    Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

    Since it's difficult to get everything wrong, I look for something that did work in a failed painting in addition to looking for things to improve on in the future.

I was stuck in painting a bunch of flowers and frustrated about the outcome but now i will just go on, finish it and work on the next paintings. I think thats a good advice to not spend too much time on a painting that frustrates you. I will just do it better on the next canvas =) Keep up your cool videos man!

    The most liberating thing with oil painting is the idea that there are no mistakes that can't be fixed. You are never committed or obliged in any way to accept the way things are; you are always in control. It's such a basic concept, but it takes a while to sink in.

    This is really timely. I'm working on a portrait now and felt like something was off and realized it was some angles on the features (head slightly tilted) and had to fix it. Also going to try the phone camera and mirror tips! Thank you!

      The phone mirror trick works so well that you will be scared to do it for paintings bc you know its going to show all the mistakes. lol but once you see the mistakes you can fix it. I rarely paint a portrait without mistakes I have to fix.

    I try to do all of the things you said. I am new to painting. I’ve only tried acrylics but have a small oil set I’m excited/scared to try. I ask for criticism and I definitely see what I did right and what I did wrong. I take away something from every painting. It’s all a learning experience. The only problem is that my friends always say “it’s great!” When I wish they would say “that works but that doesn’t”. I would probably already know but it would be nice to get that feedback from another set of eyes.

    A question for you: what are your thoughts on varnishing finished paintings? Can you talk about the different kinds of varnishes and the types of finish they put on oil paintings? Natural and old-fashioned varnishes compared to modern, synthetic varnishes and how they protect paintings over time? Many thanks in advance and keep up the great work! 🎨

    Just stumbled upon your channel. This is wonderful and clarifies a lot of things my college-level painting teacher did not explain.
    Here's my question: I have this painting I did a few years ago and there were problems with it. I set it aside to think about it, and life being life, it's been a few years. Can I now paint over it *as if it was a fresh painting*, since it's been a few years and, more than likely, the underlayers are dry? Thanks.

  • @desilove9571
    @desilove9571 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello Chris! You are awesomely helpful! Thank you for your education 🙏🏼. My question is, how often do you stop painting and let it “dry” before returning to paint. My paintings start to blend if I paint for multiple hours and I feel I have to let it dry for a week or so. By the time I come back to it, I’ve lost my vision and never finish. What am I missing?

  • @susiesunshine1969
    @susiesunshine1969 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love the topics. I've done a lot of writing and revision is part of the writing process. Is there a word in the painting process that means the same thing, where changing portions of the painting is built into the process of developing the final product?

    • @paintcoach
      @paintcoach  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes! I've written a few movie scripts and I compare painting to writing a lot. They say writing is rewriting and I like to say painting is a lot of pushing and pulling. You push the darks and then pull back with the lights. Push the warms and then pull back with cools.

    • @susiesunshine1969
      @susiesunshine1969 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I only feel like this about my plein air paintings, I can paint great in the studio but when I go outside I am so nervous, I’m frantically trying to match colors that are constantly changing, I’m struggling to break down complex shapes and I end up with a muddy jumbled mess and it honestly makes me unable to even get behind an easel for months afterwards. My last painting I almost just threw it in the garbage but I just stuck it in my panel holder and I’m afraid to actually look at it again. I couldn’t even be bothered to clean the paint off my palette. I hate my day job but I could never pursue art as a career because I’m like this…

    Hey,im considering switching to painting on hardboard panels.Are you painting these on one take or do you allow layers to dry?I tried painting on a hardboard panel that came with GAMBLIN paint one time but was put off from seeing the white background.Now that I have a few years of experience, id rather a smoother surface as far as portraits and skies in my landscape paintings.Do you paint directly on your primed surface or do you apply some acrylic ground.Sorry for al the questions

    • @paintcoach
      @paintcoach  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not a fan of the panels. They are very slick and make controlling the paint difficult. I like to use linen. This one done on a centurion oil primed linen pad. Linen gives me a smoother surface than canvas. I tone my linen wish a wash before painting to get rid of the white bc it makes it harder to judge values on white

      Wipe it off if it's wet or if it's dry you can sand down any thick parts and paint over it. You don't need to gesso over it. If you do want to gesso over you want to make sure you sand off as much of the paint as you can.

      It's not impossible to paint without turpentine. An alternative for it is odorless mineral spirits but it needs ventilation too.
      Or ditch it completely, use only linseed oil as medium and clean brushes with baby oil followed by soap+water.
