    Tony MacAlpine spent some time with Premier Guitar during his Nashville stop on the 2014 Maximum Security tour. The tour’s namesake album was released over 25 years ago, and the playing is as impressive now as it was then. MacAlpine’s current setup stays true to his past tones while incorporating a few new twists.
    Tony uses two custom Ibanez 7-string RG Prestige guitars. Both guitars feature active EMG pickup with a push/pull control for clean and dirty tones.
    MacAlpine uses Ernie Ball .009-.052 strings on all of his guitars.

    I saw Tony twice this year at The Iridium in NY and you know what, if you give him a 100 dollars guitar he will play it with the same intensity and clearity. He is a fucking genius.

    Tony Mac's is one of the ultimate tone masters!
    He's a virtuoso in guitar and piano.
    Yes...T-Mac is a concert pianist too.
    I like the simplicity of his rig. Amazing!

    First off, massive fan of Tmac and all of his works including PSMS, Planet X and alike. First time I watched this I was shocked that he didn't really know/care about the specifics of his guitar. Then it struck me that I'd heard him mention somewhere he doesn't see himself as a guitarist rather a musician using the guitar as a tool to express himself. He's also an absolute boss on piano so I'm not surprised he doesn't know what wood his guitar is constructed of and why should he care? It produces the sound he wants! Very honest and simplistic rig rundown. Now I love it!

      the wood that he said he didn't know what it was was the 2 skunk stripes running down the length of the neck

    • @BillDerBerg
      @BillDerBerg 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The extra wood on the neck is filler and is only for strengthening it because it's no a standard 6 string

      Might explain why there is no T Mac sig guitar - he may have chosen not to have one - must be plenty of product guys that want his endorsement/signature on their gear ... Just asking the question??

    Tony isn't being dense here like someone mentioned, he's just very humble and low key. I've met him a few times already, watched him perform several times solo, and with Bunny Brunnel. He's actually very humble. almost shy, but way cool and very down to earth. He's a joker too, as he did the bunny ears thing over my head when I took a pic with him once lol =-)

    In the 80's he did an in store at a shop I worked in. While they were setting up a simple ADA MP1 rig for him, he sat at a piano. He's a much better Pianist, he studied classical Piano from a very young age.

    That Maximum Security album still sounds incredible to this day. Only thing that could have made it better would have been to have Billy Sheehan return on bass (he was busy with David Lee Roth at the time). Then again, my head would have exploded from awesome overload! Rock on, Tony!

    Tony could't give less shit what components guitar is made of, it works so he plays it, bedroom players like me seem to care much more about gear wood and other crap 'cause we can't play like tony so we have to concentrate on bullshit like tone wood and boutique pedals.

    • @Strato13
      @Strato13 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with you.
      Years ago I worried about the material aspect of what made guitars, amps, and pedals.
      And as I've gotten progressively better on guitar over the years, I've learned I can sound better with a Squier, and my broken in Katana mini now vs myself from 2009, with my now beloved 2009 Fender Stratocaster and old Marshall.
      Gear is good, but I think it's also relative to how you play.
      Tony Sounds better with his humble setup vs other players with their 2,000$ pedalboards worth of gear.

      If you listen to what's being said in the interview, you might notice that Tony at some point mentions that back in the 80ies when he/they recorded Maximum Security, they didn't have access to the plethora of gadgets that exists today. Tony can PLAY - to me it's evident that his technique has perfected itself beyond the need for gadgets.

      Joepius Paffus Yes so did many other players from that time..Tmac is a monstrous player..He is one of the most technically evolved musicians hence its quite surprising that he put up that show..I was expecting he'd b throwing knowledge like Guthrie or like PG or sumtin..To play with Vai u gotta b of Godly level which he is, hence the interview came of a surprise

    • @rmsolympic1
      @rmsolympic1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Tony knows his stuff - completely. However, he never really has focused on effects/gadgets, and I think I remember him saying so in an interview years ago. In fact, during one of the interviews/conversations in Vai's Astoria DVD, he cracked on Vai for using so many effects.

    • @tibrent
      @tibrent 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joepius Paffus
      But this isn't a segment about technique, it is a segment about gear & really knowledge of it. Tony is no doubt an amazing player, everyone knows that, or should. But these segments are about learning the gear the artists play & why they play it.

    Host overly appreciative of being asked how he's doing. It was a rhetorical question, dude. It's like hi. Do you seriously think the illustrious Tony MacAlpine cares how you're doing? As if, dawg.
