Kana's Ballad. The first track in my "Archetypal Girl" series, a homage to golden era (90s-00s) Japanese romantic anime and visual novel game OSTs, along with the charming, "archetypal" girl characters adopted during this time.
I started this track in 2015, way before I coined Jazz:Rouge, let alone Archetypal Girl, when I lacked a strong musical identity and skills. Incidentally, I started both this and my Egg Quarters remix in the same year. Much like Egg Quarters, Kana's Ballad emerged from a decision to keep things "simple" and "true to my tastes", and soulful japanese soundtrack music has always been my biggest influence growing up.
Working on this track periodically throughout the years, it has seen many revisions since its original incarnation. I ultimately stuck with it, because it was, much like Egg Quarters, one of the first that felt like an authentic creation.
I just wrote down what came to me at the time, but this track is my attempt to encapsulate that special "sound" that you find in stuff like Japanese city-pop and golden era soundtracks. That nostalgic and incredibly beautiful, almost tear-jerking feeling that a lot of these kinds of tracks evoke.
There's some "modern" compositional stuff in here, including a degree of jazz/blues flair, but this track is extremely "Japanese" in its style - from a simple melody featuring very straight melodic rhythms over a straight drum beat, to the chords and melodic bassline. I slaved away trying to shape the sounds just right - to give a soft, ethereal and wistful ambience, like the source material that I'm cribbing from.
Kana herself is of the pure and angelic maiden/Goddess kind of archetype. Think Belldandy from Ah! My Goddess!, or maybe a Disney princess if you're unfamiliar.
The simulated UI was very fun to make. I layered scenes in OBS and just did a one-shot take alongside the music. Animating Kana's blinking and smile at the end were also super fun to do.
Honestly, I could go on and on. But I hope you like it. I hope this track warms your heart and fills your soul nearly as much as some of my favourite japanese soundtracks have done throughout my life.
