Biggest fear? Probably a cathedral or however you spell it after you have a heart attack. Father had 4 heart attacks & he told me about them before he passed he said passing a kidney was easier than having a tube running up your male organ. Now phobias Probably something huge swallowing me like a great white shark or killer whale.
When I first saw this Arachnophobia, I sort of felt the same as you Jen. But then I realized it was a different kind of monster movie. Just with one of nature's extravagant creatures. Fear for me is whatever the worse case scenario may be in life and that can't be reversed or avoided.
Hi Jen, you asked early on if they used real spiders. The answer to that question is "YES". If you look in the credits, you'll see one of the crew was listed as "spider wrangler". If you research the trivia on this film, you'll find that they imported 40,000 spiders from Central America that were totally harmless. the only "fake" spiders were the extreme close ups where they showed their eyes and the egg sack scene. The bigger (hand sized) ones were common tarantulas which are also totally harmless. I even had a tarantula as a pet when I was a teenager. Fun Fact: Jeff Daniels said in an interview that the scene in the basement was completely real, and the fear on his face was real. He had over 100 spiders on his body. Real spiders. He also said that making that movie almost caused him to quit acting as a career.
Rest in peace Julian Sands (the main scientist). He went missing on a hiking/mountain climbing trip last year. He was found 5 months later. Underrated actor.
One sad thing about Arachnophobia is I'm reminded of the talent that was Julian Sands. Sands was also a dedicated mountaineer, but went missing in the San Gabriel Mountains near Los Angeles back in January 2023. His body has since been found. An unexpected and sad end for a much admired actor.
John Goodman is absolutely hysterical in this film. He's one of those actors where I'll watch anything he's in. So glad you watched this, I love it! Thank you for traumatizing yourself for us! 😂
Jen, I’m not even afraid of spiders, and your reaction just creeped me out. I used to rescue my daughter from spiders that were in the sink or tub. Her reaction was kind of cute when I “saved” her. But, eventually, I just started handing her a Monopoly style card “Get Rid of one Spider Free”. She would have to hand it back to me to get rid of one spider. Eventually she wanted to keep the card more than she wanted me to get rid of the spider. The card, “a safety token” became what she wanted to keep for herself. So, then, she started catching the spiders herself. Weird that it worked out like that. Once I showed her how to “deport” them outside so they could continue their lives catching other bugs, she was happy with that. Collecting them became fun. I was a bug catcher as a kid, too.
You know, I feel terrible making assumptions about a person I never met, but I'm starting to suspect that Jen may have a fear of spiders 😄 Cheers to you for putting yourself through this just for the reaction, I'm glad you had fun with the movie in editing.
The spiders are called Avondale spiders. They're a large huntsman spider that immigrated from Australia to Auckland New Zealand. They chose them for the movie because they readily scuttle about. You'll especially love this Jen...they love living together, and sometimes communities of them number in the hundreds. Who said we don't have scary wildlife in New Zealand? Hahaha
They used real life "Huntsmen" spiders for the movie. They're harmless (to humans), they just move at a SUPER FREAKY gallop which scares the crap out of sane people.
6:35 They used mostly real non-venomous spiders and tarantulas (it’s kinda like herding cats but there’s a way to get them to do certain things for the camera), but “the General” was an animatronic created and operated by a friend of mine, Chris Walas, who’s famous for his work in several films of the 80s and 90s, particularly THE FLY (1986) and its sequel (which he directed), GREMLINS (1984) and its sequel, ENRMY MINE (1985), as well as the melting faces at the end of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (1981); he also worked on visual effects and/or special makeup effects for such films as DRAGONSLAYER (1981), SCANNERS (1981), RETURN OF THE JEDI (1983), and many others.
Yes, in SA there is a spider species that reach 12 inch diameter. Its name is Goliath Birdeater and is a species of tarantula. But, its venom is not more harmful that wasp sting. Still terrifying nonetheless.
Love your reactions and bravery, Jen. We all know these are just movies, but sometimes they can affect us, in the worst way. And yes, they used real spiders! :)
I can feel your pain in this reaction Jen. I also hate spiders and I had a hard time getting through this movie when I watched it for the first time, I give you major props for making it to the end.
This is nearly a comedy, for me. I’m not afraid of spiders at all. I love John Goodman’s character. John Goodman stars in one of my favorite movies, the absolutely terrifying Red State.
Largest spider I've seen was in my bedroom after we moved in. Sitting on the arm of my chair, size of a dinner plate. Explained all the dessicated mice in the basement.
I remember seeing this when I was about 8 or 9 and it scared the living the shit out of me lol! But its also that rare (successful) balance of horror and comedy.
RIP Julian Sands, (guy who plays the English Doctor)...body was found recently in the wilderness in California, after going missing. Mysterious circumstances...some say the spiders finally got him.
I actually saw this on the big screen when it was released, I also saw another film with spiders and that was Eight Legged Freaks , not bad for someone absolutely terrified of spiders. And that's a big Yes Jen , Jurassic Park, all 6 of them and the 4 Monster Verse movies too
Strike this woman a medal! Your commitment is appreciated. There are in fact whole species specifically known as jumping spiders. My favorite "evil bugs" movie is still 1975's Bug, with super-roaches which spell out your name on a wall when you come home, those and the Zantis from the original Outer Limits episode The Zanti Misfit. Now you're all set for Tarantula, about a tarantula the size of a house that required a young Clint Eastwood to fly overhead and bomb it, I kid you not.
"Did they use real spiders, or animatronic ones?" Pasted from a review someone else said: The small spiders used in the film were Avondale spiders (Delena Cancerides), a harmless species from New Zealand that were provided by Landcare Research in Auckland. Despite their fierce appearance, this spider is a docile member of the crab-spider family and is, in fact, harmless to humans. They were not allowed back in New Zealand for quarantine reasons. The giant "spider" used in the film was a species of a bird-eating tarantula, which can attain a legspan of eight inches or more. That aside, pretty sure they did use robots and spider dummies for the more crueler scenes like the spider being crushed into goo or the big baddie set on fire. Pretty sure even the dead spider in the box was a prop; because who WOULD pick up the real thing, dead or alive? Well, aside from people who like them of course, but I mean most people don't.
Jen you were so effing brave! Very proud of you. Definitely creeped me out a little watching as a kid, but there's enough funny and goofy bits to make it not too bad. And yeah John Goodman is a treasure
Hey Jen, I follow this fellow from Australia who had initially turned his 32 acre farm into a massive daycare for dogs, and then into a rehab center for abused, aggressive, and otherwise unwanted dogs after covid caused a shutdown of operations. I mention him because I watched a video where he was out with his 2 year old in the late evening, and when he was filming the little one , there was a spider on his face. Actually, it was a Huntsman and it was around 4 inches in diameter. He took it right in stride, gently took it off his face, and still goes out in the evenings with the boy, and his 7 year old daughter to look for and observe the spiders around the house.
The directorial debut of renowned producer Frank Marshall and debut film of the now-defunct Disney studio, Hollywood Pictures. One of my favorite movies as an kid. I had a fascination with Spiders. Just because of how unique they were. The movie displays a great use of real and animatronic spiders too. When this movie came out, i was so blown away. Essentially a B-movie with a bigger budget, serious yet campy. Right up there with The MEG, Anaconda and Lake Placid. I had the comic book adaptation of the movie. The moment in which Ross Jennings first encoutered his 'Arachnophobia' was revealed in one panel. Terrifying especially from how it was drawn. When he talked about it in the movie and it didn't feel as scary. But you can tell he felt some kind of way. RIP to Julian Sands (Dr. James Atherton). I forgot he passed away earlier in 2023.
Godspeed Julian Sands who plays Dr. James Atherton at the beginning of the movie and later on in the film. He went Hiking in the California San Gabriel Mountains during the winter time earlier this year. His remains were found 5 months later by other hikers.
"What's it called when you study butterflies?" Lepidopterology 😅 I only know that because of the cartoon Venture Brothers (which you would adore Jen - villains, lairs, and old school Johnny Quest vibes)
I had to shrink my video player to watch this one and cover parts of the video with my hands so I was only looking at Jen's reaction. And I was looking around the room for spiders the whole time, just like Jen.
You are on fire with these Halloween reactions Jen! On a sidenote, I'm really Happy to see this movie finally getting some wider recognition- for the longest time it seemed destined to remain a forgotten relic if the 90s
I just realized for those whom enjoyed Julian Sands here, while looking for his body of work he has appeared in many supernatural themed films of varying quality beyond Warlock which I saw. I also discovered he went missing during a hike this year and 5 months later his remains were found. I still remember his culturally disturbing film Boxing Helena which many saw as amputee p4rn. I also enjoyed the senior/junior Doctor conflict which also appears a year later in Doc Hollywood with Michael J. Fox.
You're not alone, Jen. This one never bothered me, and I always thought it was more cheesy than scary... but I had plenty of friends and family who were creeped out when it came out on VHS. It's triggering for a lot of people. 🤓
I don’t comment loads but it needs to be said “well done Jen…” I know some might see it as just a film or won’t understand facing fears but you did so well. You did brilliant keeping it together actually making a great review wile trying to deal with your fear as well. Always a highlight when I see you have a review go live and this was just as awesome 🫶🏻🤙🏻👍🏻👏🏻👌🏻
It's pretty awesome that you could watch this movie, despite your arachnophobia. Your bravery is very admirable! And yes, there are some spiders in the world that can jump.
You know when you should be really worried about a spider? When it doesn't feel like something is tickling your skin but more like someone pressing is their fingers on you! And the dog or cat haven't been seen for ages! 🕸🕷😱
If your terrified of spiders, God Bless you on this one, because your going to need it. LOL I'm kind of indifferent to spiders, as I don't like them, but I would have a tarantula as a pet if I could. But this film for sure freaks me out, and I haven't watched it all the way through since probably my original viewing decades ago.
Pretty sure the majority of spiders in the movie are 100% real. They made sure to choose a species that was very docile/non venomous and friendly around people. And yes Jen spiders can jump! So many different kinds out in the world that can do all kinds of interesting and unique things. Now you gotta watch Eight Legged Freaks 😂
I’m totally with you Jen. This movie creeps me out. What helps me is the giant spider constantly keeps changing size. Also Jeff Daniels was given stunt pay for when the one lands on his face
20 seconds in, and I have to send a like before I continue. I agree with you. I saw this at the movie theater when it came out. Scared the bejeezus out of me!
Thanks for facing your fear Jen, it was an adorable reaction. I too was scared of spider in my youth, but after an unlikely befriending of a jumping spider my mood softened.
This was so well made and fun, even though most people are scared of spiders. Good for us you overcame your fear Jen👍💓. R.I.P Julian Sands much missed and great British actor.💓
Felt your anxiety through the screen... impressive that you got to the end of this and even managed a few chuckles! 👏👏 Thank goodness you had that blanket to protect you 🤗 "eww eww! It scurried!" Laughed out loud at the comment
Top notch reaction! Congrats on battling your fear and I was laughing the entire time when you said that maybe this movie might help you overcome. Nope! "Turn on the lights, wake your wife, call the police!" You're a complete gem! : )
Jen, I think you are so scared of our arachnid friends you originally misspelled Arachnophobia. 🕷️I don't blame you. 🤣 Looking forward to this, I hate spiders, and seeing them crawling out of the corpse's nose in this is gross. 🤢😁 It's a pretty good creepy movie. R.I.P. Julian Sands. Edit: Watching Jen's reactions is hilarious!
I bought a tarantula when I was a teenager, primarily because I thought they were neat arachnids featured in nifty 50s sci-fi movies and kept my brother out of my room due to his fear of spiders. I did place weights on the terrarium lid after I noticed it was strong enough to actually lift the lid. I read somewhere that wherever you happen to be, there is a spider within 3 feet of you. The only time I was ever truly unsettled by a spider was an encounter with a huntsman in a metal storage container - it moved from the floor to the ceiling so quickly that I immediately turned around going NOPE NOPE NOPE.
Jen, you were very brave, sort of, and it looked like you handled this movie very well. Jeff Daniels & John Goodman are great. This creature flick is very humorous and has a great B-Movie feel to it. Great job, Jen! You are a very fun reactor.
When i was young my family and i saw this in the theaters. My mom is terrified of spiders, but there was a woman sitting in the row right behind us who screamed through half of the movie. Talk about an immersive experience lol
I hate spiders. Where I use too live their were wolf spiders under the front porch. They came out at night even with the light on. Don't live there anymore. I sleep with a light on at night. One time I counted 8 at once on front porch at my old house. Hello from Pa USA 🇺🇸 💖 ❤❤.
As an arachnophobe myself, I've watched two reactions to this already recently, and I will continue to torture myself because the lovely folks (especially Jen, and her Serious Girl Spectacles) of the Reaction World are putting themselves through it for our entertainment here on TH-cam. Cheers and Happy Weekend from the East Coast. 🥃✌❤ 1:01 Every experience with this movie makes me acutely aware of how many of them may be surrounding me right now. 🕸🕷
I used to be pretty terrified of spiders. My version of immersion therapy was to study them, learn about their biology and living habits. When that did nothing to reassure me, I simply resigned myself to eventual death by spider venom, and now every day I go without being bit, feels like a bonus!
My scariest encounter with bugs. I was seven sleeping in my bed felt something crawling on my face so instinctively I just knocked it off with my hand and when I turned on the light I saw a centipede crawling into my air conditioning vent!😳😱
Great movie and I luv John Goodman in this. Delbert and his theme music really stole the show! Jen thanks for putting yourself and your fears out there for us, your viewers! Bless your heart ❤! This is a fun movie if you don't fear spiders! I have a fear of heights so i know the nervous feeling! I haven't seen you so squeamish in all your reactions but you really took one for the team! Thanks I enjoyed the great reaction! Luv ya Jen ❤️💛
Kudos to you Jenny penny im half way thru and I was wondering what that "pc sound" like a run stoppage was and then saw that You used it when you cursed during the video 🤣😂, Thanks for making me look around for a second lol My speakers are strong !
I absolutely LOVED your jabbering throughout your determined effort to make it through this movie. On a personal note: my wife and I traveled the California Hwy 1 back in '92 and stayed a couple nights in Cambria JUST after filming there for this film wrapped. There was still lighting gear and spiderweb and body chalk outline props all over the quaint coastal town. Pretty cool. People there didn't even know what the movie was called; just "something about spiders", as if all the webbing wasn't too obvious. 😂
There's a movie from 1981 called Deadly Blessing, and right in the trailer, a spider drops into a woman's mouth while she's sleeping. In 1977, William Shatner starred in Kingdom of the Spiders, about tarantulas taking over a small town. Then there's The Giant Spider Invasion from 1975, about spiders coming through a portal from another dimension. The largest one is giant!
This was amazing. Pity there aren't many other good spider movies like this. I've seen you on edge, but wrapped so tight in the blanket with the head popping out the top was hilarious. I am arachnophobic. I rented a basement for 7 or so years, and they were EVERYWHERE down there. First couple days there I saw one dragging a big ass bug up a brick wall. Couldn't sleep for a week. Eventually I just had to come to terms with it and deal with them. Plus, they kept the other undesirable bugs down there at bay. I even started trust exercises with the aptly named "Toilet Spider" who took up residence in my bathroom down there. Would see him every morning, and we were on a "You stay down there, and I'll stay up here. And we'll leave each other alone" kind of deal. Excited to see whats on the slate for next week! Here's to hoping it's holiday appropriate! :D
Jen you did awesome. Very entertaining reaction. Yeah what makes this movie scary is the thought of these events. I hope john goodman watches these and smiles
In the movie MATINEE, John Goodman plays a producer/director of B horror movies, promoting his latest feature in Florida during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He tells his young fans that the great thing about movies like his, and ARACHNOPHOBIA, for that matter, is that you feel the fear watching it, bur then, the lights come up, you stop outside, and everything is okay, and you start to think. "Wow, that was really great!". I don't know if that gives you peace, but it's still true😊
Oh, they most definitely jump... Found that out the hard way through an encounter with a GIGANTIC wolf spider in my basement. Most horror movies don't phase me one bit, but Arachnophobia might just be the scariest movie I've ever seen.
Every Autumn/Fall my UK garden has a mass outbreak of spiders. When webs appear everywhere. They all look like the same species, so I guess they breed at this time of the year. The webs show up well on misty mornings, covered in droplets.
Another great one. There is a species of spider that does live in colonies. But the reason they do that is because they need venom from lots of spiders to take down the larger animals needed to feed the colony. Also the larger of the 2 spiders IS the Queen. Female spiders are ALWAYS bigger than the male. Sometimes with a fully grown male being roughly 5% the size & mass of a fully grown female. The female will often eat the male after mating. It's actually VERY rare for a male to get away alive after mating. Hope everyone is having an amazing weekend & much love to everyone from here in the UK
This is probably the best spider movie ever made not counting Raiders of the Lost Ark’s opening sequence. There’s a television movie called Tarantulas: The Deadly Cargo which is a scarier than this because of its many large spiders. The Brazilian Wandering Spider is very real and very deadly with a very toxic bite that killed 14 people before anti-venom was developed specifically for it.
Being irrationally afraid of spiders has a name I can't remember what it is, some Greek word...spiderafraidia...eightlegfearfullness...i don't remember 🤣. Love the constant switch from sheer terror to musical interludes. GREAT reaction, also this movie helped get me over my fear of the little freaks, a little anyways, still not a fan but you know
I recently subscribed to your channel and from seeing your videos I enjoyed them and I wanted to say I love them all and it makes me feel good when I get down sometimes, thank you and keep making videos because your reactions are good and I just love your content
I'm a big spider fan. Used to have a tarantula. Love it when i see wild ones when I'm out on bike rides. All that being said this movie is still legit freaky lol

I had to shrink my video player to watch this one and cover parts of the video with my hands so I was only looking at Jen's reaction. And I was looking around the room for spiders the whole time, just like Jen.
You are on fire with these Halloween reactions Jen! On a sidenote, I'm really Happy to see this movie finally getting some wider recognition- for the longest time it seemed destined to remain a forgotten relic if the 90s
if anything, this film GAVE me arachnophobia lol
She mentioned 'exposure therapy' but how does that work if you have fear of dying? :P
You really are afraid of spiders 🕷️😅. Watching you with the blanket around your neck was more fun than the movie itself 😂
Fox.
Speaking of Lepidoptery, that's what M was enjoying a spot of in 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' when Bond visits his house.
You're not alone, Jen. This one never bothered me, and I always thought it was more cheesy than scary... but I had plenty of friends and family who were creeped out when it came out on VHS. It's triggering for a lot of people. 🤓
@@Progger11 What you said. There is nothing cheesy whatsoever about this movie, it's an exceptionally well-made horror comedy.
Awesome reaction to a great flick. So many legit jump scares haha! RIP Julian Sands.
John Goodman is the best part of this movie😃 Love his cheerful theme whenever he’s approaching lol
You've got a new coloured blanket. Hopefully, it will protect you. I have to wait until I get home from work before I can watch this 😩
I don’t comment loads but it needs to be said “well done Jen…” I know some might see it as just a film or won’t understand facing fears but you did so well.
The actor who played the professor, is Julian Sands, who disappeared on a hike in the US earlier this yr, whose body was more recently discovered.
25:53 Advice for what to do in case you happen to spot a spider on your wall. 😂
You know when you should be really worried about a spider?
When it doesn't feel like something is tickling your skin but more like someone pressing is their fingers on you!
And the dog or cat haven't been seen for ages! 🕸🕷😱
😂🤣😅😆😅🤣😂
"Just throw a shit merlot at it!" 😆
That's the kinda Jen commentary that keeps me coming back
RIP Julian Sands (Professor Atherton). He was a great actor, who sadly passed away early this year in a hiking accident.
This is the ultimate top tier heebie jeebie material ive ever seen, its incredibly effective at creeping me the eff out every time : P
Watching your reaction to this has been the Highlight of my Weekend. Thank You
The uncanny feeling about spiders comes from them not having muscles, but move by pneumatic pumping.
And all the Aussie people who saw the this were thinking "killer spiders? it's an everyday thing here".
Nope!
"Turn on the lights, wake your wife, call the police!"
You're a complete gem! : )
Jen, I think you are so scared of our arachnid friends you originally misspelled Arachnophobia. 🕷️I don't blame you. 🤣
Looking forward to this, I hate spiders, and seeing them crawling out of the corpse's nose in this is gross. 🤢😁 It's a pretty good creepy movie. R.I.P. Julian Sands.
Edit: Watching Jen's reactions is hilarious!
Good call, I corrected it! Thank you!
@@jenmurrayxo No problem! Oh, and it wasn't meant as a knock against you. 🥴
Perfect balance of Suspense, Comedy, Camp, and Horror. I had a pet tarantula when I was 10 years old. Not at all attracted to spiders as an adult.
Here's your LIKE, Jen! See ya in the next one! SHIVER Exit, stage right!
The Spiders used in this movie are called Avondale spiders (Delena Cancerides), a harmless species from New Zealand.
Much respect for sticking with this all the way through. Great reaction, as always!!!!!
1:01 Every experience with this movie makes me acutely aware of how many of them may be surrounding me right now.
Yes, they used *mostly* live spiders for this movie. You can kind of tell when it is just a practical effect.
Another good spider film is Kingdom Of The Spiders (1977).
Some spiders definitely jump, even pretty good distances. It’s terrifying lol.
No one ever seems to notice that the Photographer that gets bitten in the beginning. Is bitten out of revenge for killing that other spider.
True...and a Good Point.
You're a trooper, thanks for toughing it for us!
You must've cried when this won the poll. Thanks for the reaction!
Thank you for reacting to this, Jen. I know that it wasn't easy for you.
This should get a million views.
Such a good 90s flick....everything is so good in this all around...it has no business being this fun and good!
When Jen said, "We fly!" it made me imagine...
FLYING SPIDERS! 😃
One of my favorite horror comedies. I'm extremely arachnophobic and I love horror films so this one is one of my all time faves
Brilliant reaction! I'm not a fan of spiders either, but i've always loved this movie.
Certain images of spiders will make my ears buzz. I really had the smooth clammy ones.
Jenny you reminded me of my sister I used to have check her bedroom before she'd go to bed,she was and still is petrified of them.
This is by far my favorite reaction of yours...
So much fun..
