      @@ffffffffffffffff5840 The original problem, and the ongoing problem, is the implementation.
      It's something that those higher up should have been delagating to them long before any of this. None of it should have been a problem in the first place, and the mess now wouldn't have needed to be so thrown together and messy.
      Also, this isn't against the team working on DnD Beyond. They were told what to do, none of it's really their fault. They just have to deal with it all, which sucks.

    I don't disagree that D&D Beyond should have been prepared already for this kind of thing, but let's not forget that just a few days ago we were told that they were updating everything to the 2024 rules and you had to homebrew stuff yourself to go back to the 2014 rules. They're just scrambling because of people boycotting the site and removing subscriptions.
    I remember seeing one person joke on Reddit that come Sept 17th, there's going to be 200 pages of errata. I doubt it's going to be quite that high, but I can see 20 pages.

    • @cskelton
      @cskelton หลายเดือนก่อน +19

      What's really sad is that there's a real possibility that the reason they were going to auto update is because they realized the D&D Beyond team wasn't going to be able to add the required functionality in time.
      Knowing how this usually plays out, those devs are probably going through hell right now, catching flack from both the community and company leadership.

    One thing I learned when I was taking Technical Writing in college: you are never done editing. There is always something you would want to change. As for the stuff on D&D Beyond, they should have tested it better before it went live. The biggest problem is trying to merge two editions and have them both useable at the same time.

    Completely broken at the moment. At one point in character creation I was checking the feats that were granted by the backgrounds, cycling through them trying to find the right option to choose one that fit my backstory. None did so went to custom background and would just add stats and feat manually, but then I noticed that somehow my char had 5 origin feats assigned. Since they were granted by "my" background I couldn't even remove them manually, despite not actually having that background.

And then with the fan outrage, they ended up having to support both anyway. @kuroshinigami9143 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      eh its opportunity cost so i honestly think the spell is fine. it takes a whole action to cast, a full caster making the most of it is going to be in melee and without a feat wont have con save proficiency, and the concentration means you are giving up on other spells which are better (Animate Objects comes to mind for 5th level), so while its a very strong spell it isnt the worst thing to have. plus spellswords deserve more good options, now bladesinger doesnt have to feel like a wizard who can do a backflip.

    For Reactions, I would really like for them to add a specific exception to the spell slot rule. Counterspell is a great example, but another really good one is Shield: If you provoke an attack of opportunity, then cast Shield to protect yourself, have you now burned your one spell slot per turn? Similar for Hellish Rebuke, Silvery Barbs, Feather Fall, etc. I think they need to clarify whether a spell cast as a Reaction counts as being "on the turn" in which it was cast in the first place, or if Reactions are intended to exist outside the concept of a "turn." And obviously I would prefer that they make it NOT count as being on the turn, but if the RAI was that it is on the turn, I would like them to say so explicitly.
    I checked on dndbeyond, and was surprised to see that there are only SEVEN spells (not counting the Legacy tag) when you filter to Reactions: Absorb Elements (taking elemental damage), Counterspell (someone casts a spell), Feather Fall (when falling), Gift of Gab (when you talk), Hellish Rebuke (taking damage), Silvery Barbs (a create succeeds a roll), Soul Cage (a creature dies). All of these have very valid reasons to cast in the course of your own turn including when you provoke an attack of opportunity, jump off a cliff, encounter an environmental hazard, kill a creature, or talk.
    Very strangely the new Shield doesn't get listed on Beyond when you filter by reaction. It exists, and is a Reaction still, but the filters don't work for some reason. So that should be eight reaction spells at least, but there could be something else missing I guess.

    • @duelist301
      @duelist301 หลายเดือนก่อน

It will also feel really good on a druid while wildshaped. Though wild shapes and bladesingers are the only wizards and druids with more than 1 attack, and they usually only get 2. Other wizards and druids don't want to be in range for the spell and only get one attack.
      Where it falls apart is magical secrets or multiclassing. Which I think falls under the session zero don't play coffeelocks and infinite clones and peasant rail guns and other things that break the game type builds or they will be limited or nerfed to be more in line with comparible leveled spells and features. I think taking it away from especially druids, would suck and EotC will likely nerf it into the ground. 7 levels is not a likely "dip" unless you are building to get this spell. Though it is broken on a swords bard duel wielding, and I think that is a you can take any spell but that one or will only be allowed to proc the damage twice per turn.

    So upgrading existing campaign characters issues and weird behavior I ran into:
    First, I had to clear cache to get the 2024 stuff beyond the free rules stuff to appear at all.
    Chromatic Orb (old or new) was not visible as a spell for my wizard to pick up.
    Create and Destroy water was not visible for the moon druid.
    Paladin spell list did not appear in his spell list. Also, he has one fewer spell he can prepare.
    Phantom rogue did not show up as a subclass option.
    Devouring blade did not show up in my invocation list for a warlock.
    That is the list so far that I have run into, I assume they are working round the clock to hammer out those bugs, but I would think some of that should have been caught by QA.

    We’re watching in real time as WotC sunsets physical book production. They’re doing it slowly, but because they’re already updating digital versions, the physical versions that aren’t even widely available are already out of date. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they slow the release dates of the Monster Manual and DMG, or just rethink releasing them physically entirely. Imagine all the DMs who’ll have to subscribe to DnD Beyond if there AREN’T any physical books! It’s awful.

    The functionality of The Champion Fighter - the most basic class in the entire game - not having an expanded Crit Range is WILD! I think IIRC you can edit Crit Range on the Roll 20's 5E character sheet, as it's just a variable you can edit - for DDB to suggest its simply too complex feels like gas lighting. It might be issue 999 out of 1 billion right now (like, seriously, did they test this at all?), but to suggests it's not technically possible is bonkers.

It more reflects that defiling isn't a class, it's a choice one makes to get around restrictions on power. in a setting where magic is rare, taboo and casters are hunted. 2e wiz could have a single spell slot to start and not infinite cast cantrips. So a 5e wiz with fewer slots and still with cantrips they can spam is still way more casty than 2e. But it works well enough. With templars being Warlocks with monarch patrons, and psi being sorc using dmg mana point optional rules. it converts fairly easily.

Even before WotC bought it, I never felt like D&D Beyond was made to be a robust VTT. Hell, you need/needed browser add-ons to integrate with other VTTs. The original team did what they could but D&D Beyond always felt first and foremost like a news site and character maker for the game. I think Project Sigil is way too ambitious when the site still has so many quality of life and base functionality features it could fix/add before even worrying about trying to represent them all in a 3D space.
    And they're never going to be able to compete with other VTTs who have the benefit of only being a VTT whose resources are all aimed at being a good VTT.

    On your Counterspell example, you wouldn't have been able to cast Counterspell in 2014 either with that example because of the Bonus Action rules, since casting any Bonus Action spell, spell slot or not, already prevented you from casting Reaction spells on the same turn. I also don't mind not being able to Counterspell another Counterspell to your own spell, because that interaction always felt a bit ridiculous to me. Not that ridiculousness is inherently a bad thing, but I think the game will be healthier without Wizard battles devolving into MTG blue deck gameplay.

As a wizard player, "oh great I get to spend more of my only resource on a beneficial option that can be instantly lost while I will do much better with a control option." If people want to destroy your game they will figure out how, I don't want to destroy games, I want to explore my dms world, and will criticize infallacies in their world building, not to be rude, but because some things ruin suspension of disbelief. There is no reason to give the players an accurate map, also place more difficult terrain, combat is messy, mud slows you down. Get creative. Yes I can be a hassle, but I want to remind all players of their class features that they are forgetting, though maybe I should map possible reactions, actions, and bonus actions, so it is easier to play the game.

This stuff does not even bother me in the least I think the fact that they got this done using the 2014 and 2024 rules for the most part in tact in as little time as they have, I give the D&D Beyond team super huge props and those people deserve a big. Raise/bonus this year for sure, and they have my personal thanks for doing everything that they have done with us.
