- This is a review of the D2 QSP Penguin after 6 months of hard use. I also disassemble and clean it and then put a new edge on it.

Surprising the minimal amount of rust on the liner with the humidity. Good to see QSP liners holding up better than other budget knives.
Of all the D2 knives I own none have been better then what QSP does. Came razor sharp and won’t corrode.
I seriously was impressed how sharp and well made this thing came for $35 in black micarta. I did put tuf glide in the pivot and loosen pivot a bit to get it perfect but other than that.. solid medium-duty knife you can work with. Looks pretty but it performs fantastic. Civivi level quality but slightly more bang for buck I’d say.
Cardboard has been my strop material of choice for years now. Any type works. But i prefer the sketchbooks from dollar tree. The 8"-11" glued spine types. Its basically super fine grit sandpaper.
Do you put anything on it first? Like a compound or something? Or just plain cardboard? Thanks.
@@peteglanton9259 just straight cardboard
@@jspr_edc Ok thanks 👍
First… I’ve been using the rust eraser by KPL. I’m super pleased with the results. Give it a try🤙🏽
I put like 4 drops of tuf-glide on the Penguin blade day one and have never got a spec of rust. And I waste carried it during workouts for like six months. The D2 QSP does is a peg or two higher quality then your standard Chinese D2.
Great knives. I would absolutely put KPL or tuf-glide in the pivot washers and blade right away. Makes everything last longer, not corrode, and open and close like a $250 knife.
You don’t even have to take the knife apart. I avoid that unless absolutely necessary.
Great coaching skills! Thanks for the info! Good talk.
Nice. I really need to grab me some of those doo-dads
They come in very handy.
The ads on your channel are all for Pizza. I like that
It's such a epic knife for the money!
I paid $175 for a zdp189 Endura and it came half as sharp as my $28 Penguin. And that Penguin held that edge for a year before I have to my cousin.
Nice video, probably going to take mine apart now 👍
Great video Jamie! Thanks for the sharpening instructions. I need to get me one of those. Haven't sharpen a knife yet.
Its not that hard to do Aidy. Get that Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener in the description of my videos and then also get the set of 3 plates for it and you will be putting hair splitting edges on your knives in no time. It makes it very easy to free hand sharpen a knife. I think you will enjoy doing it also. It is relaxing (almost meditative) while doing it and fulfilling when you get that really sharp edge
should i buy one of these, i really like the carbon one?
Love that knife. Is the handle grippy? It looks quite textured.
Yea it is pretty grippy for micarta.
@@bladesandedc ok cool. I prefer it grippier. Thanks for reply.
i'm going to order the red micarta D2 , i like what i see , what can go wrong for $35.
Best $35 you will spend on a knife. The penguin is fantastic!
Buy two! The price keeps going up like 10% a year on blades. Penguin is punching at the $100 price point so buy as many as you can while they $30
Hi sir, I'm fairly new to the knife hobby got my 1st knife couple month ago, penguin it was cf handle, I don't use it at all, just playing with it every now and then, how often do you think I would need to use a rust protective solution, also, I've read about the KUROBARA 100% Pure Tsubaki Japanese Knife Maintenance Camellia Oil, do you think its gonna be a good choice or I'm being dumb 😂, thanks a lot for sharing this I'm gonna need to practice taking it apart soon
If you oil it once every couple months you should be fine but check it once a month to see if you see anything on the blade. Any type of knife oil should work great.
The 3 in 1 oil is the best quality for your money

China d2 is garbage but I'm glad you don't use massive lube like other TH-cam influencers who don't know any better.
I didn't feel like this was a review. At all. I was expecting more from a review.
Check out SpartanJohns channel. He did an actual review on this knife for comparison.
