Natsu's Waltz. The second track in my "Archetypal Girl" series, recapturing the magic of anime/visual novel OSTs from 90s-00s golden era of Japanese media and the archetypal female characters that blessed this time.
Right off the bat, Natsu is a different archetype from Kana. Kana is the angel/goddess archetype, while Natsu is the archetype of the mysterious "divine child". Still magical, but more mischievous, childlike and possessing more of a "trickster" kind of energy. The cheeky, mischievous younger sister type character is, needless to say, ubiquitous as an anime trope, and so should be quite recognisable.
Her tune is therefore correspondingly more whimsical and fanciful. The motifs are still very Japanese, but there is more jazz in here. From the melodic licks to the prominent swing/waltz rhythm. In terms of influences, I would say it's somewhere between Pangya and Klonoa.
The swing beat that skips along with some weird and wacky sounds peppered in hopefully captures the excitability, curious wonder and innocence of Natsu's character. A fairy-tale-like adventure into a wonderful dream world. This kind of feeling was what I was aiming for. You might also notice that I chose a lot of amusement park imagery for the backgrounds in the video. There's just something about a fairground or amusement park at night that oozes childlike excitement and wonder. Honestly, there is a lot more to unpack here, and the inspiration for Natsu's world and vibe comes from a great number of places.
As such, I hope that it serves as a faithful homage to the awe-inspiring source material that I am paying my respects to. The beauty of Japanese art is truly a gift!
