when I was a kid. Cost my parents a fortune replacing the "bomb" (Co2 cannister) every week but I was really popular with my friends during the summer when we needed to slake our thirst when playing out all day in the sun. I think they just liked the fart sound the Soda Stream made when you'd put enough gas in your bottle.
I just recently found your channel and LOVE it!!! It's great how you demonstrate using a product like most of us would, instead of piecing together short clips that fake how difficult (and often useless) they are. And OMG... watching you with that cutting board and finely dicing celery was priceless! Hope you have a wonderful day and take care!
A rotary cheese grater can be very useful, but that particular model is absolute junk and you used the wrong cheese. You need to get a much better quality model and use a hard cheese, like a Parmesan style.
Like Jason said, this model is terrible and this type of cheese grater can only be used on hard cheeses so it's the manufacturer of this particular model that messed up.
D0senpf4nd [Sigh] Regardless of what's claimed on the side of a package containing a piece of junk, a rotary grater does not perform well with softer cheeses. Someone who's never used a rotary grater before probably wouldn't know that unless they're warned, but it's common knowledge for those of us who have. I'm not placing "blame" or admonishing anyone. I'm just pointing out a simple fact. You can carve a turkey with a pocket knife, but that doesn't mean you should.
Regarding temperature, IMO, no one should be hacking at another person for their temperature preferences. We all acclimate differently, and some never acclimate properly to heat or cold. I spent 23 years in a hot area, I still can't take what I consider hot temperatures. A person from like, Texas or Florida, or any other routinely hot country would consider my idea of hot a cool spring day most likely. However, what I consider a truly cold winter day would have them running for the heater. It's all a matter of what each person can take.

The cloud and sun looked the wrong way round Barry. Swear it's the other way as the silicone sun and cloud are directly on the pan and stops the white from leaking.
No. He had it in the pan correctly. You’re supposed to just crack the egg in the sun area, the white runs into the cloud area under the edge and the yolk stays in the sun.
@@xleaguex2655 if you use it the other way around, the yolk and whites would be disconnected and the channel for letting the whites flow into the cloud would be pointless. The lifting tabs are also _more_ functional when they're at the bottom so you can pull them away from the side of the egg to unstick it while you lift it up and the wider brim creates a far better seal on the pan to reduce white leakage that the thin bit would.
Tip for the chocolate melting Gadget. It should never get too hot to handle because the melting temperature is not that high. also after probably about 45 seconds if you shake it up and if you just keep shaking it it should melt all the way through you never want to have it all the way melted in the microwave you want to finish melting it kind of out of the microwave while you're shaking it. Hope this helps.
OMG BARRY REPLIED and hahah the parts which separate the yolk and white is supposed to be touching the base of the pan so how you placed it was upside down
I think it was the right way up. The idea is you crack the egg into the sun, the partial wall will hold the yolk while letting the white spread to fill the mold.
It was right.. If u look properly the way barry did was was flat side down. what a fellow commenter said previously is right.. The idea is to crack the egg into the sun area and the white will spread on its own leaving the yolk in placw
i agree with you, there's a reason why there is all flat side to it, yolk would seperate that wasy and would not sit on whites, which makes momre sense. Also there's the edge which you then hold to pick it up
That Salter cheese grater model has been around since the 80's. I used to grate all the cheese my parents bought because I enjoyed the mechanic. I also remember it getting clogged up, although not as much as with the Salter :)
I think there's a Sodastream video with Barry & Stuart coming out on the Ashens channel soon, which will be a newer make, but also probably why Barry wants an older one, as the nostalgia will have kicked in.
Your microwave is so cool! It looks kinda retro but has cool buttons. I dont get how you'd set a specific time without a number pad though. And stirring or shaking chocolate is probably a good idea. Maybe was there some water left over in the silicone after washing? That could cause it to seize. Or also maybe get it mostly melted and then instead of putting it back in the microwave let it sit and shake or stir it until the rest is melted? Whenever I melt chocolate in a bowl I never microwave it fully to liquid. I get it mostly there then stir to let the residual heat melt the last bits!
Your Salter looks like a knockoff of the Zyliss cheese grater, fab to have on hand for pasta night, with a chunk of hard parmesan or romano cheese, to pass around for everyone to use.
Great video! I'm heading off to college and renting a apt with no kitchen, it's a steal though. $400 usd for 1 bedroom (sharing) 1 bathroom, 1 living room and free internet, paid bills for water/electricity. What is a must need gadget or tech for me since I have no kitchen but still need to cook?
Daangelet 123 A pasta express could be useful all you need is boiling water , it's not just for pasta . You can do veggies and things like hot dogs ,and they are fairly cheap hope this help and good luck with college
Moomin Beveridge Thank you, I probably will buy one just need to work on my budget a bit 👍 it isn't expensive at all, just need a microwave or a burner to get boiling water
I second the instant pot. It's a sautee pot, slow cooker and pressure cooker in one. It can also make some bread/cakes, cook rice, and make yogurt! It can do so much for one little thing
Toni Alves no he didn’t because what your supposed to do is crack the egg into the sun and the whites would go out underneath the overhang. Also the white going outside the edges of the mould is totally normal
With regards to the carrot scrubber, we've just always had nailbrushes in the kitchen for potatoes and such. Recently we bought a twin-pack of nail brushes with good, solid handles, the green one is designated for veggies, and the clear one gets used to clean the purifier wicks.
Could the chocolate melter have failed because of water left from washing? Like when you do the double boiler method you’re not supposed to let water in. Doesn’t explain the burning though.
We have a few of those cheese graters and find them super useful for Parmesan specifically! As it's a harder cheese it doesn't all stick, clog, and congeal. Plus with harder cheeses you have to use a lot of force to grate them with normal box graters - and so this gadget makes it much much easier!
I have a cheese grater likes that. The handle is attached to the grater itself and it works like a charm. And that thing is 10+ years old and still works like a charm
Some of these would be great for kids too, like that chopping board could help the girls learn how to chop veg to size, or the brush could be used if someone wanted kids to help but didn't trust them with a peeler.
Being a owner of a style of the egg design tool you don't separate the yoke the gap allows the white to run and fill without the yoke moving they are awesome
I have a soda stream, not an 80s one though. I got it like 3 years ago. I use it all the time, it is by far my favourite kitchen gadget. Especially since I love soda water. For anyone who likes anything carbonated, they are really useful, and highly practical.
The cheese greater you tested (also known as a mouli greater) is a very old type of grater. It does actually work better if the cheese is harder maybe best to put the cheese in the freezer for maybe half an hour before hand if the cheese you use is quite soft. Also it's best to put the hole the cheese is to come out of facing down, so gravity helps it out of the column. I've used one of these types of graters for years and love it. Plus also yes it does work better with a smaller block of cheese that actually fits in the chamber. Hope this helps.
We've got one of those cheese grater things from IKEA. Much more sturdy, as the handle is attached to the grater drum, it's brilliant. Use it mostly for parmesan.
Also, you want a decent apron that a man can be proud of, get the denim apron from Pampered Chef. 100% rugged blue denim, fully adjustable neck string, 2 large pockets up front. It doesn't try to over-complicate things, it's just quality armor against grease splatters.
I’ve got that chocolate melter and it’s gone very white. There’s a film over it that I can’t get rid of. Plus yeah it burns the chocolate. I’m glad to hear the shaking works... ish.
My town was 46C on the 27th of July. The hard part is not the heat of the day in the afternoon but at midnight it was still 39C. It just never cooled off enough to open the windows, we ran the ac all night!
Barry, just a tip on your microwave use: lots of us make the mistake of putting stuff dead center in the microwave. You'll do better moving things off-center, thus moving round & round as the microwave plate rotates.
With the chocolate melting pot I read that the more successful melts used premium chocolate, had put the lid on loose, used 10 second blasts because they had a higher wattage (so it depends on your microwave wattage... one person had 700 watt microwave snd had to put it for two 30 second blasts on low and then high), and stir it in between using the back of a spoon so it would fit into the container. You can also use it for white chocolate and butter. You can turn it inside out to clean it in the dishwasher.
When you FINALLY got the handle on the cheese grater and was so happy .. then it fell off , I laughed so hard ! Hubby gave me a strange look .. lol 😊 ....
Idk if you guys have the Italian restaurant called Olive Garden, but all the wait staff use this exact type of cheese grater at the table in order to put "freshly grated parmesan" on your dish that you just received. Love it when they do that.
I remember I had a similar kind of cheese grater a fair time ago, except for two crucial changes. It was entirely metal, and it was in two pieces instead of three, the handle was part of the grating... Barrel thing. That made it much more sturdy and durable, and many a cheese was grated so easily my seven year old self did it safely.
Barryyyyy I worked for Lakeland for years and have three of those chocolate melting pots. You gotta stir it between blasts and it's perfect. It's also GREAT because you can turn it completely inside out to clean it.
I love this series lmao. I don’t watch many 20+ minute videos, but I always watch these through the entire way. As always (won’t ever change), great stuff Barry! 👍

You get soda streams and refills from Argos.
New style and retro style.
I have the retro one just like when I was a kid.😜
Barry, maybe with the silicone chocolate melting device, try letting it sit on warm/hot water rather than microwaving it?
You can get soda stream from the range but not an old one I guess
You washed the chocolate maker, right? I think there was still water inside it, which caused it to burn and seize.
Your disclaimer at the start makes me so pleased and happy.
I have disabilities, and it's because of your reviews that I went and got myself a slappy chopper. It's made a world of difference. But that disclaimer means a lot, so thanks Barry :)
MrsInAbox very cool! I’m disabled too and am always looking for new gadgets to help me. ☺️
To be fair, the slappy chopper is useful for literally everyone but it's a point well made. I get annoyed when people make fun of supermarket pre-chopped stuff, because there's people who really need that stuff. Or at least that stuff means they can make meals solo they otherwise couldn't.

The chocolate did that from ANY water that was in the gadget. Also, 5sec bursts would be better towards the end to stop it burning.
Gillian Miller THE FAM!! Also stirring it.
AttackRunRepeat I think it's mostly stirring because of how uneven microwaves heat up stuff
RedstonerD Chocolate seizes when it comes in contact with water because chocolate is just oil (and thus doesn't mix with water lol). have you thought of comparing gadgets? say having 5 or 6 that are meant to do the same thing but have their own quirks?
Could do but that may involve some ive already done
Thats a great idea!

yeah my mum still has one of those old cheese graders and it still works.
My gran had one, they sold the old metal version in wilko a few years back so you can probably still get them
My mum also has a metal one. When we used it back then, it always left metal shavings in the cheese
My mum also had one.
with the chocolate silicone thing, it looks like your microwaving it for too long. stop at 45 sec and let the residual heat melt the remaining chunks
Yeah that seemed to be the issue. I recently watched The After Prison Show where the guys made prison candy where they melted stuff like jolly ranchers and tootsie rolls in a microwave and warned about such things.
ThulsaVerda love APS!
I think if he stopped at 45 seconds it would have been enough because the food carries on cooking for about 30 seconds after you stop microwaving
Louise You have to lower your power setting, also. You need to be below 50 percent or use the defrost setting.
Yess! Thank you! Glad someone said it

that dang gabbie maybe little bottles... Cuz the normal squirt bottles arent that much smaller or weigh much less...
You should've stirred the chocolate to prevent burning. Its just like you would melt it in any other bowl except this one is silicone. :)
Was there still water droplets in there when u put the chocolate in? One drop will ruin the whole chocolate batch
Nope dried it thoroughly both times!

Jess Kendall oh yes! Possibly.
What? Lol

It should never get too hot to handle because the melting temperature is not that high. also after probably about 45 seconds if you shake it up and if you just keep shaking it it should melt all the way through you never want to have it all the way melted in the microwave you want to finish melting it kind of out of the microwave while you're shaking it. Hope this helps.
i love how barry used the wrong side of the egg shaper
It was flat side down? Isn’t that right
OMG BARRY REPLIED
and hahah the parts which separate the yolk and white is supposed to be touching the base of the pan so how you placed it was upside down
I think it was the right way up.
I'm quite sure Barshens Stuart has an 80s Sodastream.
I dunno man, it's not a retro computer.
He did a review of the Sodastream a while back, so he certainly had it.
I was totally thinking about that... As soon as he said that, I thought, "Why don't you ask Ashens if you could have his?"
I think there's a Sodastream video with Barry & Stuart coming out on the Ashens channel soon, which will be a newer make, but also probably why Barry wants an older one, as the nostalgia will have kicked in.
He did a video about it, yes, with Cousin Dan. But i seem to remember it was a recent model.
Love these videos! Saves idiots like me from buying all this junk on impulse haha
The capsicum one would definitely be perfect for stuffed capsicums! Think that's my fave of this video
The cheese was melting in the grater because it's so warm today.
And I know this kind of grater mainly for parmesan cheese which is much firmer and dryer so might not stick together ad much!
That cutting board would be perfect for your miniature food series
Your Salter looks like a knockoff of the Zyliss cheese grater, fab to have on hand for pasta night, with a chunk of hard parmesan or romano cheese, to pass around for everyone to use.
I have the melting chocolate thing, but I find that it is only useful for small amounts because so much gets stuck on the inside walls!
"Salter"? I hardly know 'er!!
That cutting board would be great for a chef in training. Great to practice on, Loved the pepper corer too.
Instant pot! :-)
get a portable hot plate/stove and a few pots, and you could do your washing up in the bathroom
also get a toaster oven, they are quite inexpensive
I second the instant pot. It's a sautee pot, slow cooker and pressure cooker in one. It can also make some bread/cakes, cook rice, and make yogurt! It can do so much for one little thing
Why do I sit here watching hours of gadgets? 😂 keep up the good work x
On bed rest doing a Baratheon
Get we’ll soon
I love stuffed pepers! That little gadget for coring them looks like a good way to have kids help in the kitchen. Fun video!
No Barry, it's hot everywhere. You're not alone in suffering taking a trip through Satan's bum, we suffer right along with you. :)
Ladderthief1 I'm mean it's winter here
Yup. I got winter...
It’s just Michigan here. We’re used to hell and we’re used to the North Pole, similarly to the elusive Canadians.
Quilted Dream For sure! I'm here in Flint where it's been in the high 70s low 80s all summer. I'm not use to this. Lived here all my life.
Is the water still all fucked up?
I love that cutting board!
The pepper core remover could be helpful. All the others not so much! It was fun watching you try them though 👍😄💚
Even that one, it seems to waste 20% of the flesh, and it's barely faster than using a knife.
It could be good for people who have poor knife skills, but want to make stuffed peppers?
Lucifer Bailey Or for letting kids help cook. Stuffed peppers would be a great recipe for getting kids cooking.
Love your videos! Love your goofiness and your puns!
What’s orange and sounds like a parrot?
A carrot!
What do you call a boomerang that doesn't return? A stick.
What's brown and sticky? A stick.
What's red and clumsy? A blood clot.
Love my Fred The Obsessive Chef cutting board!
The egg thing u had upside down
Toni Alves no he didn’t because what your supposed to do is crack the egg into the sun and the whites would go out underneath the overhang. Also the white going outside the edges of the mould is totally normal
15:00 about that firm brush thing, it's for scrubbing off your cuticles. Not as painful as it sounds
It was 110f (43c) where I live today.
Wow!
How are you still alive?
Lol yeah but my energy bill might kill me.
For the cheese grayer I recommend the pampered chef one, and using a harder cheese--I use Parmesan--and it works perfectly.
OHMYGOD!!!!! I neeeeeed that obsessive chef board!!!!!!
For the silicon egg shape, it helps if the pan is perfectly flat. A lot of pans have a slight curve now.
We have a few of those cheese graters and find them super useful for Parmesan specifically! As it's a harder cheese it doesn't all stick, clog, and congeal. Plus with harder cheeses you have to use a lot of force to grate them with normal box graters - and so this gadget makes it much much easier!
I have a 20 year old version of the salter grater. It’s made of metal, the handle is welded to the barrel and it works brilliantly
Watching Barry chop the vegetables was so soothing! I think I'm the type of person who needs that cutting board XD
I have a cheese grater likes that. The handle is attached to the grater itself and it works like a charm. And that thing is 10+ years old and still works like a charm
A man apron. Because we need to start gendering aprons now 😂
I found your channel a few days ago and it’s been so dang enjoyable!
That capsicum one would be so good for making stuffed capsicums !! So easy.
The pepper thing would be awesome to make stuffed peppers! And cheese stuff jalapeño And so much easier lol
I love how at 6:12 the chocolate was melted already and he put it back in the microwave and complained about it being burnt! 😂😂
Some of these would be great for kids too, like that chopping board could help the girls learn how to chop veg to size, or the brush could be used if someone wanted kids to help but didn't trust them with a peeler.
That cutting board might be a help for all of the mini food videos! Would love to see more of those if it's something you still enjoy doing!
Being a owner of a style of the egg design tool you don't separate the yoke the gap allows the white to run and fill without the yoke moving they are awesome
that pug is so cute
Yesss!!! My weekly dose of MVK 💙 love you!
I have a soda stream, not an 80s one though. I got it like 3 years ago. I use it all the time, it is by far my favourite kitchen gadget. Especially since I love soda water. For anyone who likes anything carbonated, they are really useful, and highly practical.
You said that melter looks like so many things, but the first thing I thought was "It looks like a health potion!" XD
That chopping board definitely looks like something I would adore, then spend too long preparing things on.
Veggie brushes have been like a standard in every Finnish kitchen for decades... And you should scrub it under running water... :D
That Obsessive Chef Cutting Board bit was oddly relaxing to watch, You are right, you could do an ASMR video with it :D
Barry I absolutely love these series. Definitely need myself a barathon 😂
Furnace friday?? Uhh Barry, it's Sunday!!! Sunburn Sunday? Searing Sunday? Sizzling Sunday?
With the chocolate melting pot I read that the more successful melts used premium chocolate, had put the lid on loose, used 10 second blasts because they had a higher wattage (so it depends on your microwave wattage... one person had 700 watt microwave snd had to put it for two 30 second blasts on low and then high), and stir it in between using the back of a spoon so it would fit into the container.
You can also use it for white chocolate and butter. You can turn it inside out to clean it in the dishwasher.
Omg I love the cutting board
Barry I love your videos!! They have gotten me back into cooking!
I love this series lmao. I don’t watch many 20+ minute videos, but I always watch these through the entire way.
As always (won’t ever change), great stuff Barry! 👍
