Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

I needed this. Thank you. Feeling frustrated with people’s excitement of Ai art. It made me question the purpose of art. I’m most fulfilled when painting.

This is very inspirational. I have found that painting helps me deal with other difficult and complex parts of my life as well. I agree that the benefits of painting far outweigh the costs. Thanks for this!

Ethan Rogers thanks! Glad you got something out of it. I didn’t even touch on the fact that the actual act of painting can be therapeutic.

This talk is indeed só inspiring and motivating. It touches on some so crucial fundamentals / the heart of painting, I never heard about these topics before ...
      Intelligent .
      Great .
Also, Chris, I'm so excited and wondering and interested in what you would say about the therapeutic aspects of painting.
      For example:
Do you need to be 'sick' or so to paint ?!? (hahaha),
what are the therapeutic benefits/effects of painting ?
      and so on ...
Please, seriously, another great paint talk ?

You are so right, the job is always the same, everyday the same - never seeing a result. Painting keeps me sane, it's my way off shutting out the world. And I also love to learn, actually I always learn something.

So true, painting is such a satisfying artform. On top of having tangible products of your work and progress, the appreciation I’ve developed for color has added to the experience of day to day life. Everything I look at teaches me something.

Sometimes I'll simply turn on some music, get out my stuff and put color on the canvas. Do that for a bit and wipe it off. Simply getting away for a few minutes is what I need.

I went downtown and painted at the Farmers Market today. Several people stopped to look and chat. What I’m really having trouble with is simplifying crowds, groups of people, passers by - that kind of stuff. Don’t know if you’ve ever covered this, but I’d appreciate some pointers. Thanks!

Nowadays young people are only more and more interested in digital arts and stuff.. That makes me really sad and it feels kind of disappointed and alone that they aren't really excited by painting traditionally. And the thing you talked about accomplishing everyday is also totally true.. Oh btw, I am 21 years who is really drawn to fine arts, painting everyday.

painting is therapeutic, great way to express yourself without throwing empty words around. its almost like meditation, teaches you the power of observation.

Chris, I found your comments very insightful. I am a senior, and other of my cohort agree with me, that today's technologies do indeed stifle creativity. It was gratifying to hear a young person, like yourself, agree with our observations. Obviously painting also allows your mind to consider more deeply!

Yes, it’s kind of scary to think about how fast things are changing. I’m only 30 and I catch myself saying “ oh in my day” or “kids these days” hahahah

Your advice is helpful. I painted today. I experimented with water colors and discovered new patterns to make on the paper. It was nice.

Yes It is evidence, it says "'I was here"! A conversation with the one!
Visual art, painting is a singular experience but as human being we need the other physical, it can be a very lonely experience ( for the physical). Thus sharing is necessary activity. Thanks Chris!

I decided to start painting after over 20 years off from a year of art classes at the community college. My teachers and students thought was good at it....but I’m not good at anymore. Will I get better or have missed the boat? I’m 68. Seeing as how bought everything I need to do this thing. Everything you say I can relate to. Wish I had your TH-cam videos 20 years back!! Yeah so I think I’ll be painting until I die. Your reasons why are so realistic. Your a very kind soul so thank you!

When I have time, I occasionally join an art class and the students are often seniors because they have more time to paint. They do some of the best paintings because I think they actually have time to finish the homework. Many of them have been in weekly painting classes for 5 years with the same teacher and their paintings are fantastic. I have also joined an open studio art club and most of the painters are also seniors. There are no formal teachers but we all critique and support each other. It is never too late to get better, just need to keep practicing.

@@ghotiemama I don’t have that! Sounds great. I live far out rural no classes and so I made a room for art and just go solo but I loved the groups when I did 17 units at a jr college. I did my own thing and so did they but I was fixed to the idea of doing it ....I’m getting that way solo. I did love seeing every body’s work for critiques.

@@ghotiemama also im reading Alla Prima II... I found a pdf file with paintings all for sale....$9.00 ....the book is recommended a lot so I finally am reading it. It’s easy to relate to! The info has supplied me with a few games to play.....that’s what I call certain challenges. It’s around $100? I forget. I’m a 4th way thru it.

Example of best game I need to get rid of to many values and get balance.....stepping back “relentlessly” John singer Sargent did this. About 8 feet away from model and also squinting more....and staying i. The blocking in and values stage the longest. Sergeant was said to “push paint around” for das sometimes doing a block in. I do need to move closer and stay longer.....student stage and only at 4 month mark. It’s something to be patient about!

Love your videos, I've been a follower for a long time. You have given me the inspiration to paint which I have started, but I have a question about this "mother hue?" My colors clash and contrast too much I think. I read somewhere about mixing one color into all the colors on my palette for plein air? If so how do I choose the common color? If this is even a thing. It makes sense because I think all the colors are under the same light, but does all of the colors share a yellow if outside? Any help would be awesome. Thanks!

    • @paintcoach

Jason Was Bourne well I have never done digital painting so I can’t say much. I know you still need to know basic skills like color and perspective. Whenever I watch the digital speed painting videos it makes me so envious that if they draw something in the wrong spot they can just drag it to the right spot lol

My brush gets loaded with paint when mixing, then it's really hard to apply it deliberately with such bulbous unwieldy bristles. Any advice? Palette knife? I see you don't often use one for mixing.
