- Hello and welcome back to another episode of Train Sim Classic!
We're back on the South Wales Coastal Modern route today where we're driving on the newly electrified section of line. Unfortunately due to the fact the electrification isn't yet finished, we're having to drive the section through to Bristol Parkway on diesel mode.
We're travelling from Cardiff to Bristol Parkway, calling at Newport en route. It's quite a simplistic route compared to the undulating nature of track between Swansea and Cardiff. There's quite a bit of quick running however being quite straight and wide it appears we're going quite slowly.

I know it's daft but genuinely my anxiety goes through the roof when there's a new speed limit or a known signal coming and you cut away to the map or an outside view in these sorts of videos. Same with going to passenger views on Omsi.
Haha I shall try and refrain from checking the map when I should be looking out the window 😄 it’s always a white knuckle ride when I’m driving haha
Just before the pandemic, GWR introduced a fast service from TM to Paddington, calling at Parkway only. An hour rather than 90 minutes, using the reworked Dr Days Junction and doubling of the track at … Filton Bank? Stopped during the pandemic and not returned yet.
Hi joe a little bit of history i have about the Great western railway. a very long time ago in the past i went on a train trip from london paddington to cardiff on what was First GREAT WESTERN on a HST.

The route what passes through STJ is the one what calls at Caldicot, Chepstow, Lydney, Gloucester and Cheltenham Spa that's what normal TFW trains do.
there are no longer Brighton services unfortunately

The Severn beach line doesn’t come out at parkway for passenger services, it’s freight only that single line down to Hallam Marsh Jct which the accesses the single line to Avonmouth, Severn Beach is a terminus station at the end of the line.
Half hourly service from Bristol TM to Avonmouth and hourly to Severn Beach. Nice little line. Have worked Class 150s, 153s 158s, 165s and 166s down there in my time 👍😎
Ahhhh right that makes sense, so the only passenger services for Severn beach come from Temple Meads! Thanks for the information Jay 😄
@@JoeDobsongaming yeah they come up from Bristol TM and then go left at Narroways Jct. before the December 2022 timetable change they were only around four to five trains per hour to Parkway from Bristol TM, effectively splitting the city in two. The single line in your video has a few freight working, cement to Lancashire, the bin train to Bedford and other aggregate and container traffic.
There are plans to run passenger services down that stretch of line however it’s mainly in the planning stage.

great Episode Joe !! Used to Work For British rail in The Bristol Area But now live in West Yorkshire Halifax and Calderdale Area !! Brings back Memories at working in Cardiff and Bristol !! you say the driving in between Cardiff and Newport the four Tracks out of Cardiff are mainline and Relief Lines either Side Plus Sidings to LLanwern Steelworks ! you have the lines from the Welsh coalfields of Meryth Tydfil before the Newport Tunnels and just after Newport Station Line to the left goes to Cwmbran and Hereford !! there is Trains from Swansea to London Paddington running through Bristol Parkway almost in a Striaght Line to Swindon travelling through Chipping Sodbury Tunnels ! yes even more Tunnels if i remember correctly one of them is over two miles long and a short one ata about 3/4 of a mile prone to flooding though !! The line is Quicker than the line through Bath Spa and Chippenham ! Definitely not a Flat area in the West Country ! if you go to Bristol Temple Meads its a Climb down From Bristol Parkway for about 6 miles ! Have been lucky to have Driven various trains up there from 150s to HSts and the odd Frieght trains 56s to Class 59 The orginal American Engines based at Merehead Quarry back in the day

the way up to chepstow is on the cheltenham spa to maesteg and back and some times go up onto ebbw vale and only up to glouchester

2:09 You reckon that line crossing above you is the cross country lines that go up north?
That's the Valley lines, specifically the link between Cardiff Central and Cardiff Queens' Street.
Most TfW services branch off just after Newport (16:18) through Cwmbran and the Marches line.
The remaining TfW and XC services branch off at Severn Tunnel Junction (23:50) towards Cheltenham.

Fantastic video joe I like these little episodes I love this route I never used to enjoy it but now I do it looks fantastic and runs much better i also got temp dump before now I don’t 😁
